OREO has been waiting for his family at the Alpine shelter for more than 6 months. A special advocate has been taking him off-site twice a week to do some enrichment and keep him from despair. He loves these outings – the car, the ability to run at top speed, and good fun with other dogs. Oreo is showing good progress in his leash training and manners, and is kid-tested and kid-approved! He is a beautiful dog, now about 16-18 months old. His DNA test identified his mutt-ly greatness: Australian shepherd, malamute, husky and Staffordshire terrier. Oreo is an athletic 50 pounds and is neutered, microchipped and up to date on all shots. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. 13th ANNUAL CHIHUAHUA RACES at FCCBB in the Ghostown -- A day of food, music, and dog racing, the Chihuahua Races will be held in the Ghostown on Saturday, March 19, 2016. Events start around noon with registration beginning at 10:00 am. All small dogs are welcome to participate in raising money, smiles and morale for the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend. Prizes go to winners and placers in multiple events and categories including costume contest. Amazing prizes donated by generous local businesses and individuals.

Glimmer of Light Lori Griffin will host her annual art show at Earth & Fire Gallery Opening on March 19, 6 -9pm. Titled “Glimmer of Light,” to represent the featuring of functional art including but not exclusively creative light fixtures, the show consists of actual light products, functional art of sculptures and fixtures that can be used in a home, other glass work with recycled material such as painted on glass, stained glass, and mosaics and unique art of mixed media from various techniques. Guaranteed no two art pieces alike. There will be some print options from the original work. Also Lori will be showing art journals—one-of-a-kind family oriented pieces, intended to inspire kids to be artistic and creative, to journal without words and with images, for unique story telling in each family. Democratic Party Convention--The Precinct and County Conventions will be at District Courtroom Brewster County Courthouse, Sat. March 19. Registration opens at 2PM. The Convention will be called to order at 215PM. Pre-register online at Register.txdemocrats.org. At the convention, delegates sign up to go to the Texas Democratic Convention in San Antonio in June. Delegates will be pledged to support their presidential preference. In addition, participants can submit resolutions (policy recommendations) which will be forwarded to the Texas Democratic Party for consideration.

The Cinnabar Theater was rocked with full houses for the two weekends of Reefer Madness, by Joe Landry, Playscripts, Inc.  The audiences saw eight actors giving it their all; Billy Miller, Troy Sergent, Moises Martinez, Pablo Menudo, Shoshana Perkins, Deena Nolan, Chris Lee, and Elizabeth Thompson.

BIG BEND ADVENTURES
The Terlingua 3rd and 4th graders had an amazing overnight field trip in Big Bend National Park last week! We did a lot of hiking, exploring, and learning. Our favorite hikes were Santa Elena Canyon and Cattail Falls.  We'd like to thank Ranger Maria Lavender and Ranger Daphne Sewing for the Star Party and the Geology Program. Thank you to our sponsors, Ms. Mague Palma, Ms. Rachel Crockett, Mr. Mark Gilmore, Ranger Michael Ryan, and Ms. Bernadette Devine. And thank you to Ms. Bobbie Jones for always encouraging us.

Lama Tsultrim Yeshe (American born John Samuelson) is an ordained Tibetan Buddhist teacher, who also served as a prison chaplain for 16 years. He travels frequently throughout the US, teaching meditation practices and sharing Buddhist perspectives on emotional healing, forgiveness, and trauma recovery. He was invited by Sandy Hook Promise to bring his healing message to Newtown, CT in the aftermath of the tragic school shooting there. He is coming to Terlingua as part of a Western US teaching tour.

WANNA BOOGIE?
BOOGIE is a 3 month-old heeler mix.  He's a typical working-dog-breed puppy: alert, athletic, and very cuddly, wiggly and playful.  This guy could do any job you give to him, even if that job is fetching a ball every day for a good amount of time, or learning to high five and roll over.  BOOGIE plays king of the mountain on a human lap, and is willing to share that lap with other pups.  He was found with his friend Peach, much smaller than him, and he treats her tenderly, so it's clear that BOOGIE will be a good friend to everyone. Big Bend High School students dominated at Big Bend Regional History Fair at Sul Ross. The whole team is heading to the State History Fair in Austin in April. Sam-U-L is back in town!
The Earth and Fire Art Gallery is having not one but two artist receptions this week.  The first is on the first, as we open Sam’s Spring show on Tuesday.  Wine and snacks at 4 pm.  Then on Saturday, The Gallery is hosting their First Saturday Art Market and another reception to welcome new partners, Michelle Billings and Kathy Gilles, as well as kicking off our Spring Break run.  For this event, we are having fun all day and continuing well into the night with a campfire, music, even more wine and chances of s’mores.  Please bring your art and treasures to sell at The Art Market and then join us later for the reception and campfire!

Tuesday, the 23rd, Big Bend Resort and Adventures restaurant and store will be open from 7 to 11 am only. A new register system is being installed and the store and restaurant will be closed for the installation. No gas will be available after 11 am on Tuesday. Terlingua Photo Project
I’ve been looking for some way to connect with somebody in Terlingua about a possible photo project. I’m a freelance photographer in Dallas with 30+ years experience.  I come down to Big Bend at least twice a year to photograph the environment of the area and have been doing so since 2003. My Big Bend work is part of the permanent collection of Texas photography at the Grace Museum in Abilene (Bill Wright of Alpine established the collection) and I have representation of my Big Bend photography in San Antonio at the Robert Hughes Gallery (the work can be viewed on my website at www.terrycockerhamphotography.com.)
The photo project I’m interested in doing is something along the lines of what Richard Avedon did in his book “In the American West”. I would set up a simple backdrop outside (weather permitting) and photograph those individuals willing to participate. Each participant would have to sign a release and in return for their cooperation they would receive a fine art portrait  (a 10” X 15” image centered on a 13” X 19” sheet of archival paper) once the project is processed.
Is this something in which the residents of Terlingua might be interested in experiencing?

Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest
The 6th annual Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest hosted over 500 riders and led dozens of guided rides, all to benefit the Big Bend Trails Alliance. 71 riders tackled the 53-mile IMBA epic in one day, the oldest rider being 83 years old. Many thanks to Desert Sports, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Big Bend National Park and Lajitas Resort for their coordinated efforts to make this event a giant success! Much gratitude to the fabulous volunteers and to the local sponsoring eateries: Starlight Theater, Big Bend Motor Inn, Chili Pepper,  Espresso Y Poco Mas, High Sierra Bar & Grill, and The Boathouse!

Library Presentation

Benji’s Memorial
A local who many of us have known for decades recently passed away at his home. Benji Bell was a unique and talented man. His life was simple and he was happiest creating his art and living life on his own terms above Terlingua Creek. Friends of Benji’s, old and new, are welcome to join together for a memorial at The La Kiva (a place dear to him since the early ‘80s) - next Sat., Feb., 27th, between 2 & 4 p.m. Please bring a pot-luck, or finger-food item, and disposable plates and forks if you have them.  Drinks will be available.  Make music, if you like.  Most importantly, please bring your Benji stories, photos, and memories.  He wants us to be happy that he is at peace.  (Questions? First Saturday Art Market
March 5th is the next First Saturday Art Market for The Earth and Fire Art Gallery. This one promises to be more special than ever!   In addition to the Art Market, The Gallery will also be holding an Artist’s Reception and Campfire. Kicking off at 9 am with local and area artists displaying their treasures and art outside The Gallery, the day should be fun for all. The Artist Reception for Guest Artists; Sam-U-El, Cathy Gillis, and Michelle Billings, will be that same evening from 7 to 9. We are lighting a campfire and having local musicians that evening as well.  All local artists are invited to come out and show us what they have been doing all winter!

La Kiva
Well the big week finally arrived.  The air extractor hoods are going to be installed in La Kiva’s kitchen starting on Wednesday the 24th of February. It should not be long before we can actually open the kitchen and start serving food.
On the music scene we have open mic on Wednesday, Jack Alice and Arjay on Friday,  Saturday is a rare treat with Dacey Sultanov giving a cello recital in the cave room.  Darcey will be accompanied by Aileen Hummel on the piano.  This is a very special event and we are asking for a $10 donation per person to offset some of the costs incurred.  Dacey studied in Riga, Latvia followed by the Central Music School in Moscow and the Moscow Conservatory of Music in Russia.  We are very pleased and honored that Dacey has agreed to perform at La Kiva.  The recital starts at 7:30 PM and runs until it ends.
On Saturday at 3:00 PM we are having a celebration of the life of Benji to be held at La Kiva.  There will be a pot luck and the bar will open at 3:00.  Bring a dish to share.  Depending on the state of our kitchen, La Kiva will provide some snack food.

St. Paddy’s Day Parade

Early voting for the March 1 primary election starts
Tuesday, February 16, and ends on February 26. Presidio County registered voters can vote from 8am to 12pm and from 1 to 5pm at the Presidio County Courthouse in Marfa and at the food bank building next to the Presidio County Courthouse Annex in Presidio.
In Brewster County, voters can go the polls from 8:30am to 5pm during early voting at the Brewster County Commissioners’ Courtroom. Extended hours are 8:30am to 7pm on Thursday, February 18 and Thursday, February 25. Those in Study Butte and Terlingua can vote from 11am to 3pm on Tuesday, February 16, at the Red Pattillo Community Center in South Brewster County.

RECYCLING NOTE: Thanks go to Sue and Dan Carlson, Todd Bureau, John Calomini, Barb and Jim Hines, Sue and Joe Rife, Edwardo in the Park, and help from his friend Shannon, for emptying the recycling trailer...it is back in business. We are looking for someone to take over the responsibility of the trailer during the summer. It involves contacting the park to schedule a time and rounding up volunteers, a half ton pick up (or larger) is necessary with at least a V-8 engine. Please no auto fluid containers, nor ANY plastic sacks (they are not recycling). Thanks to everyone who makes the effort to rinse containers and putting their recycling in the proper bin.

4th Annual Christmas Mountains Research Symposium
May 23-25, 2016 – Terlingua Ranch headquarters. This two-day symposium will highlight research by students and faculty from universities in the Texas State University System, but welcomes contributions from researchers at other universities, federal and state agency personnel, and residents of the area who have investigated aspects of the region’s ecology, geology, culture and history. Presenters should plan to give a 15-minute talk followed by five minutes of questions and discussion. Power Point presentations will be supported, but are not required. The symposium will begin with an evening social on Monday, May 23rd. Each of the two following days will have field trips scheduled in the morning and presentations scheduled for the afternoon. The symposium will close with a dinner Wednesday evening, May 25th. A modest registration fee ($40) will cover the social, dinner on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, daily refreshments, snacks, etc.

Slim Fest oNe - Thank You!!
Thank you to everyone who came to Slim Fest oNe this past weekend to honor the late, great Slim Richey and to kick up their heels while doing so. We'd especially like to thank the incredible musicians who not only came from many distant places to perform at the festival but many of whom had to leave soon after their sets to get back on tour or travel to their next gig. We would especially like to thank those who supported the festival in one way or another, most of all the festival attendees and Underwriters. Folks came from as far away as New York, California and Indiana to honor Slim and hear some of their favorite musicians. THE BOATHOUSE

VIRGIL CLARK
It is with great sadness that I must inform you that our dear friend, Virgil Clark, 63 of Terlingua; passed yesterday evening at home. A memorial service will be held on March 27 with details to be announced later. The family has requested that no flowers be sent at this time. Other details pertaining to donations to various charities will also be provided later.  Our thoughts and prayers go to his family and his wife Sharon.

CASA HOGAR ORPHANAGE
Across the street, in Ojinaga, Mexico, is the Casa Hogar Orphanage with 36-40 children.  Some have "special needs."  Some have been removed from abusive homes. Some have been removed from addict's homes.  Some have been living on the street in the cold. Subsequent mayors of Ojinaga have always fully supported the children, ages 2-17; paying for the electricity, their rides to school and back, and especially, their psychologist, until this one.
The present mayor doesn't understand the need for a therapist to give the children the tools to cope.
Would you help?  We need $1000 as soon as possible to secure a psychologist for the coming year.

Wildland Fire at Big Bend National Park
A wildland fire was ignited at approximately 4:45 PM on February 1st when heavy winds caused a power line to fall, igniting a fire near Panther Junction. The fire was burning in grassland and brush habitat.
Strong winds, up to forty miles per hour, pushed the fire to the east and northeast of Panther Junction during the evening of February 1st. Park and Terlingua Fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire, notified park visitors and staff, ensured visitor safety and protected park resources in the vicinity of the fire. Higher humidity, colder temperatures, and somewhat diminished winds help slow the fire during the evening hours, along with fire fighter efforts to work hot spots along the fire perimeter.
The fire was worked by up to 75 personnel. The fire burned an estimated 1792 acres, and was contained as of 6pm on February 6th. No park structures were damaged nor have any injuries occurred. Fire personnel have been released and are returning to their home units.
This fire is an example of how spring winds, dry conditions, and high fuel loads can quickly spread flame and promote burning. Visitors are asked to be careful with any heat sources, and especially open flames.

The National Park Service (NPS) this week released its Fiscal Year 2015 deferred maintenance statistics for national parks. The $11.9 billion nationwide total was up from the $11.49 billion report at the end of FY2014. Big Bend National Park is one of the parks with deferred maintenance, with a total of $91,051,080 in deferred maintenance projects. Deferred maintenance is necessary work on infrastructure, such as road and bridges, visitor centers, trails, and campgrounds that has been put off for more than a year. Aging facilities, increasing use of park facilities, and insufficient maintenance funding contribute to the growing backlog. Among Big Bend’s highest priorities for deferred maintenance include the headquarters building, water systems, and wastewater systems, each built during the 50th anniversary of the NPS. Additional projects include primary park roads, the Chisos Basin campground, and historic stone cottages.
Congressional funding for the National Park Service in 2016 includes an additional $90 million for nontransportation maintenance. Congress also passed a new highway bill which will provide a $28 million increase for transportation projects in parks this year. Funding for transportation-related maintenance and construction will continue to rise, by $8 million per year for five years, until it reaches $300 million per year in 2020.
Superintendent Cindy Ott-Jones says, “We are inviting the world to discover the special places in the National Park System, like Big Bend National Park, during our centennial celebration. We need to have facilities that can accommodate guests and provide the best possible visitor experience. We hope to see additional resources for parks to improve visitor services, such as the Centennial bill that Congress is considering presently.”

Voting for the spring election will be held from 7 am to 7 pm on Tuesday, March 1.  Early voting in Terlingua will be at the Community Center from 11am to 3 pm on the 16th.

On May 7, 2015, the Texas State Legislature invested Dr. Carmen Tafolla of San Antonio as the Poet Laureate of the State of Texas. Dr. Tafolla's goal is to make poetry and writing workshops accessible to all Texans, especially those audiences who have had the least opportunity to enjoy poetry in the state’s public schools.  She designed a year-long project, Planting Poet Trees, and invited schools across Texas that serve students from low-income families to apply.  An Advisory Committee assisted Dr. Tafolla in selecting the 20 schools. We are excited to announce that Terlingua High School competed and was chosen as one of the 20 campuses statewide to participate in the Planting Poet Trees program !The State Poet Laureate will visit each school to provide an inspiring motivational speech about the power of education, a poetry reading, and two writing workshops.  Through local poetry presentations, Dr. Tafolla will also share this message bilingually with the students’ teachers, administrators, parents and family members.   Finally, Wings Press in San Antonio will print an anthology of selected poetry from students in the project schools and other students from around the state. I served on the Planting Poet Trees Advisory Committee and helped to review the many applications. I was very, very proud of Terlingua! They truly deserve to be one of the 20 selected schools.  And Dr. Tafolla will visit Terlingua High School on Wednesday, February 4th, 2016, to engage teachers and students in creative expression and writing.
The State of Texas, however, does not provide one penny to the Poet Laureate. Dr. Tafolla and a group of volunteers are working to raise funds for her visits to the 20 low-income schools all over the state.
One of our major objectives is to donate 15 poetry books to each school’s library. We've raised a little over $1,700 so far, but 15 books averaged out at about $18-$20 becomes $300 x 20 = $6,000. You can see that we've got a long way to go!

Chisos Basin Campground Reservation Period Extension.  The Chisos Basin family campground offers visitors the opportunity for advanced campsite reservations as part of the National Recreation Reservation System (NRRS). The NRRS reservation period for the Chisos Basin family campground, which mirrors the park’s busy season, will be extended to May 31st each year. This change will start in 2016 with the revised Chisos Basin family campground reservation period of November 15th through May 31st each year for the Chisos Basin only. Rio Grande Village family campground will remain the same with reservations possible November 15th through April 15th.Visitors can make a reservation with the NRRS at http://www.recreation.gov

The agenda is attached - the only item is budget amendments. The major adjustments are good news. Due to a law passed this last legislative session affecting certain school districts and having to do with compressed tax rates we will be getting about 90K more in state money than we anticipated.
Also, we had budgeted for professional services such as the cost of the monitor that TEA assigned us last year due to our Accreditation - Warned status that we have not needed due to the school's improvement to Met Standards.
Ms. Jones would like to use some of that money to purchase a couple of new vehicles. Our newest vehicle is a 2007, and the two oldest are 2003 models. Also for a new slab, I believe to replace a cracked outdoor area slab at the elementary school.
As always, please feel welcome to attend. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Wednesday the 17th.
