This Friday, May 30, 2025, as part of the Big Bend High School Graduation, the 10th Annual Mark Kneeskern Memorial Scholarship will be awarded.  Mark ("eYeBall") was a beloved member of the Terlingua community and was an artist, musician, writer, lover of adventure and the town and children of Terlingua. When he died unexpectedly in 2014, his partner, Shannon Carter Seaton, created the scholarship to fund art projects for children in the Big Bend. Soon after, Crystal Allbright began coordinating those efforts and several years back, Cabin 10 (a 501(c)(3)) began awarding the scholarship to a graduating senior of Big Bend High School. The primary fundraiser for the scholarship is the Terlingua Music Bash which happens each October.

The graduation ceremony is at 7:00 pm Friday, on May 30th in the school gymnasium and while the awarding of the scholarship is just a part of the overall graduation ceremony, we wanted to be sure that Mark's friends near and far know the tradition continues.  If you want any more information about the scholarship, please go to https://cabin10.org/scholarships. We would be grateful for any donations for this year's silent auction. You can email cabin10org@gmail.com

Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00.

Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items. You'll also be able to enjoy our fabulous local mobile library from 10:00-3:00.

This week is the last Saturday of May, so we're waiving our usual $10 set up donation. It's a great day for new vendors to try out our market. We welcome local art, handcrafted goods, flea market items, creatively upcycled offerings and more. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Local art, handcrafted textile goods, fresh eggs, all natural lip balms and skin care products, essential oil perfumes, handcrafted, creative jewelry, resin creations, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here.

We welcome new vendors. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.

We'll be here all summer, in the shade. This year, we're celebrating the summer season by waiving the set up donation on the last Saturday of each of our summer months. It's a great way for a creator or new vendor to try out our market. We typically have a table and chair or two to loan to new vendors.

For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com or pop in to the market for a chat.

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

Earth and Fire Gallery in the Ghostown of Terlingua, Texas is a most magical space. Nestled into a stacked rock structure located between the Starlight Theater and Y Poco Mas Coffee Shop, this unique space is home to artists who capture and share the essence of what both sides of the Big Bend are all about. Featuring mixed media, pointilism, photography, metal work, pottery and more - by local artists - you will find exactly the piece you want to take home with you. Constantly changing, repeat visits are a must! And this month we are featuring Tony Drewry and his magical camera.

      Terlingua MoonπŸŒ™

Volume 36, No. 19
May 13, 2025 by Blue Grama

"We are all bound by a covenant of reciprocity: plant breath for animal breath, winter and summer, predator and prey, grass and fire, night and day, living and dying. Water knows this, clouds know this. Soil and rocks know they are dancing in a continuous giveaway of making, unmaking, and making again the earth."

"Give thanks for what you have been given. Give a gift, in reciprocity for what you have taken. Sustain the ones who sustain you and the earth will last forever."

-Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass

The Night Sky this month:

πŸŒ• 5/12   Full Flower Moon🌸

πŸŒ— 5/20  Last Quarter

πŸŒ‘ 5/26  New Moon

May’s Flower Moon name should be no surprise; flowers spring forth across North America in abundance this month! “Flower Moon” has been attributed to Algonquin peoples, as confirmed by Christina Ruddy of The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre in Pikwakanagan, Ontario. (Old Farmer's Almanac)

4/19 - 5/28  Eta Aquariids meteor shower: Begins around 4/19 and ends by 5/28, peaking 5/8 and tapering toward the start and end dates. The meteors we see as members of the Eta Aquariid shower are debris that separated from Halley's Comet. Face South towards Aquarius pre-dawn to catch the Aquariids meteors before they are through!

5/17  Corona Borealis: A pretty semicircle of stars crowns the sky on spring and summer nights: Corona Borealis, the northern crown. It is in the east as night falls now, and passes high overhead a few hours later. In a couple of months, it will be overhead at nightfall. (McDonald Observatory)

Protect our dark skies! Turn out the lights at night, use warm colored, downfacing or shielded lights.

CONGRATULATIONS to team 11720 - Purobots!!
They traveled to Corpus Christ last weekend and played against 23 of the best robots in the state of Texas in the 1A-4A division. They won 3 of 5 matches in the qualifying matches and played 2 matches in the playoffs. They ended the day in 10th place of 24. We're very proud of Brook, Luna, Evan, David, Brayan, Asa, Desiree, Melody, Usiel, Bailey, Phillip, Ervey and Adriel!

Hello Terlingua
The Crisis Center will be extending food distribution thru Wednesday May 14th.  We still have lots of stuff to give out: Meat, Vegetables, the pantry box and lots of bread.  We had a very low turn out today (5/9), due to rain and other factors.  Please be sure to bring an ID and your address to obtain new scanner cards.  You will be required to use the scanner card to get your box beginning in June.  Your address needs to be used only by your household. So, if you are sharing addresses due to living in RV Park or other type areas, you must be able to designate your house by a letter or number. EXAMPLE: 106 Hoppy Lane Lot 6.

Thank You, Deb

CAMELS in Ft. Davis!!!

SAVE THE DATE...The camels are coming, the camels are coming...Wednesday and Thursday, May 14-15 there will be living history presentations featuring Doug Baum and his camels at Fort Davis National Historic Site. Did you know that there were, in fact, camels at the Fort in the 1850s?  Come visit Doug and the camels.

Come learn about the U.S. Army Camel Experiment with Doug Baum and the Texas Camel Corps!

Wednesday May 14 - Thursday May 15, 2025 9am-4pm

DID YOU KNOW?
The U.S. Army Camel Corps (1856-1861) not only passed through Fort Davis, but the camels would also pass through what would become El Morro National Monument and Petrified Forest National Park! The first of these camels, 34 camels to be precise, landed in Indianola, Texas on May 14, 1856 -- 169 years ago!

“Reading isn’t a privilege.  I believe we all have the right to leave our problems and escape into another world, if only through the written word.” – Chris Whitaker, British author

BIG BEND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ‑‑ Please join us for the Big Bend Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting!! Our meeting will be held in person at the Red Pattillo community center at 6:15 pm Thursday, May 8th, 2025! All are encouraged to attend!

CRISIS CENTER OF THE BIG BEND ‑‑ Hey there everyone, just got an email from the ladies at West Texas food bank, coming Thursday, May 8th and Friday, May 9th. They will bring the new scanner system.

Anyone wishing to receive a food box should re-register.  To get the scanner card, you'll need to bring a photo ID or an invoice showing your current address.  Also, remember that senior boxes belong to an independent program and eligibility is income dependent.  One of the new rules is that boxes will be distributed to a regular box by home, not by last name or family size.

These ladies are coming to sign everyone up and see how this works here in South County.  These changes are being implemented to better serve the growing community.

Thank you,

Debra y Michael

JUST A REMINDER ‑‑ The Brewster County Tax Assessor-Collector and County Clerk will be in Terlingua at the Fire and EMS building the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 10 am to 3 pm.  Most vehicle title and registrations can be handled here.  May dates are May 14th and May 20th.

VOICES FROM BOTH SIDES ‑‑ Voices 2025 will be Sat. May 10th.  The "Fiesta Protesta" remains true in its origin.  Both sides will participate in the exchange of music, food and love for the Rio that binds us together.  10a.m.- 6p.m.  We will have the blessing as in years past between 11ish and noonish.  Bring your chair. Bring your coolers.  Bring your friendship, memories and celebrate as only we can do.  Pack your trash out.  Keep it simple, respectful.  Many thanks to the handful of people holding down the future of Voices from Both Sides.

FYI ‑‑ Sat. May 10th, after Voices from Both Sides, the fun will shift to DB’s end of season customer appreciation party with complimentary food and drink, plus Terlingua’s own “Los Pinche Gringos” from 8-11pm.  It’s gonna be a good time.  See y’all there-DB

SATURDAY COMMUNITY MARKET AND MOBILE LIBRARY ‑‑ Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're here every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items. You'll also be able to enjoy our fabulous local mobile library from 10:00-3:00.

Prepared food vendors must display current food handling license. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.
