Paisano Post from Terlingua CSD

From Ms. Baumann: Five middle school students completed all four months of the reading minutes challenge. They were Luna Barrett, Brooke Jenks, Asa Reed, Desiree Lujan, and Rylee Russell. The reward for this accomplishment was a movie of their choice and popcorn. Congratulations to these super dedicated readers!

From Ms. Crockett: The 4th grade art class finished out the year with a bean project. They have "bean" working hard this year.

From Ms. Willmon: BBHS Student Council held their final lunch meeting of the year on Wednesday, May 26, at La Posada. Ms. Willmon wants to thank them for their service and efforts to their school and community. Job Well Done!

From Ms. Reed: My submission, Go Code, is a recipient of the 2021 WeTeach_CS Mini-Grant Award in the amount of $1,000. Next school year, this funding will help in implementing easy access and stimulating hands-on coding opportunities via high school mentors to elementary and middle school students. As well as, enriching curriculum materials to supplement instruction toward increased success in UIL Computer Science competition. Six grants across the state were made possible through the Texas Advanced Computer Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

DARK SKIES NEWS

Today Brewster County updated its outdoor lighting ordinance to reflect changes in lighting technology (such as LEDs), remove contradictions in the language, and to help lay the groundwork for the region to be an IDA-certified Dark Sky Reserve. It will also make efforts to certify a Dark Sky Community in the Terlingua area much easier. Better lights aren't just good for dark skies and tourism; night-sky friendly lights also improve visibility and safety, use less energy, and are better for wildlife and the environment.

The super simplified version is:

  1. Shielding: lights should be fully shielded and aimed down, and not shining off property or into the sky.
  2. Color temperature: Avoid excessive white or blue lights, use soft white or amber (<2700K)
  3. Intensity: Lights should be an appropriate brightness level, not brighter than necessary
  4. Timing: Lights that aren't in use are encouraged to be turned off or put on a timer or motion detector.

Existing fixtures should be brought into compliance within 5 years. As with all lighting ordinances in the region, the goal is education and awareness, not strict enforcement. The maximum fine for a violation was reduced to $200 from $500 in the previous ordinance. County officials could not recall the last time such a fine was even issued, as in almost every case a solution was found before it got to that point.

Big Bend Conservation Alliance is looking for your support to help raise funds to qualify with the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) as an internationally recognized Dark Sky Reserve.  If the application is accepted, the Big Bend Region will be greater in size than the other 18 Dark Sky Reserves in the world combined.  Every donor and every dollar to the Serious Starlight Fundraiser sends a message to the IDA that the dark skies of Far West Texas are an important and valued asset.  This fundraiser shows needed support for the application and gives Big Bend Conservation Alliance funds to reduce light pollution in the Big Bend.  Visit the Serious Starlight GoFundMe page to learn more and participate:

SHOT TIME LIQUORS
Life is sweet here in Terlingua. And it is even sweeter when it involves Tequila with Pineapple and Jalapeños! That’s what we call La Dulce Vida. And we carry just that .... in 3 different sizes even! Yep, we have Dulce Vida Tequila with Pineapple and Jalapeños in 750ml, 375ml, and even the little bitty airplane bottles. So we can sweeten up your life in any size that you want! Dulce Vida Tequila also comes in Reposado and Añejo for more discerning drinkers.
And while you are in the store, pause for half a moment and look around. After all, it’s been a year since you have been inside. We have added lots of new products in this last year. Especially those yummy ice cream treats in the freezer parked right by the door. Oh those frozen Snickers are sometimes hard to resist..... and they are only $2. In any case - ALWAYS REMEMBER TO DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Ricky Salazar is asking for help:  We have a huge windmill that was blown down during the last strong winds we had, need to be hauled off, a lot of scrap metal.  Also have more things that need to be hauled off.  The windmill would require a torch to cut it up.
