BIG BEND CITIZENS ALLIANCE ‑‑ The Big Bend Citizens Alliance will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, October 26th at the Red Pattillo Community Center at 6 p.m.  The BBCA is a 501(c)3 public charity supporting the Terlingua Community Garden, Canyon View Community Park (Ball Field), Terlingua Recycles, Voices from Both Sides, Terlingua Visual Arts, Terlingua Dark Sky Alliance, Terlingua Cares, and the South County Library Project.  All are welcome to attend this public meeting -- either in person or online via Zoom.  For more information, agenda, minutes, etc., please email  secretary.bbca@gmail.com or text Sara at 244-7656 with your questions.  Big Bend Citizens Alliance

CRIBBAGE/HORSESHOE TOURNAMENT & BBQ ‑‑ Ken & Joee May Barnes Scholarship   The annual event will be Saturday, November 11^th, at the horseshoe pits in the Ghostown.  Horseshoe & Cribbage Tournaments start at 9:30 a.m. (arrive by 9:20 to sign up, please).  BBQ Plates will be served around noon until sold out.  We are going to try something a little different this year with a Silent Auction from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Winners will be announced following the tournaments.  All proceeds benefit Terlingua School Graduates.  A celebration of life for Catfish will follow at the Boathouse, 6 p.m.  Taylor & Justin chose this date, so our events would coincide.  It's going to be a full day of remembrance for those we love.

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN ‑‑ spooky season that is and we are hosting the second annual haunted house in the Ghostown.  Everyone is welcome!  Proceeds will go to the Crisis Center.  We can't wait to see you there.

Time to dust off and/or create your costumes and get ready for the 2nd Annual Haunted House, Thursday, October 26th, Friday, October 27th and Saturday October 28th.  There will be a $10.00 cover charge and you will have to sign a release form before entering.  Doors open at 7:00 pm.  This year’s addition is a pumpkin carving contest, so go grab your pumpkin, sharpen you knives and get to carving.  There will be 3 categories to be judged on:  Scariest, Most Creative and Funniest.  Bring your carved pumpkin to the haunted house and we will set them up.  You will need to put your name and contact info on the bottom of your pumpkin so we can contact you if you win.  There will be prizes.  Judging will be announced on FaceBook on October 30th and in the Terlingua Moon on Tuesday, October 31.  All proceeds this year will go for a scholarship to TCSD and also to our Crisis Center.  Our goal this year is $2,000.00.  Last year we raised $1,830, we have faith this year will be better.  Looking forward to seeing ya'll.

 

DIA de LOS MUERTOS ‑‑ There will be a very talented group of local female painters getting together in the Ghostown to bring Dia de Los Muertos face painting to life this year.  Message me to sign up for a time slot before 4 p.m.  Everything after 4 will be first come, first serve in person.  This is donation based with suggestions of full face @ $30 (about 1 hour) and half face @ $15 (about 30 mins).  November 2.  Molly Finnerty

BOQUILLAS CROSSING BEGINS WINTER SCHEDULE ‑‑ The Boquillas Port of Entry within Big Bend National Park, providing access to the town of Boquillas, Coahuila, Mexico, will change to the winter schedule beginning Thursday, November 2.  The crossing will be open five days a week, Wednesday through Sunday.  To view the full news release, please visit the Big Bend National Park news release page:  News Releases - Big Bend National Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov).

MILKY WAY TREATS ‑‑ The Milky Way Treats Saturday morning bakery cart is open every Saturday, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.  We’re located in the Ghostown next to the Community Garden.  Our ice cream trailer is open Sat., Sun., and Mon., 4 p.m.-9 p.m., right next to The Boathouse.  Stop by soon and treat yourself!!  Gracias, Terlingua!

Fresh eggs, local art, handcrafted textiles, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms, hand balms, essential oil perfumes and sugar scrubs, leather goods, handcrafted, creative jewelry, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and up-cycled, and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here.  Indeed, lately, chess players have been meeting up for a game or two or three or....  Sandy's back for the season to open her super cute pop-up shop on Saturdays and so is Valerie with her fine selection of culinary treats.

In-person early voting, as this begins throughout Texas next Monday (October 23) and runs through Friday, November 3 on 14 state constitutional amendments as well as on municipal races and bond packages in some cities and counties! Check your county’s elections administration website for complete voting information in your area!

TERLINGUA MUSIC BASH
Al Barlow and Garth Angleton from New Braunfels started the "never for profit" Music Bash in the 1990's and each October musicians from the Central Texas area come to spend the 3rd weekend playing music with local Terlingua musicians. It has resulted in decades long friendships and countless amazing song circles. It's not a huge thing, it's just a nice thing. Hope you'll be in town during the week of October 19th-22nd and be looking to meet up with some old/new friends.

Some of the musicians visiting have booked shows in area venues, check local club's listings. Traditions that will happen include a meet and greet/open mic on the patio at Alex and Marti Whitmore's place at 1 Franklin Circle, this year it will be at 6:00 p.m. Friday Oct. 20th. Bring a snack to share if you can!

Then Saturday morning at 10 a.m. we will begin to gather on the porch in front of The Starlight for a walking/playing/singing parade to The Boathouse for the annual costume contest at 11:30 a.m.. The theme this year is Steampunk. We really hope for local participation. Please come out and make it a costume party! It'll be a sight to see.

This coming Saturday, we gather in the desert for a sweet time of remembrance with friends old and new.  From noon till close, Boathouse Bar & Bungalows will be celebrating the life of Mark Kneeskern and raising scholarship money for Terlingua CSD. With a silent auction, Art show and music from noon till close… it’s going to be a big time.  Doors open at noon with music by Blind Squirrel, followed by Sierra Turcot & Todd Elrod, Nani Byrd with Shannon & Chris Seaton, John Whipple & Butch Morgan, Rory Hancock & Roger Moon, Sarah Burton, Kelli King & the Tin Cup Trio Review, The Lucky Stars, and Zander Burns & the Mesquite Beans!

All Proceeds go towards the funding of the Mark “EyEBall” Kneeskern Memorial Scholarship.

Bacon Avocado Burgers, Club Sandwiches, Enchiladas, and Fajitas are just some of the tasty plates being served. Just a heads up for regular customers, over the next few weeks the bar and grill will be closed on Wednesdays. EXTRA TERLINGUA MOON!!!! - Special announcement about our water system

STUDY BUTTE WATER SUPPLY CORPORATION NOTIFICATIONS: October 9, 2023 We are attempting to prevent a catastrophic failure of the water system. If you are not in dire need of water, we are asking for you to voluntarily shut off your meters for the next 24 hours. If the system does run out of water it will take 48 hours to fill the tanks to operating level. We are now on a boil notice as we are bypassing our RO system in an attempt to prevent the tanks going dry. This situation has been caused by the recent failure of Well #2 and the delay in repairs to the well; in addition to recent power outages and the increase in usage from the holiday weekend it is not caused by the level of the aquifer. Please do not panic and hoard water, as this would speed up the potential failure of the system. Please contact the SBWSC office if you have questions about this situation. Please share with your neighbors, we must all do what we can to avoid more down time. Steps are already in motion to avoid this situation in the future.

Funky Junk update!
Once again Shannon Carter, with the help of Cabin 10, Inc. is hosting Funky Junk in Terlingua Ghostown, and we’d like you to come out to the desert to join the fun and help the cause. You might ask “what the funk”? Well, it’s our annual celebration of the EyEball Renaissance, the creative time when Mark “EyEball” Kneeskern roamed Terlingua turning Junk into Art… Funky Junk!

October is an ideal time to come enjoy the desert as we transition into cooler temperatures.

This year, Greg Hammer will open the Boathouse doors to Funky Junk where we’ll feature the Funky Junk Art Show and a silent auction. We’ll have live music from Noon – close,  the schedule is listed below. Costumes are encouraged, with a prize piece of Funky Junk art awarded for the best costume.

How about that cool T-Shirt featuring an Eyeball original?  A limited number of these T-Shirts will be available for sale the day of at the Boathouse, or better yet… make sure to get your size by ordering one online at cabin10.org, and have it sent directly to you.  Also, we are seeking items/services from the community for our silent auction. This week we want to boast about the generosity of our community.  A large portion of the funding of the Mark “EyEBall” Kneeskern Memorial Scholarship at Terlingua CSD comes from our Silent Auction.  We’ve put the word out that we are garnering donations and boy howdy, did y’all come through.  We hope y’all show up to snag each other’s stuff, cause that’s kinda how it’s shaking out. We’ve got music lessons, recording sessions, lodging packages, meals at your favorite restaurants, an Architectural design package, swag items from local performers, artwork, photography, sculptures, house concerts, outdoor adventure and sports, massage packages, a bike tune-up, etc.  We’ve even garnered items from outside of our immediate community.  Good folks just seem to recognize a good cause and want to help. So now it’s up to you to come to the Boathouse, Saturday (Oct. 21) and grab some bargains. The doors open at noon with great local and out of town musical performances until closing. This gives you plenty of time to come by and hang out, or just drop by and take part in the silent auction.  The Auction will close at 9pm, and you don’t have to be present to win your item.  We’ll contact you if you have the winning bid. Texas A&M Extension have made kits available for FREE well testing for residents of South Brewster County.

For all of you visitors to the Terlingua area Facebook pages, there is concern about the national park being closed. As iconic as Big Bend National Park is, it barely scratches the surface of what is available in the region in terms of history, geology, scenery, and activities.Big Bend Ranch State Park, the Christmas Mountains Preserve, Davis Mountains State Park, the McDonald Observatory, the River Road, Terlingua Ranch, dozens of museums, galleries, restaurants, live music virtually every night, it would take months to see everything that is NOT in the park.

 

If your reservations at the Chisos Mountains Lodge are cancelled, or you have other lodging arrangements and are worried about what to do, come to Terlingua anyway. The Terlingua Ranch Lodge and many other options are available for you next month.

KEN & JOEE MAY BARNES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER - The annual event will be Saturday, November 11th at the horseshoe pits in the Ghostown. Horseshoe & Cribbage Tournaments start at 9:30am (arrive by 9:20 to sign up, please).  BBQ Plates will be served around noon until sold out.  Auction to follow the tournaments.  All proceeds benefit Terlingua School Graduates.  Celebration of life for Catfish to follow at the Boathouse, 6pm. Taylor & Justin chose this date, so our events would coincide.  It's going to be a full day of remembrance for those we love.

This past year’s recipient was Melenie Orozco who has started studies at Sul Ross University.   So … plan to join the fun and help the cause! Hi All,

We had a good meeting with BBAC members concerning the upcoming 2024 Show year and went over our outdated but now recently updated Show Curator duties.

Carol Fairlie is our Show Coordinator and will be the point person for questions about curating shows.  She has a great background in curating all sorts of shows and will be a great resource for those wanting to head up a show but needing some guidance.

I hope that some of our local artists may want to help out with organizing and hanging shows...starting out as a co-curator is a good way to get experience!

I am attaching minutes of the September meeting which also has the 2024 proposed show schedule at the end of the minutes.  Also am attaching the updated Show Curator Guidelines.

I'll be sending out the October schedule for Art Events soon.  If you know of events that you would like to have included, please let me know.

SECULAR AA AT THE CRISIS CENTER in The Ghost Town.

It matters not what your faith is – It matters that you have faith in yourself. Meetings open to all who have the desire to make a change. Today, fully one-third of Americans under the age of 30 identify as atheist, agnostic, or no religion. They walk into a meeting, see the word God on the wall, and walk out. But AA is for them, if they have a desire to stop drinking. We emphasize that AA is a fellowship, not a strict set of beliefs. We are similar to other special purpose groups in AA, such as gay/lesbian or young people’s meetings. At our meetings, no one is forced to join in or conspicuously opt out of a prayer. We believe in “To Thine Own Self Be True,” as quoted on many AA medallions. Alot of us continue to attend traditional AA meetings as well.

BASECAMP TERLINGUA

We are pleased to announce that we have completed the donation of approx. 3 acres by the baseball field at Big Bend High School in Terlingua to the Big Bend Citizens Alliance (BBCA) for the construction of a new library. Was nice working with the good folks at BBCA to secure this first step in the journey to a much-needed library. Special thanks to @marcos.paredes.376 who planted this seed over two years ago with us. TRI-COUNTY VOTER PROMOTERS VOTER REGISTRATION EVENTS continue this week on Tuesday and Thursday at Porter’s Grocery in Alpine and Morgan University Center at Sul Ross in Alpine. On Friday, we will be at the Marfa Post Office in Marfa.

 

The following week, we will be at the Terlingua Post Office in Terlingua on Monday, October 9, and then back in Alpine on Tuesday, October 10, the final day to register to vote for the November 7 constitutional amendments election.

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY REAFFIRMS OPPOSITION TO SCHOOL VOUCHERS

In October, Governor Abbott will once again ramp up his efforts to force private school vouchers on Texans at the expense of public schools. Along with Raise Your Hand Texas, Texans for Public Education, the Texas State Teachers Association, Pastors for Texas Children, the Brewster County Democratic Party, the Texas Democratic Party, and many other organizations, we will strongly oppose the Governor’s attempts to push this legislation through another special session despite bipartisan opposition.

 

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY REAFFIRMING THE TEXAS DEMOCRATIC PARTY PLATFORM POSITION OPPOSING ANY REPUBLICAN SCHOOL VOUCHER SCHEME

 WHEREAS the Texas Constitution states, in Article 8 - Section 1, that “A general diffusion of knowledge being essential to the preservation of the liberties and rights of the people.”

 

WHEREAS since 1876, the Texas Constitution states, in Article 8 - Section 1, that “it shall be the duty of the Legislature of the State to establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools.

 

WHEREAS since 1876, the Texas Constitution has, through Article 8 - Section 3, commanded the Texas Legislature to collect taxes from the public in order to fund free public education, textbooks, and maintaining public school buildings.

 

WHEREAS Texas schools rank in the bottom three states nationwide for per student funding.

 

WHEREAS because the Texas public school system’s funding is determined per enrolled pupil, and public school funding follows each individual student on their educational journey.

 

WHEREAS Texas schools need an additional $1000 per student just to keep up with annual inflation.

WHEREAS the funding deficit for Texas schools is so severe that even disregarding inflation, Texas would still be $3,000 below the national funding average in per student funding.

 

WHEREAS because funding is determined by enrolled students, a voucher system would directly reduce public school funding with each departing student.

 

WHEREAS special education students are the most underfunded population, with districts spending $2 billion more annually than the state allocates for this population despite the fact that Texas is under federal oversight for violating the rights of these students.

 

WHEREAS a special education voucher would hurt our most vulnerable students, as they would lose all of their federal rights and protections by attending a private school.

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Executive Committee of the Jeff Davis County Democratic Party fiercely opposes any Republican school voucher scheme proposed in the Texas Legislature, during the 88th Legislature, and will take action against Republican voucher proposals.
