Then, on July 27, Gina Chavez and her band will be at The Starlight. If you're not yet familiar with Gina's music. Check her out online - several great programs with NPR and others.

Ceil Drucker's Injury
One of our own, Ceil Drucker, was badly injured when a heavy limb fell 25’ and crushed her under it. She received multiple spine and rib fractures, suffered a head injury and tore all four ligaments in her left knee. She was in ICU for 3 days and is looking at a lengthy hospital stay. She has had a spinal fusion T10-L2 and will need to have a total knee reconstruction. Bob is with her at the hospital so income has ground to a halt. Friends have created a GoFundMe account so their community can help as the Terlingua community always does. We are a public charity supporting the Terlingua Community Garden, Kids Klub, Terlingua Recycles, Voices from Both Sides, Terlingua Visual Arts, Ghost Town Charities, Terlingua Dark Sky Alliance, and TerlinguaCares. MAMMOS ON THE MOVE, a mobile mammogram screening, will be in Terlingua July 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the corner of Hwy 118 and FM 170.  See attached flyers.

Recycle News & Updates
The recycle trailer has been moved to a new location on the school road and is behind the first ballparks. The sign is on the side of the road.
Right now we are open on Saturday from 9 until noon. We are only open when there is a volunteer on site to sort the material. We cannot accept any kind of trash or non-recyclable materials any longer. This is mandated by the National Park where we take the trailer to unload. 
As we get more volunteers and the weather cools down a bit we will be open more hours. Suggestions on times to be open are welcome.
The only items we can now accept are:
Cardboard. No paper items such as books, magazines, etc.  Tin cans. Must be clean and rinsed.
Aluminum cans. No foil, etc.
Plastic. Only #1 and #2. Must be clean. No caps. The number is on the bottom of the item.

Fatality in Big Bend National Park
“We are deeply saddened by this loss and would like to extend our sincere condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Merrill,” said Superintendent Bob Krumenaker. “The environment of Big Bend in the summer is, sadly, unforgiving. We urge all hikers to be sure they are prepared for the summer desert conditions so they are able to return home and safely visit Big Bend again. I would also like to extend my thanks to the hard work of the search and rescue team under these extreme conditions, as well as to our Border Patrol partners for their assistance.”
The park would like to remind visitors that hiking in the desert in the summer can be dangerous. We would like to urge caution due to extreme heat conditions. We recommend hiking only in the very early morning hours, and being off all trails by the time temperatures reach 95 degrees, which is usually between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. this time of year.

SERVICE DOGS FOR DISABLED VETS
We have an opportunity to help our disabled veterans that need service dogs. There is a lady that actually has approximately fifty of these dogs, and she has made a very generous offer to donate these dogs to physically disabled Texas veterans.  There is a  small charge for the lady to train the veterans to work with the dogs and vice versa.  Another lady who is over the Daughters of The American Revolution in our region called me and shared that they would pick up the cost of this training if we could help locate the veterans which are in need. With the Senator involved with the Veterans Affairs, I thought he might possibly share with me some contacts who might be able to locate these veterans.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance that either of you or the Senator might be able to help me with. I would regret not doing what I could to take advantage of this opportunity. The Kerens Veterans Memorial  Danny Combs dann2co@wildblue.net

He sleeps nicely on his dog bed and loves his job duties welcoming guests. He walks beautifully on a leash, always eats his supper, and with great food, air conditioning, and an audience cheering him on, you might find him playing fetch in the lobby! Mack gets along with other dogs and has a great lean. Mack is neutered, fully vaccinated and will be a fantastic companion. The world premiere of the documentary film Bravo y Grande will screen at the Rangra Theater in Alpine at 2 pm on June 22. Narrated by Texas troubadour Butch Hancock, the film documents a 2018 expedition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and the 40th anniversary of the designation of the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. Join a group of river guides, scientists, locals and NPS personnel as they travel 83 miles along the US/Mexico border through the Lower Canyons of the Rio Grande, one of the most remote sections of river in the US. The filmmaker Carl Crum and participants featured in the film will be in attendance for a Q&A, and a reception will follow at the Ritchey Wine Saloon and Beer Garden.

RECYCLING CHANGES -- We have the trailer set up at the new location behind the ballparks on the school road. Some volunteers have graciously offered to help. The recycle world has drastically changed the past year, especially here, far from the big recycle centers. We have made this move so we can keep the trailer locked except when someone is there to sort through items brought. We cannot continue as before when we received a lot of trash and items we could not recycle. We take everything to the recycle center in Panther Junction, and they notified us a few months ago that we had to start bringing nothing but clean and acceptable items. We will have volunteers to sort through what is brought and anything not acceptable will have to be taken back as we have no trash dumpster.

Aluminum cans, tin cans, #1 and #2 plastic and cardboard. No paper, books, etc. any longer as we have no outlet.

For now, we will be open on Saturday from 9AM to Noon or so when it gets too hot to stay out there. We will work on getting more open times as we work out the schedule.

Swimming Pools of Big Bend Region
The best way to enjoy Big Bend this summer is to plan your hikes in the morning or evening to avoid the mid-day heat. Additionally, consider booking a few nights at a place with a swimming pool. Terlingua Ranch Lodge offers budget friendly accommodations, which is perfect for families. The Lajitas Golf Resort in Lajitas & the Gage Hotel in Marathon offer various spa services, fun activities and large pools with plenty of comfortable seating around the deck. Make sure to bring sun hats, sunscreen and floats for the kids!

Hiking Recommendations
The Mesa de Anguila trail in Big Bend National Park often gets confused for Horseshoe Bend in Colorado, and rightfully so. We have spoken to several people about the misclassification of photos online. Big Bend is named for the curve that the Rio Grande river makes, and the Mesa de Anguila hike illustrates that perfectly. Being the least visited areas of the park we recommend hiking with pants, since the trail is not well worn. If you find yourself getting lost along the way, remember to stay right, which will get you to the scenic overlook. We strongly recommend against doing the full loop since it's a gruesome 14 miles, and instead suggest starting with the 3 miles (approx.) up and back route to the overlook. The hike is steep, and there are no water sources along the way. NPS recommends getting a detailed topographical map.
