Third Annual Terlingua Talent Show

Setting a Stone for Fromholz

We received word from Darcie Jane Fromholz, eldest of musician, boatman, sometimes Ghost Town resident, rascal, troubadour, and all around good guy, Steve Fromholz. 

She, along with her sister, Felicity Rose, and their mama, Janey Lake, will be gathering with friends and family to lay a stone for Fromholz on Saturday, November 9th in the Terlingua Cemetery, probably around 4 pm. There will be a second-line to follow, some light libations and such as well.

Additionally, performing at the Starlight that night will be Dan McCrimmon, dad’s partner in Frummox, as well as Craig Hillis of the Lost Austin band, as well as others TBA. More information will be provided as the date nears, so mark your calendar.

The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte. The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

All Energies Tip of the Week 

Proper battery watering will help your bank last longer and produce less mess. Most of the batteries in the Big Bend are the flooded lead acid type, which means they require maintenance. These batteries contain Sulfuric Acid, often referred to as electrolyte which is about 30% acid and 70% water. The water in the electrolyte is lost over time and needs to be replenished. Check the electrolyte approximately every 30 days. Batteries will consume more water in warmer months and older batteries need the electrolyte checked more often. ALWAYS wear safety glasses and gloves when adding distilled water! NEVER have an open flame, spark, or lit cigarette around your batteries. Use a flashlight with a narrow beam to look at the liquid level in the cell. The electrolyte level in the battery needs to be above the plates and below the recessed well. Don’t worry about spilling distilled water on top of the batteries, since pure water is a poor electrical conductor. Bring the electrolyte level to about one-quarter inch below the bottom of the cell well, or about 1.25” below the top of the battery, do not overfill. To the person driving an HVAC van with a 512 phone number on the back that pulled out of BJ's in front of me, into the oncoming traffic lane and proceeded to go 4o mph on 17o (in the correct lane at least) at 1o:45pm Thursday 

And to the person who rolled through the stop sign on the west entrance/exit of the Ghost Town last night around 1o:3o and made me literally have to slam on my brakes while repeatedly honking because apparently my headlights coming at them at 6o mph was not enough to make them rethink their maneuvers & I was mere feet from T-boning them:

NOT COOL!

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION! 

Season is picking up and there are only going to be more vehicles and hazards to look out for... please don't drive drunk!!! And at the very least, on these two lane highways we ALL HAVE TO SHARE, if you're gonna drive erratically, just WAIT for the vehicle coming straight at you who has the RIGHT OF WAY pass... then you aren't risking the lives of everyone involved in your jackassery.

TFEMS hires a new Chief The Terlingua Fire & EMS Board of Directors officially welcomes and introduces Marcus Smith as our new Chief of Fire & EMS for our TFEMS organization. Our current Chief, Greg Henington, who has established and built up the TFEMS organization over the past 15 years, will be leaving the position and handing over the reins to Marcus Smith. Marcus has had a long and successful career in Fire and EMS services, starting with a 28 year career with City of Lancaster, TX as a Captain and Training Officer. During the last 8 years of this period, as Fire Chief he also assisted the City of Wilmer, TX with the transition of their volunteer Fire and EMS Department to a career (paid) department, as well as obtaining grants for new fire apparatus, ambulance, wild land firefighting vehicle and bunker gear.

What’s the cost per kwh for off grid solar, over its lifetime?

Lead Acid batteries purchased in 2019 will cost about 12 cents per KWh, for the storage you get over a typical 7 year lifetime. Lithium batteries have the potential to lower storage costs, but I am still waiting to see more real world testing. Solar Panels Purchased in 2019 will produce energy for about 1 cent per Kwh over their 20+ year lifetime!  These cost estimates leave out other components such as electronics, racking, ect. In most cases batteries are the greatest expense in off grid solar and making your solar system utilize the smallest battery bank possible will save you money. One way of getting a smaller battery bank, is storing your cooling or heating, in tons of insulated mass for use at night. The Big Bend Citizens' Alliance will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, October 10th at the South County Emergency Response Center. Meet and greet at 5:30 PM, and our meeting will begin at 6PM. We are a public charity supporting the Terlingua Community Garden, Canyon View Community Park, Terlingua Recycles, Voices from Both Sides, Terlingua Visual Arts, Ghost Town Charities, Terlingua Dark Sky Alliance, and Terlingua Cares. We'll be considering changes to the BBCA's governing documents (Constitution, Bylaws, Policies & Procedures) at this meeting. All are welcome to attend this public meeting. October Community Taize Service at St. James, Alpine

Taize, an ecumenical, inter-spiritual service of reconciliation will be held at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, October 16, at St. James Episcopal Church located at 510 N. 6th St at Ave A in Alpine.

Taize worship consists of meditative singing and periods of silence in order to reach a contemplative state. This month’s universal reconciliation service will focus on readings and chants based on the theme of Divine Silence. For more information, contact, pscook.herenow@gmail.com

THIS WEEK AT LA KIVA. WEDNESDAY IS NOW "WILD ASS WEDNESDAY" - Hosted by Tim Relleva.  Happy Hour from 5 o'clock to 7 o'clock, and food specials that night.  This week it's Gringo Chalupas with Rice and Beans for $8.  Come and listen to his music, come and sing, stand-up comedy if you want to make people laugh, come and be a Star!

Fridays we have Rock 'n Roll with Tim Relleva from 5 o'clock to 8 o'clock, then Clayton with Karaoke.

THE BIG BEND CITIZENS' ALLIANCE will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, October 10th (location TBD). Meet and greet at 5:30 PM, and our meeting will begin at 6PM. We are a public charity supporting the Terlingua Community Garden, Canyon View Community Park, Terlingua Recycles, Voices from Both Sides, Terlingua Visual Arts, Ghost Town Charities, Terlingua Dark Sky Alliance, and Terlingua Cares. We'll be considering changes to the BBCA's governing documents (Constitution, Bylaws, Policies & Procedures) at this meeting. All are welcome to attend this public meeting. ALL ENERGIES TIP OF THE WEEK: Know what uses the most energy in your home. Usually the number one energy-user is Heating and Cooling, which consumes on average between 28 and 60 kWh each day. Electric water heating is second, using an average of 13.5 kWh per day.  Refrigeration is third, and Lighting is often fourth, but recently high efficiency LED lighting has started pushing that number down. Fifth is Computers, including laptops and desktops. Your highest instantaneous power use is an electric stove, second is water heater, third is water pump, fourth is microwave oven! FRIENDS OF BLACK GEORGE.  Save the date on 11/11.  After my status update on George I got so many responses from friends and well-wishers that George has decided to come see us in Big Bend. I will be hosting a potluck for him on 11/11 in the late afternoon out here at the end of the road.  If you know George or have heard of him or think you might want to meet one of the last of the old USGS Boatmen that helped map the rivers of the west.  Come on out.  There are 75 years of high adventure between this photo of young tail gunner George Simmons and honorary Rio Ranger Black George. Some of you need to be here, and you know who you are.

NOTES FROM THE CACTUS PATCH, a semi-weekly contribution from Cactus Jane. // “Read the road like a book” // It’s that time of year.  Time to watch traffic roll in after an intimate season.  River guides are trickling in, visitors appear in waves, loco locals hope for a flood stage of activity, and perhaps the Rio will rise for the occasion.  There’s people traffic in the Big B, and the critters would like to survive it.  Tarantulas are on the move, snakes are on the road, and turtles have donned their best hardpan travel gear.  It’s just another day in paradise for these permanent residents.  Out on the road, red racers, like ribbons, flash a warning code “I WILL WIN THIS RACE” as they ripple across pavement faster than a mustang.  Rattlesnakes, confident in their stubborn power, contract to a coil and perch between the mustard and mayo, where they wait for automobiles to screech to a halt.  It’s a game of chicken they are used to winning on their turf, but things play out differently on the asphalt.  Locals know the roads and are adept at scanning for shadowy bumps while maintaining speed and safety.  Here’s a helpful hint: the road is long and smooth.  Bumpy shadows belong to creepers and crawlers.  Observe their signs thoughtfully; scan for them well in advance, and you will have achieved loco local desert oneness!

STATEWIDE ELECTION 

Attention Brewster County voters:

There is a state-wide election on November 5, 2019 to vote on 10 constitutional amendments, including one on a state personal income tax.  Information is available at League of Women Voters of Texas https://my.lwv.org/texas/election-information. Early voting will be at the Judge Val Clark Beard complex in Alpine, October 21-25, and October 28- November 1, 8:00 am-5:00 pm.  Voting on Election Day, November 5, for Precincts 5, 6, and 7 will be at the Red Pattillo Community Center from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

If you are eligible to vote by mail, you can pick up an application at the Elections Office in the front of the Brewster County Courthouse, call the County Elections office at 837-6230 to request an application, or print out Form #5-15 from the Texas Secretary of State website: https://webservices.sos.state.tx.us/forms/5-15f.pdf.
