Vol.33   No. 21

From May 2015  “Fiesta Protesta!  What a grand time we all had last Saturday at Voices From Both Sides!

""OMG, what a great community I live in. While most of the world is worried about securing their borders, we are trying to go back to the open borders that we had prior to 9/11. Our project, Voices From Both Sides-FB,.com, started a little over 3 years ago. An idea that music and art could possibly open our border or at least change the way that we are allowed to communicate with each other as folks who live on both sides of the Rio Grande which the Mexicans call Rio Bravo. The Fiesta Protesta started as a way for us to get together and show the world that (at that time) 11 years was long enough to be divided. We share music & food & splash in the water and have fun. We pray for the future, we long for the past. 3 years into it and this past May 9 was the biggest & best one yet. I wrote the song Fiesta Protesta 3 weeks prior to the event on a trip to Mexico. I hope you enjoy the song. As you listen please consider that only the dead fish follow the stream.

We are all connected.”         `Jeff Haislip

If you'd like to volunteer to help out, that'd be much appreciated! Many hands make light work                                Sara Allen Colando, Brewster County Commissioner Pct 2

Bird Photo ‑‑ Green-tailed Towhee.  Many common bird names are very distinctive and easy to understand.  Think, Yellow-headed Blackbird or Painted Bunting, for example.  The Green-tailed Towhee, on the other hand, isn’t exactly what I think of as fitting.  Green in a bird is a female Painted Bunting or a Parrot.

In addition to the common names, all birds also have scientific names.  New research and methods of identifying species often lead ornithologists to reclassify birds and change their scientific names.  However, ornithologists also change common names of birds, making bird identification guides outdated and in need of replacement.  Could it be that it is time to start a campaign to rename our little Green-tailed Towhee friend?  And if so, could it become an Olive-tailed Towhee or maybe even a Red-capped Towhee?  Remember you first saw it in the Moon.  Happy birding!!
