SEPTEMBER FULL MOON NAMES
The September full Moon is usually known as the Full Corn Moon because it traditionally corresponds with the time of harvesting corn. It is also called the Barley Moon because this is the time to harvest and thresh ripened barley. Often, the September Moon is also called the Harvest Moon, but this year the Harvest Moon occurs in October. The Harvest Moon is the Moon that falls nearest the autumnal equinox; this full Moon provides the most light at the time when it’s needed most—to complete the harvest! Some other traditional September Full Moon names used by Native Americans include:
“Moon When the Plums Are Scarlet” by the Lakota Sioux Native Americans.
“Moon When the Deer Paw the Earth” by the Omaha Native Americans.
“Moon When the Calves Grow Hair” by the Sioux Native Americans

The Big Bend High School Student Council would like to invite all First Responders, veterans, and the community to a ceremony for Patriots’ Day and Texas First Responders’ Day on September 11, 2017, at 8:10 am at the High School flagpole.

National Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month. Our nation sets aside this month to remember the challenges we have overcome and reinforce the need for all to be prepared for disasters and emergencies. Being prepared is a shared responsibility; it takes the entire community. This September, I urge all Texans to commit to accomplishing the following simple tasks:
Learn about hazards in your community and how to properly prepare and respond to them
Build an emergency kit
Make a communications plan
Get involved in community preparedness by volunteering
Every incident and disaster, whether natural or manmade, presents us with unique elements and often unexpected consequences. Don't be lulled into thinking that the last big disaster was as bad as it could get, as there just may be another record waiting to be broken.

9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance
September 11, 2001, forever changed our country. We lost friends, neighbors, and family members, but we gained a new sense of unity; a reminder of belonging to something bigger than ourselves. We realized a need to reevaluate our perspective towards emergency management and homeland security, and in doing so, became stronger. As we have pieced together a new strategy to protect and defend our nation, the effects have been felt not only at the national level but also at the state and local levels; in surges of volunteerism alone, this new generation has answered the call to service. As another school year begins and we settle back into our familiar routines, it is imperative that we do not forget what we experienced 16 years ago. September 11, while a tragedy, brought with it solidarity, patriotism, and a reminder that tomorrow is never a guarantee. That dark day inspired communities across the nation to face the challenges of a global society head on. We remember those we lost, but do so in a way that our children understand the meaning of these words: Duty, Honor, Country.
David Lambrix, EMC-MEP, Brewster County, Office of Emergency Management

U.S. Representative Will Hurd released the following statement regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA.
“There is no doubt that our immigration system is broken. Congress must provide a permanent, legislative solution for children brought here through no fault of their own.  We should create immigration policies that strengthen our economy and keep Americans safe, which is why I look forward to working with my colleagues to make a permanent, legislative solution that allows people who have only known America as their home, to stay and continue contributing to our Nation's culture, economy and history.”

Smokey is an 18-month old pit bull mix who is wonderfully well-mannered. He gets along with everyone he meets – human, small human, and all other dogs - and is a real snugglebug. He walks wonderfully on a leash, is perfectly housetrained and will do anything for a treat. Smokey was rescued from the Fort Stockton shelter and is being fostered in Alpine. For more information about him, or any pet in the Alpine Shelter, email heatherthemule@gmail.com

Okay folks, quit telling me that you don't know what the purple painted posts mean.
It tells me that you don't read, or refuse to pay attention to the laws in Texas.
Or the state you live in if it adheres to this law. Ignorance of this can, and will, land you in jail. If you consider ignorance "bliss"?
Well I guess you'll just blissfully sit behind bars, waiting for bail..
I, and others, have posted on various pages many times about this law over the past few years.  Please help us in spreading this information. Btw, a little purple every 1,000 feet is better than plastic littering the land. Imo..
