A DESERTED FAIRNESS

In Brewster’s sunlit, rugged land,

Where mesas rise and cacti stand,

The winds whisper tales of toil,

Yet justice falters on this soil.

The promise shines, a beacon clear,

That work and worth should persevere,

But shadows stretch where pride should reign,

And merit's voice calls out in vain.

Connections weave an unseen thread,

Binding dreams till hope has fled.

A name, a nod, a whispered word—

The strongest winds are never heard.

The hand that builds, the mind that dreams,

Are left to wade upstream through streams.

For in the halls where power dwells,

The echo of fair chance rebels.

Yet somewhere in this rugged place,

A seed of change begins its race.

The roots grow deep, the heart beats strong,

To right the balance tipped so wrong.

Oh, Brewster County, desert vast,

May justice find you, free at last.

And every soul, no matter small,

Rise by their merit, equal to all.

December 23, 2024
by Terlingua Thinking Team

"Joy will find its way to you, maybe it’ll come with the morning dew, right where those flowers grew/Butterflies flew, and on their wings they always bring the kind of peace to ease your grieving/Love is gonna come again/Oh, love is gonna come again." -- Love Is Going to Come Again, by Jaimee Harris/Graham Weber

"Yea, we all could use a little mercy now/I know we don’t deserve it/But we need it anyhow/We hang in the balance/Dangle ‘tween hell and hallowed ground/Every single one of us could use some mercy now." -- Mercy Now, by Mary Gauthier

DESERT PERMACULTURE
If you've noticed, Terlingua could use more shady places to park and sit. Even though this is a desert, it's not supposed to be this eroded and barren; sadly though, deforestation and over-grazing degraded the local ecology.  Fortunately, permaculture can easily restore native tree and grass cover, and it can be done without irrigation, fertilizer, soil amendments, or additional plant material, believe it or not! Eco-Logic is a local business offering other locals a free written permaculture strategy or special on-site consultation to restore the landscape to ecological balance. Sign up at ecologiclandscape.com/free-strategy
