Butch is up for any adventure and even calms down nicely when asked. He would do best as an only dog and in a home with cats. Butch is ready and able to learn all you have to teach him. Butch is neutered, micro-chipped and vaccinated. For more information on Butch or any of the 12 dogs and cats in the Alpine shelter, please call 432-837-9030 or email admin@alphinehumanesociety.org.
Big Bend National Park - Castolon Fire Update
As the sun rises on a new day, we think of all the things we are grateful for - and our firefighters and park visitors are certainly on the top of that list. Thank you to the outpouring of support over the last week while crews were working to save structures, defend the campground, and put out the Castolon Fire. Your kind messages were so appreciated by park staff and the fire crews.
And we are also most grateful for the work of the firefighters. The Los Diablos fire crew remains in the park, working to put out the last of the hot spots within the perimeter. The fire is estimated as 90% contained at this time. The Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive remains closed at Mile 22, but access to Santa Elena Canyon is available via the dirt Old Maverick Road.
The park is working towards reopening the Castolon Historic District and surrounding areas for visitors, but this will take time. We will need to ensure that the area around the two damaged structures are appropriately fenced for safety reasons. While we are working on this we thank you for your continued patience. Over the upcoming weeks and months we will be assessing our options for how to move forward following this incident.
As things begin to reopen, we urge visitors not to enter burned areas. Heat can remain in burned mesquite stumps and smolder in roots for quite some time. Additionally, if roots burned, this can leave pockets likely to collapse under weight. For your safety, do not enter burned areas. Thank you for your help!
