Volume 28 ~ #28

Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light. Albert Schweitzer

 Because some things bear repeating!
During our water emergency, the offers of support from our neighboring communities and the many businesses, organizations, and individuals helped to see us through this crisis. We are grateful to everyone who demonstrated the spirit of goodwill that truly defines west Texas.  This list will never be complete and we will forever be indebted to those nameless individuals who showed up to help.
Our thanks to Sheriff Ronny Dodson and Sheriff Deputy Patrick Hardin, Brewster County Sheriff’s Department; Congressman Will Hurd; J.D. Robb, Don Trussell, Joseph Welch, and Malynda Richardson, Terlingua Fire and EMS; John Perkins, USDA; West Texas Food Bank; The Red Cross; Lisa Taylor, Big Bend Regional Hospital District; Family Crisis Center; Lajitas On The Rio Grande; Big Bend Resorts and Adventures; Tony Drewry, Big Bend Brewery; Mr. Horry and the City of Alpine; Brewster County Judge Eleazar Cano and Brewster County Commissioner Ruben Ortega; The Water Factory, Ft. Stockton; Alma Duarte, TCEQ; Pecos County; Texas A&M Forest Service; Steve Benevides and Romaldo Pena, Big Bend National Park; Alpine Coca Cola; Laurie Holman, Presidio; Ft. Stockton Wal-Mart; El Paso Water Utilities; Skinner Well Service; Mr. A.G. Hays; and the hard working staff of the SBWSC.
Again, to each and all our sincerest thank you.
Sam Bottenfield, President, SBWSC

The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

Wylie Rain Catchment tanks - the Gold Standard. We aim to have the order filled and turned in by the end of July. Contact us at elcentro432@gmail, (512) 924-2506 or (432) 371-2506.  Our answering machine is worn out; we have a new one on order.  If you don't call back, please contact via email or the cell number.

Terlingua Recycles could surely use a few more volunteers, especially as our core group is away for the summer months. This past week we turned in one of our largest loads ever which is great in that folks - residents and visitors - are recycling and helping to minimize our footprint on this planet. We still need your help with the recycling process (even if you can't volunteer time to help with the processing.
Some are new to recycling (thank you!) and some have been doing so for some time. A few things to note - all items that we accept are clearly marked on the sign in front of the recycling bins (located just behind the Terlingua EMS station).
No matter what you recycle, please be sure it's clean. Human beings have to sort through all items as we parse out the recyclables at the recycling station in BBNP.
Plastic: Bubble wrap is not an acceptable item. Plastic hair brushes and tent stakes are not acceptable plastic. (Think about it). Please rinse milk and other plastic containers and smash them as well as possible before placing in bins.
Cardboard: Please break down boxes as best you can. Tossing into boxes a) take-up a considerable amount of space and causes the volunteers to have to break down the boxes.
Aluminum: Again, clean aluminum. Not crumpled up aluminum foil with the remnants of last night's barbecue. Ditto no window frames or metal tent stakes.
NO BATTERIES OR CAUSTIC MATERIALS. EVER. PERIOD.
Please use common sense when the bins are full. There is a not-to-exceed line marked on each bin. If you exceed those levels it creates a lot of extra work. If a bin is full, please take your items home and store for a few days. Right now, we are making special runs to keep with the overflow and "catch-up" from heavy use. If bins are overflowing, trust us, we're aware. One of our few volunteers goes by there every day.
Local establishments, especially bars and restaurants. We're glad you're recycling too! Please realize that you are among the largest contributors to the recyclable items left at the center. Please try to coordinate with your staff and rotate a volunteer from time to time. Establishment owners are more than welcome, too! We want to facilitate recycling as much as possible but this is a community effort.
All of this really boils down to common sense and not abusing the program - lending a hand when you can. Many hands make light work.
We all recycle because we feel it is important. Let's work together and keep south Brewster clean and green. If you can spare a little (or lot of) time to volunteer, whether at the recycling center behind the EMS in between runs to BBNP or during the runs into the park, send us a FB message for more info.
Thank You!
