Terlingua Moon

Volume 37, Number 3

January 20, 2026 by Abejita Chiquitita

January 20 is: National Cheese Lover’s Day! National Coffee Break Day! Penguin Awareness Day! And Take a Walk Outdoors Day! At least 3 of these 4 are hard NOT to run across in Terlingua, so get out and celebrate!

Please Note:  With evil weather forecast for Friday through Monday there are more cancellations than we can share.  Please check before you go.

PAISANO POST FROM TERLINGUA SCHOOL

PUPPIES!!!!!! RESCUE UPDATES

This is a heartfelt adoption appeal from the Jackass Flats team (associated with The Little Burro Country Store). 3 dogs have been adopted already!  The remaining dogs are still needing a caring and loving family.

We are still urgently seeking donations for food and medical care to support the remaining dogs (of the ongoing rescues).

These dogs were rescued and received basic/medical care thanks to donations.

All are available for adoption now.

Mix of ages: Younger ones (under 1–2 years) and older ones (approx. 7–9 years).

2 are scheduled for spay and neuter. The others are scheduled in the near future. They need patient, loving homes to help them adjust and thrive.

For adoption inquiries: Message the JAF (Jackass Flats) page, The Little Burro page, or Pam Gordon directly.

If you can't adopt but want to help:

Donations are accepted at The Little Burro Store or via Jenn’s apps: Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, Chime, Apple Pay, Zelle.

Phone: 903-820-1614

No GoFundMe used.

Dog food isn’t needed for a few weeks, but the bills are piling up! Just vaccines, heartworm testing, and parasite protocols can run $200-400 per pooch.

Our team here are very busy running Jackass Flats and could use some shuttle volunteers .

Also the DOGS would love to have volunteers to come and help them go for a walk about and learn to be on leashes PLEASE !!! We have an indoor controlled environment to get acquainted  and start to help each DOG learn his way.

PLEASE come and see us at THE LITTLE BURRO COUNTRY STORE or call me PAM GORDON @ 765 252 8863 and we would love to get you on a schedule.

Sharing this post widely could make a huge difference—one share might connect a dog with their perfect family. If you're in or near Texas, we are willing to transport, consider reaching out. These pups deserve loving homes after what they've been through.

Wishing the remaining dogs quick adoptions and continued support for the team! 🐾🐶

The 2026 WORDOFF will take place at the Cinnabar Theater on Groundhog Day, that's the 2nd of February. Sign-up at 6 Words at 7

The WORDOFF is Terlingua's annual spoken word event. Prose, poetry and tall tales are all encouraged, original material only please. You have 5 minutes to share your work with a 5 minute cutoff that will be loosely applied by the MC's. We are proud to provide a safe space for folks to get up on stage and share your original works. Happy, sad, topical, universal, we want it all.

We will spend a little time at the beginning of the evening remembering our dear friend and original wordoffer, Tom Gaffaney.

You can write about anything you want, but if you need inspiration, this year the theme is OLD FRIENDS.

SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET

Come see us at the Saturday Community Market, open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items. You'll also be able to enjoy our fabulous local mobile library and portable free ‘porch’, even consult with Dr. Gigabyte if you have a computer problem.

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, sour dough bread, all natural lip balms and skin care products, all natural essential oil fragrances, beard oil and massage oils, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here.

Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.

We welcome new vendors. To make it easy for new vendors to try our market and to show our appreciation to our regular vendors, we waive set-up fees on the first Saturday of the month, offering free set-up on that day.

For more information, text or call 432.213.1863 or pop in at the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

Eco-Logic specializes in desert-adapted, low-water landscape design and land improvement built specifically for Big Bend conditions—harsh sun, wind, flash flooding, and fragile soils. We help property owners create resilient, beautiful, and functional land that protects long-term value, improves guest experience, and works with the desert instead of fighting it. Our schedule fills quickly due to seasonal constraints, so if you’ve been thinking about improving your land “someday,” this is the window to act. Book a consultation now and invest once—in solutions that last for decades. ecologiclandscape.com
