"Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer. Camp out among the grasses and gentians of glacial meadows, in craggy garden nooks full of nature's darlings. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings, Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is closed, but nature's sources never fail."
~John Muir
Voices From Both Sides, an international community music project, Saturday, May 9, 11 am to 7 pm, at Lajitas, Texas/Paso Lajitas (near Lajitas Golf Resort). The closing of this border between the US and Mexico on Mother’s Day weekend of 2002 separated families, friends, and community in this remote region of Big Bend, Texas. Beginning in 2013, residents of Terlingua—a neighboring community 17 miles east of Lajitas—Jeff Haislip and Collie Ryan -organized the 1st “Fiesta Protesta” as a way to bring attention to the need to reopen the border. “Music and art, not politics, will open our border,” Haislip said.
"We know with the world as it is today this is rare and a fragile balance of politics. Nonetheless, we are envisioned to proceed and sing our way to an open border."

Call for art for 2016 Terlingua Artists wall calendar:
The calendar project is being coordinated under the non-profit umbrella of the Big Bend Citizens Alliance. With its support, we are able to raise funds through sponsorship and sales of the calendar, as we did with the 2015 calendar. The funds may not be used to pay artists, but may be used to promote art in general in the community. For example, with the funds raised, we would be able to purchase some display systems and units for local exhibitions.
This year, submission for consideration is open to any artist who makes his or her home in the Terlingua area for a significant part of the year. Digital images of visual art in any genre may be submitted for consideration to be included in the calendar. A committee has been formed to administer the project and will select the artwork from the submissions. Lauren Stedman of Menagerie Press is our designer, and the calendar will be printed at Printco in Alpine.
If you are interested in submitting work, please contact Mary Paloma Diesel at432-371-2999 or spottedslinky55@gmail.com, and she will send you more detailed entry requirements. The deadline for requesting that information is May 31. The deadline for submissions is to be determined.
2nd Annual Fowler-Tolbert Chili Cook-off Art Show:
Just a heads-up that a second art show is being planned for Saturday at the cook-off "behind the store." Last year was a fun and profitable event for local and other artists, graciously hosted by Kathleen Tolbert Ryan and her husband Paul. This year's curators will be Mary Paloma Diesel, Dani Bottenfield and Molly Dumas. Look for more Moon postings and posters around the area soon.

KING is a stunning black pit bull with white markings and amber eyes. He weighs about 50 pounds, but isn’t gaining weight in the shelter - he still needs to fill out a little. However, he is full grown and estimated to be 2 years old. KING is one snuggly pit bull – his dream life involves daily walks/runs with plenty of time to sniff around, and extended periods of time spent with YOU on the floor/sofa/bed. Be warned, KING has a thing for laps! He walks well on a leash and badly wants to please his human, making him a great candidate for more advanced training. KING is good with other dogs and curious about the world beyond the shelter. Come visit KING and give him a treat – his gentle nibble is a great demonstration of his sweet, eager-to-please doggy self! AAS is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm), located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. KING (and all the dogs at AAS) is on Petfinder at: https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/31355685
