Carl E. Leatherwood, Jr. 1941 - 2020
Leatherwood, longtime Terlingua author, resident and newspaperman, died on April 17 at Rosedale Adult House in El Paso. He was 78. Carl authored five books: Why Terlingua: Adventure on the Edge of Texas; Big Bend People: Terlingua Edition; Big Bend People, Terlingua, A Desert Oasis; Journey to the Edge of Texas: A Memoir of Love, Travel, Natural Beauty, Writing, and One Man’s Battle With Bipolar Disorder;and, Codette, Joey and Friends.
Carl was an only child, raised in Beaumont, Texas. He graduated from South Park High School and attended the University of North Texas at Denton where he majored in journalism. After graduating from North Texas, he began his newspaper career in Lubbock, and later went to work for the Houston Post. He loved to travel and he had a tremendous appreciation for nature and the outdoors as he fell in love with the heart and soul of Terlingua and the Big Bend area of far West Texas. His books portrayed the beauty of his beloved desert town.
Carl’s remains will be interred in Lampasas, next to his parents, Carl Emmett Leatherwood, Sr. and Gladys Maxine Leatherwood. No funeral services will be held. As you gaze into the skies of the Big Bend, you will see Carl gazing down and smiling.

As of right now, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Big Bend area. As health officials have said since March, testing across West Texas has been severely limited, and Texas as a whole has one of the worst rates for testing per capita in the country. But while there aren’t confirmed cases, local health officials have identified presumptive cases in the tri-county area. These presumptive diagnoses are given to individuals who likely have the coronavirus but are exhibiting milder symptoms and don’t meet the local threshold for testing. “We don’t have any confirmed cases, no test from any resident in the Big Bend region has been positive, which is great,” said Dr. Katie Ray, a physician with Preventative Care Health Services. “However, we do presume that some people that have presented with mild, COVID-like symptoms do have the virus.”

The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte. The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem. Big Bend Mask Makers of the Big Bend. Thanks to Wendy for sharing it on Facebook. You can also visit the Big Bend Mask Makers group on Facebook. The illustration shows the importance of protection for everyone. Big Bend Mask Makers are still hard at work churning out masks for the hospital and other people who need them, but we could use some more help. Many thanks to those who have pitched in so far, using their own fabric or taking fabric or kits from the bin at Big Bend High School, who have taken or sent finished masks, their own or from the other bin at the school, where they need to go. If you want to help and have questions, please call Wendy at 371-2972, Zoey at 371-2172, or me, Sarah, at 371-2202. If you don't have questions, just go for it, and be sure that you and your family all have masks yourselves, and use them.
Boquillas
"We are overwhelmed by the generosity of donors who support Boquillas in this unfortunate crisis. In 48 hours, we have raised over $5000. We will be working closely with the officials of Ocampo Municipality, under whose jurisdiction Boquillas falls. Fortunately, the Municipal (county) government just distributed food packages to 1200 families in the region, including Boquillas. Our first action will be to send a vehicle to Muzquiz, provided by Lilia Falcon, and purchase a large quantities of basic supplies such as flour, beans, rice, cooking oil, coffee, sugar, along with disinfectant supplies. Phase one is to provide for the daily dietary and sanitary needs of Boquillas and nearby villages. We are soliciting input from our friends in Boquillas to make sure major needs are covered, including prescription medicines as well as OTC.
We have no idea when the National Park will open or the crossing to Boquillas. The closure of the US/Canada border has been extended for another 30 days, and presumably it will be at least that long before Boquillas can open again. The Boquillas Covid Response will continue to solicit funds to cover humanitarian assistance to Boquillas for the duration of the crisis, and beyond as the town gears back up to safely receive visitors, whenever that may be.

Big Bend Ranch State Park Set To Reopen To The Public Thursday April 23rd
The Brewster County Tourism Council and Visit Big Bend have received notice from Big Bend Ranch State Park that Governor Greg Abbot has directed the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department as well as the Texas Historical Commission to reopen all State Parks and State Historic Sites effective Monday, April 20th. This DOES NOT include the 300,000+ acre Big Bend Ranch State Park located partially in Brewster County which will not open its gates to the public until Thursday April 23rd, 2020 to day visitation only. In addition, only the front country areas at Big Bend Ranch State Park along FM-170 will be opening. The East and West Contrabando trailheads will be open as will river put ins; however, the interior of the park will remain closed.
Specific regulations that have been put in place by Texas Parks and Wildlife for the public to visit include…Requiring visitors to wear face coverings; Maintain a six-foot distance from individuals outside of their party and Prohibiting groups larger than five
Big Bend National Park remains CLOSED to the public including a ban on through traffic through the park. In addition, Brewster county has implemented a ‘stay at home’ order until April 30th. Officials have also ordered all lodging, including hotels, motels, short term rentals, RV Parks and campgrounds closed until April 30th. Bars are closed until further notice and restaurants are allowed delivery and to-go options only. All of which are subject to extensions.

The Contrabando trail system at Big Bend Ranch State Park will be open beginning Thursday, April 23. The East and West Contrabando Trailheads are accessed from FM 170. No other parts of the park including visitor centers are open. Visitors must purchase their day use permits online and are expected to adhere to TPWD’s COVID-19 guidelines.
