Terlingua and Study Butte residents and businesses continue to be without water today.  The transfer of water to the Bee Mtn tank is complete for today with over 71,000 gallons transported by Big Bend National Park and Terlingua Fire and Emergency Services tankers.  The SBWSC system will be slowly pressurized this evening to provide water to our customers.  If water pressure and demand allow, the system should provide water tonight and most of tomorrow.  We are asking customers to be very conservative in their water use.  A Level 4 Water Conservation Emergency is still in effect.  This means water may be used for normal household use while watering lawns, gardens, washing vehicles is prohibited. Tankers will continue to transport water through the emergency to insure demand is met.  Conserving water use will help to keep our system running.      

County, local officials, and good neighbors are working to ensure drinking water is available to local water customers.  Water is available at the SBWSC plant during normal business hours and is subject to the Boil Water Notice (see www.studybuttewater.com).  Drinking water has been donated by the Red Cross, West Texas Food Bank, Big Bend Hospital District,  Big Bend Brewery, Family Crisis Center and others and remains available to those in need at the Terlingua EMS building from 10am to 2pm.  

The new motor for Well #1 is expected to be arrive on Thursday, June29 with hopes of installation, testing, and production to be completed by Saturday, July 1.

As of noon today we have moved over 71000 gallons of water to the Bee Mtn storage tank.  At 6:30 this evening we plan on slowly pressuring the system and provide water to our customers.  Customers should be aware that the water is still under the boil water notice and can expect air in the lines as the pressure builds.  The water may be cloudy, brown, rust, or bubbly and can be used for washing and flushing.  We also remind everyone that the Level 4 Water Conservation Requirements are still in effect...please be very conservative with your water use.

While we will try to provide water continuously we should be aware that if we are unable to maintain pressure or water volume we will need to limit the hours of operation.

The Workers...
Today crews from BBNP and Terlingua Fire and EMS and Brewster County Sheriffs Office and volunteers continue to transfer water to the Bee Mtn. storage tank. We hope to bring the tank level to 70,000 gallons or more by 1 pm today. If you see them thank them for their efforts in getting the system back on line.
The Plan...
The operations plan calls for the system to be slowly pressurized by 6:30 pm today in hopes of providing water through the evening and tomorrow. We are turning on the water slowly so it does not blow out valves or connectors. Expect your tap to blow air as the pressure builds. Your water may be discolored and have air bubbles - remember a boil water notice is still in effect for your drinking water. The length of service will depend on usage, demand and storage volume. We ask that all users be very conservative in their water usage...the less we use the longer it stays on...
The Friends...
There has been an outpouring of support from our neighbors. Thanks to Brewster County Sheriffs Office, Brewster County Judge and Commissioners, Terlingua Fire and EMS, Big Bend National Park, Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend,West Texas Food Bank, Big Bend Regional Hospital District, Lajitas On The Rio Grande, Congressman Will Hurd, USDA, Big Bend Resorts and Adventures, the Red Cross...plus 100s of volunteers. I am sure that there are others that I have left off with apologies...let me know and I'll add to the list.
The Community...
Strong people with few complaints and lots of interest and support. Glad to be part of it...



Water operations will continue today with transferring water this morning to the Bee Mtn. tank. About 50,000 gallons were tansferred yesterday and another 20,000 will be moved this morning. Commissioner Ortega is hoping to deliver 40,000 by truck as well as find a well pump for the system while we await the new motor.
Once water transfer has been completed, the system will be slowly pressurized in an effort to provide some water to our customers. We will do our best to keep you informed of the progress.
Local neighboring communities continue to help with drinking water deliveries.
We appreciate the community outreach and the patience and understanding of everyone while we deal with this crisis.

Just a reminder that bottled water is available at the TFEMS station for those who need it.

Also, Terlingua Ranch has advised us that they would like to remind everyone that 25 gallons of potable water per week is available to all property owner households. They also have potable water (up to 50 gallons per day) and non-potable water (up to 500 gallons per day) available for purchase at the Terlingua Ranch office. And, don't forget - they also have public showers available.

Our community has rallied with this crisis and our neighbors have responded with support.  Those needing drinking water can pick up bottled water  at the Terlingua ESB generally from 10 to 2 daily.  The staff at the ESB are handing out and managing the water.  Water donations have come from the Red Cross, West Texas Food Bank,  Congressman Will Hurds office,  Big Bend Brewery in Alpine, and Laurie Holman is bringing water from Presidio.  Big Bend Resort and Adventures is offering water, laundry, and showers to needy residents - just check at the front desk.

With luck we may be producing water sooner than we think.

The board and staff of the SBWSC thank everyone for their support and we appreciate the patience and understanding of everyone without water.

The American Red Cross will be at the South County Emergency Response Center today(Wednesday) afternoon, to distribute drinking water to South County residents. Persons are asked to bring a copy of their water bill to insure that the water is distributed to those in need.
Also, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, of El Paso, will be running water trucks to help keep the tanks full.
Please remember to limit water use until this problem is remedied....
As always, if you have any emergency, call 911.

UPDATE 6/21: Water will be available, at no charge, at the Big Bend Motor Inn, for anyone needing to fill small jugs of drinking water.
Water is available for pickup by SBWSC members at the South County Emergency Services Building. Please bring a copy of your water bill with you. And Please share this to people who may need to know.

There is a boil water notice in effect. See more at the end of this MOON.

Terlingua Recycles
Terlingua has a recycling station just behind Terlingua EMS. We collect cardboard, tin, aluminum, and plastic. A few helpful reminders: make sure your tin/ aluminum/ plastic containers are clean. Please crush your plastic cartons as much as possible - makes room for more in the bin.  The cardboard bin is very full right now. If you could hold off until we make a run at the end of the month, it would be much appreciated.Volunteers are always welcome, especially the last Thursday of the month when we make our run into the main recycling center in Big Bend National Park. Bebe is a purebred red Chihuahua who weighs 5 pounds. Previously, she had one eye removed. We don't know the story on that but having only one eye doesn't seem to slow her down one teeny tiny bit. Bebe wants to be your shadow, sit in your lap, and snuggle. When held, she wags her little tail against your tummy... She's delighted by attention and gives gentle kisses. The Terlingua Common School District will hold a public meeting at 6:00 PM on June 28, 2017 in the Big Bend High School Meeting Room, Terlingua, Texas. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the school district's budget that will determine the tax rate that will be adopted. Public participation in the discussion is invited.

ATTENTION SOUTH BREWSTER COUNTY RESIDENTS: A water pump on the Study Butte/ Terlingua public water supply is inoperable, possibly due to a lightning strike. Sheriff Dodson, Judge Cano, Commissioner Garrett, and Fire Chief Henington are working to fix the issue. It could take as long as two weeks to resolve the problem. Residents are urged to limit water use during this time.

BOIL WATER NOTIFICATION

Due to a loss of pressure on the lines, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has required our water system, PWS ID 0220035, to notify all customers to boil their water prior to consumption.
To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to consumption. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from another suitable source.
Our system has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore adequate pressure, disinfectant levels, and/or bacteriological quality.
When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, water system officials will notify you that the water is safe for consumption. Instructions to discontinue boiling will be issued in the same manner as this notice.

The Garage in Ft. Stockton and The Back Room in Alpine are connecting the art culture gap between the two cities. Local artists along with visiting artists will be showing exclusive interpretations of “SPACE” art. From outer space to personal space. Space is a limitless concept. All art is open for viewing at 4 PM on June 17th at The Garage, 1110 N. Main Street, Ft. Stockton, TX. What a better way to celebrate Father’s Day with a family event that has art and music?  The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

 Alpine Animal Shelter. Dually is a 2-1/2 yr old Lab/Pit mix. He is very engaging and people-centered, and he’s a champ at playing with other dogs, too. Dually loves playgroup, knows a load of commands (like shake and sit), always comes running when called, and really appreciates a good petting session. Brewster County has accepted a $500,000 donation from Trans-Pecos Pipeline, LLC for First Responder Initiatives. The funds are earmarked to purchase emergency response vehicles, equipment and cameras, and to finish the build out of the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department.
The new emergency response vehicles will be outfitted to serve as first response mobile units. New equipment will primarily consist of firefighter gear and apparatus specifically needed to safely secure hazards or fight fires. Additionally, the donation from the Trans-Pecos Pipeline will be used to purchase and install security cameras along the pipeline corridor to enable our Sheriff’s Office to monitor pipeline activity locally 24/7. This is in addition to the pipeline’s 24/7 remote monitoring and safety systems.

The last, thinnest sliver of the waning moon has passed several days ago, as have two of the most remarkable of our community family. Farewell to the unique character that was and is  Doc Doug Blackmon, and to our beloved and brilliant Cynthia Hood. 
Both memorials were well attended with love.

A final waning crescent is sometimes called the Crying Moon – a time symbolizing release of negatively, pain, hate, and a time to forgive and let go.  So fitting the paths both of these followed in life.  May they rest peacefully now.

Big Bend National Parks Rio Grande Village campground is to be closed from May 30th - September 1st. This closure is for the installation/replacement of a water tank and wastewater lagoon liners. Overflow camping during the process is being directed to the Terlingua/ Study Butte area, and to Stillwell's Ranch and RV Park.

The Frickers are, residents of Terlingua in Brewster County, Texas.  Highway litter on the 'Concerned Citizens Highway 170', road area just west of
Terlingua, Texas was picked up over 24 times during the month of MAY 2017.

Help Keep Terlingua Green
We typically take Terlingua's recycling bins into BBNP's recycling center the last Thursday of the month, leaving Terlingua around 8 and back around 1. Caravan with us in your own car or ride along with one of the other volunteers. If you can't make that but have a few minutes in your week to stop by the recycling center to help tidy up, that's great too. Lola is a beautiful and good-natured pit bull terrier mix (australian shepherd, maybe?) with a merle coat and one blue eye. She is 7 years young and was surrendered to the shelter on 5/23 because her owner could not keep her. She is a friendly girl who can’t wait to be back in a loving home. Keep Terlingua Green Hey friends - there are all kinds of ways to help keep Terlingua Green and we need your help! There are more and more beer cans, bottles, and general trash thrown along our roads of late; won't you take 5 minute wherever you're headed to pick it up and dispose of it properly? Keep a bag or box or bucket in your car and help keep the area clean? Much of what's "trashing" our beautiful Big Bend is also harmful to birds and other creatures (six-pack rings are especially harmful). Really, if most folks took even 5 minutes once a week to help clean up the area along their routes, it would make such a difference.

While you're at it, don't forget to recycle! Terlingua has a great recycling center located just behind the EMS station. There are separate bins for tin, aluminum, paper, cardboard, etc. and we're closer than ever to being able to handle glass. A few pointers that make the volunteers' lives a lot easier: take the tops off milk and similar cartons and step on them to compact them somewhat; make sure cans and other containers are clean; we can't accept the plastic grocery/ retail store bags so please don't toss them in with your recyclable plastic; finally - no styrofoam.
