Viva Terlingua Cares

is a two day music event taking place in February to support our local grassroots charity Terlingua Cares.

Friday 16th is open mic, Saturday 17th we have a fantastic lineup of musicians. All of this at Greg Hammer's Boathouse in the Terlingua Ghostown.

There will be a silent auction and raffle on Saturday the 17th. We have over $10,000 in prizes to raffle and auction off including hotel stays, a round of golf, river trips, backpacks, knives, gift certificates to numerous local places to eat, drills, mtb tires, battery jumper packs.... our community has been incredibly supportive of this event.

Today at the monthly meeting of the Study Butte Water Supply Company board of directors, the group discussed the health of the aquifer.
Static water levels were measured by the Operator at 840 feet below the ground.
According to Mr Garcia, that level hasn't changed more than a couple feet since he's been working for SBWSC.
The board would like to keep the public informed and let everyone know that the water levels are steady, which indicates that water supply and aquifer are healthy!  TLDR: we are not running out of water

TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE AND SECOND ANNUAL UGLY FEET CONTEST Saturday, March 2 @ 3:00 P.M. Come celebrate the 188th anniversary of Texas Independence from Mexico with the annual impromptu parade beginning and ending at the Ghost Town Porch celebrating the sacrifices of those who won our freedom that has been so easily forgotten by native Texans and unknown by the naturalized and visitors. The parade is scheduled to begin around 3:00 P.M. (but is notoriously late) at the Porch.  The route for the parade this year will include the entire Loop of Ghost Town Road, including FM 170. Gathering for the parade will be at any time necessary for the preparation of your "float" to make the 3:00 start. ALL FLOATS AND UGLY FEET WELCOME. The Ugly Feet contest will take place on the Ghosttown porch right after the parade and there will be music. Please try to attend with a float and enter your ugly feet into the contest, or just come as a spectator and spread the word. Please don't be shy about entering your UGLY FEET. Be proud of your ugly feet! Terlingua is notorious for our ugly feet. Don't let the tourists beat you because the entire planet is eligible to enter. More details to follow.

Celebration of Life for Steve Harper

Friday, March 1st 5:00 - 8:00

A US Forest Service retiree, Steve found Big Bend in the late 90s. Volunteering for a few seasons living in the park, he fell in love with Terlingua and the community. He and Judy, his wife, found some land and quickly became part of the community. He brought grandsons Jason and John (the twins) down to help him build the house and over the next 18 years he and Judy made it the sanctuary the family has come to love. He loved this community. He overcame a stroke in 2014 and continued to enjoy Terlingua until a fall in December 2019 made it impossible to live alone. Steve moved in with his daughter Jill in 2021. They returned together last winter/spring. Steve passed away last October after another stroke.

Friday, March 1st 5:00 - 8:00

Please join our family and friends at Steve and Judy's Gate 6 home to celebrate his life in Big Bend. Bring your memories, stories and maybe a dish to share.

The family will scatter his ashes before the gathering, friends are welcome.

If you need directions or have questions please contact Jill. Judy will join us in spirit from Santa Rosa, unfortunately she's unable to make the long trip.

Careful integration of design elements into the existing local landscape, including increasing native plants and turning stormwater runoff into an amenity while stopping erosion, can create inviting spaces that attract customers and promote a more vibrant streetscape. Ecological landscape design can not only restore and beautify our area in keeping with it's natural aesthetic but also improve its ecological resilience in numerous ways, benefitting local businesses and the community as a whole. GiveSendGo-Help Grady Suttles Become Deputy

Our country is changing, and with it our county. Brewster County is in need of deputies to keep our area safe and uphold the law. Grady Suttles recognizes that need, and notices that not many of our men are willing to take up that responsibility. In response, Grady is willing to fill that need with his prior experience in Military Law Enforcement and Private Security. To do so, Grady will have to go to L.E.A. (Law Enforcement Academy), to fulfill the TCOLE requirement before he becomes a Deputy of the Brewster County Sheriff's Dept. This academy is a six month long course and a $5,000 tuition, not including travel costs. Grady Suttles is committed to the protection of the people of Brewster County and the Constitution of the United States. His experience as an Army Military Police (MP), can serve the county well. Help Grady Suttles by donating to his educational fund, and help him become one of our own Brewster County Deputies.

New Website Posts

We are regularly updating our website and would like you to check out our recent posts if you have not already done so. New posts have been added on the HomeEventsNews & ViewsTake Action!, and Partners, Friends, & Resources pages. Other pages have also been updated. Some examples:

On the Home page, our February edition of Set the Record Straight: Truth Posts attempts to bring a few truths and facts and hopefully humor (in the form of posters) to current political debates, which often seem to emphasize slogans and baseless attacks. The posters are intended to be informative and at least sometimes entertaining. Politics Girl Podcasts offers a new TikTok entry, You’re Not a Patriot, a biting commentary on MAGA voters. A new sec􀆟on of the Home page, What’s New, focuses on The Lincoln Project and links to their recent video ads: God Made a Dictator and It’s a Cult, and They’re Gearing Up for a Holy WarOur Home page can be accessed here: https://www.jdcdp.org.

VOTE411 IS LIVE!

We are also highlighting the wealth of information on all aspects of voting available from our friends, The League of Women Voters of Texas. The links on the above VOTE411 IS LIVE! attachment can answer all your questions about voting in the 2024 Primary Election, and provide you with a nonpartisan voter guide prior to the start of early voting. Check this attachment out, and keep it handy as voting dates approach.

Water Outage and Boil Notice

On the evening of Tuesday 2/13/24 a massive leak formed on a main line next to South County Road. This leak drained the tanks at the plant by midnight causing the water loss in Terlingua. We’ve been working on it since 6:30am this morning and have evaluated the situation. The current plan is for the repair to be completed today, we don’t have a timeline for when the water will be completely restored at this time. The tank at Bee Mountain was not drained; Study Butte currently still has water and, in theory, will not loose water. However, there is the possibility that Study Butte will at some point run out as well. We will continue to post updates as we get them. Once water is restored there will have to be a boil notice for the entire service area. Big Bend Motor Inn is NOT on Study Butte Water Supply’s system and is not affected by this outage nor will they be effected by the boil notice. Please check www.StudyButteWater.com

for updates and/or contact the office manager at 432-371-2933 for information. The office is open until 3:00pm.
