***BOIL WATER NOTICE***

From Commissioner Sara Allen Colando:

For Study Butte Water Supply Corporation

1-12-2026

Due to a repair of a leak on the main 6” line resulting in loss of water and pressure to some members, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the Study Butte Water Supply Corporation, #0220035, to notify customers ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE SERVICE AREA BEGINNING WITH DESERT SPORTS AND THE OLD TERLINGUA STORE TO BEE MOUNTAIN AND TO THE END OF THE SERVICE AREA TOWARDS THE BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, to boil their water prior to consumption (e.g., washing hands/face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc.).  Children, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria, and all customers should follow these instructions.

To ensure destruction of a harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes.  The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source for drinking water or human consumption.

THE NIGHT SKY THIS MONTH

๐ŸŒ‘ 1/18 New Moon at 1:30 PM

๐ŸŒ“ 1/25 First Quarter
๐ŸŒ• 2/1 Full Snow Moon rise at 4:09 PM

January’s skies offer some of the most spectacular stellar cartography of all, with brilliant Orion, Taurus, Canis Major/Big Dipper, and others sparkling through much of the night. Fomalhaut, the lonely Autumn Star, disappears in the southwest near month’s end.

Orion Nebula: On 1/14 the Orion Nebula is in the southeast at nightfall, to the lower right of Orion's Belt. It looks like a big, faint star. Instead of a single star, though, it's a giant complex of gas and dust that has given birth to thousands of stars.
Quadrantids Meteor Shower: Peaked on 1/4 with 25 meteors an hour, tapering off toward the end of the month. Best seen facing north in predawn hours.
Spring Equinox: 3/20

Information from the Old Farmer’s Almanac, Stardate.org, and McDonald Observatory.

Protect our dark skies! Turn out the lights at night, use warm colored, downfacing or shielded lights.

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK CRITICAL WATER SHORTAGE
On December 23, 2025, the water pumps at Oak Spring failed completely.  These pumps supply water to the Chisos Basin developed area from Oak Spring, the only water source for the Chisos Basin.  The park immediately enacted Stage 2 water restrictions to conserve the water stored in the Chisos Basin water tanks.  The back-up water pump was previously out of the park for repair and is not available.  The park is urgently trying to expedite repair of the pumps, and there is no current timeline for when that repair will occur (but it is expected to take several weeks, at best).  For more information and to read the entire press release, visit https://www.nps.gov/bibe/learn/news.
