From Ms. Reed: Laila Salido, Yareli Aviles, Melenie Orozco, and Kaycie Krueger participated in an Informational Meeting put on by the University of Texas-Arlington on Thursday, January 28th from 4pm-6pm. They learned about the application process for entry into the Upward Bound-Math and Science program. The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA will meet this  Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte. The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem. We meet in a group of less than five, wear masks, and practice Social Distancing.

The Cinnabar Theater may be dark, but Big Bend talent still shines.  In cooperation with the Terlingua School, Last Minute Low Budget Productions is hosting a Virtual Talent Show.  The contest will be held near the end of March (details coming soon) and is open to all Terlingua-area residents.  A panel of judges will view performances online and vote.  After judges have had a few days to watch the performances, they will be posted online and winners announced.  Anyone wanting to be a judge should email bourbon@bigbend.net

EARTH and FIRE Gallery  We will be hosting Marti Anderson as our guest artist for the month of February.  Marti is a talented artist in both oils and watercolors.   She will be showing a fine collection of bluebonnet watercolors created especially for this show at our gallery.   Marti will also  be hosting two workshops while she is here this month.  The first is a two day "en plen air" oil painting workshop on Feb. 11 and 12th.  Learn how to paint in the great outdoors....or "brush up" on new techniques.  The second will be a one day "journaling with watercolors" event that explores how to spruce up those diaries and/or travel journals we all keep.  Materials will be provided for this class including watercolors, brushes, and a journal to take with you.  Cost is $50.00 and class size is limited.  Join us for the fun (there may be some wine involved.....) on Feb. 14th.  What better way to celebrate valentines day than creating art with friends.  You can contact Earth and Fire gallery at 371-2637 for more information or to sign up for a workshop.

The Terlingua Community Gardeners will be available this Friday 2/5 at 10 a.m. and Saturday 2/6 at 10 a.m.   Pick a garden plot and get ready to plant.

Now is the time to plant your greens.  We have some seeds available, but bring your favorites to get started.

Due to construction delays caused by the public health crisis, the park's closure has been extended. The on-going Balmorhea State Park construction projects are managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Infrastructure Division, so park staff are unable to directly provide updates on the projects and potential park reopening dates. The Infrastructure Division collaborates with TPWD’s Press Office to produce project status updates. Hi all! Because of Covid-19 there will only be a virtual 12th annual Texas Independence Day Parade in our minds on March 2nd and so please observe it the best that you can.  Hope to see you next year.

Veterans Administration is moving to a digital check issue. There has been problems with Veterans getting paper checks from VA. One of the biggest is someone other than the Veteran getting the check before the Veteran does and cashing it.  VA hopes this will stop issues with getting money to Veterans on time. Also if you want to change bank account information you can call 1-800-827-1000 and ask for agent or go to VA.gov and log into your VA account. Before trying to make changes have your bank routing and account numbers.

Terlingua MOON
January 19, 2021
Vol.  32       No. 3

When we look at modern man we have to face the fact that modern man suffers from a kind of poverty of the spirit which stands in glaring contrast with a  scientific and technological abundance.
We’ve learned to fly the air as birds .
We’ve learned to swim the seas as fish .
Yet we haven’t learned to walk the earth as brothers and sisters.
~ Martin Luther King Jr.

“How many legs does a dog have if you call his tail a leg? Four. Saying that a tail is a leg doesn't make it a leg.”

-- Abraham Lincoln

PREVENTATIVE CARE HEALTH SERVICES, INC. -- The PCHS staff has successfully completed the first shipment of Covid-19 vaccines. 424 doses were administered. We thank all of our staff and volunteers for going above and beyond to make this happen. At this time, we DO NOT have any additional Covid-19 vaccines and we DO NOT yet know when we will receive more.

We thank our communities for being patient during this process. We ask that you DO NOT call our clinics to inquire about the vaccine. We have been overwhelmed with calls and want to be able to take care of our regular day to day activities and appointments.

More information about signing up for a Covid-19 vaccine will be posted here next week so we can prepare for our next shipment.

COVID VACCINE UPDATES – Week 5 allocations have been announced. New shipments are coming to both Presidio and Brewster counties. For more information, you can visit the Texas Department of State Health Services website at: https://www.dshs.texas.gov/news/updates/COVIDVaccineAllocation- Week5.pdf

As of January 10, Brewster County had 881 confirmed cases, including 66 active cases. Please do your part to keep our community safe.

I also wanted you all to know that our application for services is now on-line at our website www.mealsforvets.org. This makes it easier for a veteran who may be in need of our services to apply and upload any documents that would be required to qualify for services.  Just to refresh, we assist veterans who are primarily under age 60, are struggling financially and cannot afford to access a daily, nutritious meal. We do this by contracting with local meals providers in the area where the veteran resides (e.g., Meals on Wheels) who in-turn, deliver a daily, around noon- time meal to the veteran’s residence five days a week. If a meal provider is not in an area where a veteran resides, we ship precooked, refrigerated meals to the veteran’s residence via Federal Express. Since our founding, Meals for Vets has been privileged to have served nearly 200,000 meals to veterans who might not have been able to access a meal any other way. I appreciate you taking the time out of your schedule to read this and if you have any questions or would like updates on our program, please feel free to email or call me at the number below. CHEERS TO ALL THE EMPLOYERS treating their workers well in these busy, COVID crazy times.  With so much traffic, money, and germs flowing in, employers who pay a fair and decent wage-- even for part timers (the majority)-- get real respect.  This editor urges ALL employers to participate in the “trickle down” effect by giving workers regular bonuses, commissions, and pay raises when business is raking it in.  Help build a stronger, more generous *equitable* community from the bottom up!
