NIGHT SKY FRIENDLY LIGHTING RECOGNITION PROGRAM ‑‑ McDonald Observatory recognizes our neighbors that help protect our night sky by following recommended outdoor lighting practices. Thank you to the residents, businesses, and organizations who are Night Sky Friendly!
Night Sky Friendly outdoor lighting keeps light on the ground and out of the sky, helping to preserve the exceptional night skies Far West Texas is famous for. It’s also better for business: night sky friendly lighting designs improve visibility and safety, and can be more cost effective than traditional designs. Recipients of the Night-Sky Friendly recognition receive two 5" x 5" window stickers, an 11" x 17" poster to display, and will be recognized here and in local media where appropriate. For more information, visit McDonald Observatory Recognition Program.

SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET ‑‑ Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.
Local art, handcrafted textile goods, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms and skin care products, essential oil perfumes, leather goods, handcrafted, creative jewelry, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and up-cycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here.
We welcome new vendors. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com or pop in to the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling license. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).
Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

A DESERTED FAIRNESS
In Brewster’s sunlit, rugged land,
Where mesas rise and cacti stand,
The winds whisper tales of toil,
Yet justice falters on this soil.
The promise shines, a beacon clear,
That work and worth should persevere,
But shadows stretch where pride should reign,
And merit's voice calls out in vain.
Connections weave an unseen thread,
Binding dreams till hope has fled.
A name, a nod, a whispered word—
The strongest winds are never heard.
The hand that builds, the mind that dreams,
Are left to wade upstream through streams.
For in the halls where power dwells,
The echo of fair chance rebels.
Yet somewhere in this rugged place,
A seed of change begins its race.
The roots grow deep, the heart beats strong,
To right the balance tipped so wrong.
Oh, Brewster County, desert vast,
May justice find you, free at last.
And every soul, no matter small,
Rise by their merit, equal to all.
