“The Ballad of Esequiel Hernández”

In 1997, no one in the small town of Redford, Texas (pop. 100) knew that U.S. Marine teams, fully camouflaged and armed with M16 rifles, had been secretly deployed to their section of the border. No one knew that their town had been designated a major drug corridor, and that a team of four Marines had taken up a position near the local river crossing to watch for smugglers. Farmers like the Hernández family, who lived by the river, went on working their fields and tending to their livestock. On the evening of May 20, 18 year-old Esequiel Hernández Jr. left the house to graze his family’s goats, taking with him as usual a .22 rifle to keep away wild dogs. It was the last evening of his life.
Narrated by Tommy Lee Jones, The Ballad of Esequiel Hernández features a full array of remarkably candid accounts from three of the four Marines on the fatal mission; Esequiel’s family, friends and teachers; Marine Corps investigators; FBI and defense attorneys. The film also makes use of military investigative video and audio recordings of radio communication between the Marine team and their commanders before Hernández was shot.

Frona started her journey in the northeastern United States...Baltimore, Md. to be exact. She was drawing, painting and creating since she could hold a pencil and paintbrush. She studied at University of Md. and Loyola College and got degrees in art and teaching. After traveling to fuel her inspiration and see other parts of the world, she married in London. Moving back to the states, they settled in Texas and she continued her education studying in Paris through International Studies Abroad...painting and art history, Florence, Italy at the Academia D'Arte...techniques of the great masters, Ireland at various workshops and Edinburgh at the Academy of Realist Art. Frona, her husband and cats moved to Florida for 7 years where she was fortunate to live near the Southern Atelier in Sarasota. She took classes there and also studied privately. Now back in Texas...for good!!...they have settled in Terlingua where she is letting all she has learned and been exposed to culminate and emerge with her own unique interpretation that is truly Frona. "I am happy to call Terlingua my home. There is a strong creative energy that draws and keeps so many artists here. I am deeply inspired and love being surrounded by these magical mountains and creative community. I look forward to many happy and rewarding years as a productive artist."

Terlingua American Legion Loss. It is with a heavy heart I report the passing Friday of our Terlingua American Legion Post Commander D. Wayne Powell, (U.S. Navy). Wayne was release today from the hospital after almost 3 weeks with heart issues. He and his wife had checked into a hotel for the evening when he started gasping for air and suffered heart attack and passed away.
Please keep Wayne and his family in your thoughts and prayers!!
One of our very dear friends, Judy Boe Towery, has experienced some medical issues in the last few weeks. Her friends are sponsoring events to help with medical expenses. If you feel the need to explore go by foot. Remember Big Bend National Park is your park. Please take care of our public lands for future generations.
Trespass livestock continues to be a problem on Terlingua Ranch, especially in the Big Bend Valley east of 118. As many as 21, with 3 obviously pregnant, cows have been encountered in the Red Bluff and Black Top areas. These cattle have been trampling, and eating, native vegetation and using water resources better meant for native wildlife.
They're leaving behind their dung which is beneficial in smaller amounts but not the amounts recently cleared up near Red Bluff. Per one property owner, the smell and large amounts of flies was overwhelming. It's not their livestock; it shouldn't be their problem. If we're truly interested in the reclamation of these lands, and the return of the Desert Bighorn (and Elk), this problem must be addressed and brought to an end. For those wondering. Brewster County is not an "open range" County. The responsibility lies with the livestock owner(s) to properly manage their livestock.
Brewster County Sheriff's Office is investigating this problem, and has committed to taking the appropriate action(s) upon discovery. If you have information please call them, or send it via their Facebook PM page.

Earthquake activity is increasing in West Texas, according to a recent study by University researchers.
The research team used an earthquake tracking system made up of 10 seismographs, which record earthquake data, and found a dramatic increase in earthquakes primarily in West Texas, according to a study published Nov. 4 in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth.
The activity in West Texas jumped from 19 earthquakes in 2009 to 1,600 in 2017, according to the study. Heather DeShon, study co-author and associate professor at Southern Methodist University, said her team conducted the research to find out why the number of earthquakes has increased.
“West Texas now has the highest seismicity rates in the state,” DeShon said.
Peter Hennings, study co-author and research scientist at the UT Bureau of Economic Geology, said researchers tracked the patterns of earthquakes using the TXAR seismic station, which is also used to detect nuclear explosions, near Lajitas, Texas, just outside Big Bend National Park.
“Dr. Cliff Frohlich and his colleague Chris Hayward … use digital records going back to the year 2000 to find out if (the TXAR) recorded earthquakes in West Texas and, if so, used a consistent approach every year from 2000 all the way through 2017 to see how the earthquake rate has changed,” Hennings said.
Oil and gas production has also increased in West Texas, according to the UT press release regarding the study. Hennings said while this was not directly shown to cause earthquakes, the two increases correlate.
“What you would want to find is that one thing related specifically to the earthquakes, both in space and in time, and the researchers were unable to find a dominant signal,” Hennings said. “The paper concludes that the change in the rate of earthquakes per year generally correlates with the increase in overall petroleum activity in the same area.”
Co-author and SMU scientist Chris Hayward said the researchers found thousands of small earthquakes coming from the direction of the Permian Basin, where there’s a lot of new petroleum development. He said if the two factors are not related, there must be an alternative explanation as to why the earthquakes suddenly increased.
Hennings said even though the earthquakes in Texas have increased, none of them pose a threat as they have caused no significant damage or injury.
