On Tuesday Nov. 25, the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend will be hosting a free community Thanksgiving lunch in the Terlingua Ghostown from 12:15 to 2:30 pm. Also at the FCCBB, on Nov. 25, the Texas Department of State Health Services will be offering flu immunizations from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, free for uninsured/underinsured and Medicaid recipients.
Everyone is Welcome to the Annual Cowhead Ranch Thanksgiving Feast. Thanksgiving Day. We'll have turkey and ham. Bring a dish if possible. Bring your dog and guitar. Time? Noonish to whenever. Remembering Cowboy Chris and his sharing traditions!
Chili Pepper Thanksgiving. Lupe and the staff would like to invite everyone to join us again this Thursday to share in a Thanksgiving meal. We will be serving turkey, ham and all the trimmings along with dessert, coffee and tea from 11:00 a.m. until the food is gone. $12.95 for adults and $8.95 for children. It's Thanksgiving Week and that means non-stop Big Screen football plus a Thanksgiving Day special of Turkey with all the trimmings for $13.95. Just a reminder that we are almost sold out of rooms for the holidays. Sold out for New Years and only a few remaining for other dates so have your friends and family call us ASAP if they need reservations. We're also already booked for a few holiday parties so keep us in mind on that front, too.

The Boathouse would like to thank everyone for their support and patronage since reopening last month. We will be open 4 p.m. - Midnight, seven days a week. The grill is open Tuesday through Sunday from 5 - 9 p.m.
We will be open on Thanksgiving Day and will be debuting a turkey stew/ ragout with a toasted cornbread/ stuffing crouton crumble. Our regular menu will also be available in addition to a Burger Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy or Macaroni and Cheese. Both items will include a dinner salad.

The final numbers for the Green Scene fund raiser for the Community Garden are in. The Green Scene netted $4859.49 plus a one-time donation of $1851.94 for a total of $6711.43. Thanks to everyone involved - volunteers and participants. This money allowed us to finish the water catchment project off of the Starlight roof, plus some other projects for the garden.

Join the Sul Ross Conservation Biology Club for a viewing of the BBC Natural World documentary, The Bat Man of Mexico! This 1hr documentary narrated by David Attenborough, tells the story of Rodrigo Medellin, president of the Society for Conservation Biology, and Mexican ecologist and academic known for his work in the field of bat conservation. The Bat Man of Mexico- Since he first kept vampire bats in his bathroom as a child, Rodrigo has dedicated his life to saving them. Now Mexico's most famous export, tequila, is at stake. Rodrigo's beloved lesser long-nosed bat is crucial to the liquor - pollinating the plants the drink is made from. To save both, Rodrigo must track the bats' epic migration across Mexico - braving hurricanes, snakes, Mayan tombs and seas of cockroaches. The threats are very real for not only Rodrigo and the bats, but also for anyone with a taste for tequila! This viewing is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Ominous Reason Voter Turnout was so Low
On a warm October night toward the end of the 2014 campaign, almost every politician running for a major office here in the swing state of Colorado appeared at a candidate forum in southeast Denver. The topics discussed were pressing: a potential war with ISIS, voting rights, a still-struggling economy. But one key element was in conspicuously short supply: the media.
This was increasingly the reality in much of the country, as campaigns played out in communities where the local press corps has been thinned by layoffs and newspaper closures. What if you held an election and nobody showed up to cover it? Americans have now discovered the answer: You get an election with lots of paid ads, but with little journalism, context or objective facts.
Between 2003 and 2012, the newspaper workforce decreased by 30 percent nationally, according to the American Society of Newspaper Editors. That has included a major reduction in the number of newspaper reporters assigned to cover state and local
politics. Newspaper layoffs have ripple effects for the entire local news ecosystem, because, as the Congressional Research Service noted, television, radio and online outlets often “piggyback on reporting done by much larger newspaper staffs.” Meanwhile, recent studies from the University of Chicago and the Federal Reserve Bank suggest the closure of newspapers can ultimately depress voter turnout in local elections. Bill Gilles, an honored 37-year veteran and resident of Study Butte, is our next guest artist at Earth and Fire in the Terlingua Ghost Town over the Thanksgiving holidays. Bill is a creative artist using multi media, recycled metal pieces and featuring leatherwork (medicine bags, purses, bracelets), as well as lapidary work. Join us for wine and refreshments as we welcome Bill’s work on Monday, Nov. 24, 4-7pm. His show will run everyday from the 24th through Dec. 2nd. Bill Ivey featured at Nov. 28 Travel Talk
Alpine Public Library’s Travel Talk for November will feature Bill Ivey, who will talk about “Sailing on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast in a “gulet.” A gulet is a traditional Turkish sailing vessel, adapted to take tourists. The talk is on Friday November 28, at 7 pm in the library’s AEP multipurpose room. For more information, call 837-2621.
