Study Butte Water Effort Continues
Water hauling efforts will continue today for Study Butte residents who have been without water for 11 days. Lajitas Resorts and Big Bend Resorts and Adventures have been providing water to SBWSC residents who have been affected by the outage. The SBWSC system customers include all of Terlingua Ghostown and Study Butte. Water to the Terlingua side of the system was restored June 23 while supply to Study Butte has been restricted due to insufficient water production. Trucks from TX Forest Service, Pecos County, Big Bend National Park, and Terlingua Fire and EMS will continue to transport water to the Study Butte storage tank.
A lightening strike 10 days ago damaged the pump motor to the main water well which was capable of producing up to 150 gallons per minute. The SBWSC is currently producing less than 50 gpm which is insufficient to provide the system pressure and volume needed for the community. Approximately half of SBWSC customers remain without water today.
The new motor which was built to withstand high temperatures was supplied by Franklin Electric in Oklahoma is expected to arrive today. “Once we get the motor installed we will be able to produce more water to satisfy our community demands” said SBWSC plant operator Jason Blanton.
Transporting water will continue throughout until the system can be restored to normal operations. SBWSC hopes to be able to begin pressurizing the system when sufficient water has been transported.
All residents are advised to continue water conservation while the system is being repaired. Level 4 Water Conservation Emergency measures remains in effect and the Boil Water notice is still in effect. This means water may be used for normal household use while watering lawns, gardens, washing vehicles is prohibited. Any water used for consumption should be boiled prior to use (see www.studybuttewater.com for details).
Bottled drinking water has been donated by numerous organizations and is available to those in need at the Brewster County Emergency Services Center in Terlingua. Drinking water remains available to those in need at the Terlingua EMS building from daily 10am to 2pm.

[This editor has four relatively small buildings with roof catchment amounting to around 1800-2000sq ft. with tanks allowing around 12,000 gallons of roof catchment. Nessa is an extremely nice 2-year old lab mix who loves kids, walks on a leash like a dream, takes treats gently, plays fetch and will pick a tennis ball over food every time. Kids are probably her favorite demographic but she loves all things playful. She is enthusiastic with other dogs and is learning quickly at the shelter. Study Butte residents will struggle again today without water as an all out effort will be made to fill the Bee Mtn storage tank. Additional trucks are expected from Alpine and Ft. Stockton to assist in hauling water to the tank. When sufficient has been delivered SBWSC will again pressurize the lines to deliver water to residents. Pressurization of the lines may take up to 24 hrs and residents are strictly urged to limit water use while pressurization occurs.
Transporting water will continue throughout until the system can be restored to normal operations. Expectations are high that the new pump motor will be ready for delivery tomorrow. SBWSC hopes to be able to begin producing water this week after 8 days of restricted production. Production remains at 42 gallons per minute (gpm) which is not enough to maintain sufficient pressure in the system and meet the demands of the customers. At capacity, almost 200 gallons of water (GPM) can be produced.
With the all out effort, volunteers with a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) are needed to help relieve drivers. Volunteers are encouraged to contact Terlingua Fire and EMS today at 432-371-3103 or Jason Blanton at 432-599-3232.

Water is now available to most of the area. Use is very high and if use is not curtailed we will run out of water. Running out of water means the system will be shut down until water volume can be increased in our storage tanks.
Level 4 Emergency Water Conservation conditions have been declared and it is important to not waste water. Residents should not wash vehicles, water lawns, fill kiddie pools, use water carelessly; residents should make sure taps are closed, not leaking, and ensure each family member helps in our conservation efforts. Water needed for consumption should be boiled as per the posted Boil Water notice.
Water will continue to be trucked to the Bee Mtn tank. Crews delivered another 14000 gallons today and will continue the effort tomorrow.

We have shown great concern for our neighbors during this crisis and we still need a strong conservation effort to ensure all our neighbors have water.

Residents should not wash vehicles, water lawns, fill kiddie pools, use water carelessly; residents should make sure taps are closed, not leaking, and ensure each family member helps in our conservation efforts. Water needed for consumption should be boiled as per the posted Boil Water notice.
Water will continue to be trucked to the Bee Mtn tank. Crews delivered another 14000 gallons today and will continue the effort tomorrow.
Drinking water remains availed to everyone at the Terlingua ESB from 10 am to 2 pm.
We have shown great concern for our neighbors during this crisis and we still need a strong conservation effort to ensure all our neighbors have water.

MOON XTRA #6, #7 and #8
LA POSADA MILAGRO's Espresso...y Poco Mas will be open always 7 days a week..7:30-1pm.
Come and enjoy great Big Bend Coffee Roasters and French Toast/fresh eggs/Wrights bacon and smoothies and juices and sodas and lots of good delicious sandwiches, everything made as you like it.
We have free Wifi and please enjoy it even after we have closed. In the heart of the TERLINGUA GHOSTOWN. We may not have water but we are still open and the food and drinks are great.
Water was turned on to Study Butte this afternoon. The lower reaches of the system are now getting water...the system is filling slowly to prevent hi pressure blowouts on weaker portions of the system. For example, the La Kiva is the lowest tap and is getting water now. Those living at elevations above Terlingua Creek will have water later than those residents living lower. Patience will see us through at upper elevations as await a fully pressured system. The west side and Terlingua Ghostown are expected to be turned on as the eastern portion fills.
So far so good...let's sleep soundly tonight knowing we can shower in the morning.

Water has been restored to Study Butte and the lower elevations on the system are now getting some water. Upper elevations will likely have water by morning. The pressure is slowly being raised to prevent damage to the system. For example, La Kiva is the lowest tap on the system and it now has water - those living at elevation will get water after the lower portion has filled.
The west side and Terlingua Ghostown will be pressured as the Study Butte side fills. We should all have water in the morning for a nice short shower...
There are a lot of folks to thank at this point...

Also, Bottled Drinking water is available at the General Store. Please bring a copy of your water bill and your own container to fill. Hours of availability are 8am-5pm daily and will be distributed based on demand so please be sure to call in advance. Shower facilities at Maverick Ranch RV park are available to SBWSC customers during this time as well-please contact the Maverick Ranch RV park at 432-424-5180 for more information”
