TWO NATIONS/ONE PARK – in 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt wrote to Manual Avila Camacho, President of the United Mexican States:  “I do not believe that this undertaking in the Big Bend (referring to the establishment of Big Bend National Park) will be complete until the entire park area in this region on both sides of the Rio Grande forms one great international park.”  Although Mexico does not have national parks, talk of a protected area on both sides of the Rio Grande continues to this day.

The proposal is still just a thought with no serious plans by either government to complete Roosevelt’s dream for both countries.  But, if you are interested in “how a big dream for the US and Mexico could help both countries,” you can join a Zoom meeting with El Paso Zoo Education Curator Rick LoBello who has been advocating for the project since 1988.

Learn about what can happen next and how the proposal could impact major problems both countries are facing with climate change, the border wall, conservation of rare and endangered species, immigration, the economy and US Mexico relations. To join the public meeting click this Zoom link on November 19 at 4pm Mountain Time.

Sponsored by the Chihuahuan Desert Education Coalition, advocating for conservation education in the northern Chihuahuan Desert Region since 2004.

NEWS FROM BBNP
The Brewster County Tourism Council and Visit Big Bend have received notice from the National Park Service that they have increased their public access areas in Big Bend National Park to include the eastern park road to Rio Grande Village. With the eastern end of the park reopening, trails including the Boquillas Canyon trail will now be available for day use. Fourteen trails, overlooks and picnic areas will be open to the public with this expansion. Restrooms along the open route will also be open.  This increase provides over 80 miles of roadway to drive and enjoy this unique National Park.

Locations within the Park that will remain closed include all campgrounds and campsites, including RV areas, the Chisos Basin Lodge & Restaurant, areas for river use, backcountry trails, the Boquillas Crossing Port of Entry and all unpaved roads except to Dug Out Wells. The paved road to Castolon and Santa Elena Canyon will also remain closed.

Brewster County hotels and businesses are ready and continue to follow CDC guidelines to fight the spread of COVID-19. All businesses require a face covering for patrons, as well as their employees, and are practicing social distancing measures. Restaurants are open for dine-in with reduced occupancy levels and the option of to-go orders. Hotel accommodations, camping, and RV sites are available just outside the Park in the nearby communities of Study Butte, Terlingua, Lajitas, and Marathon. The Big Bend Ranch State Park also remains open for limited use.

Outfitters in the area are also prepared for increased visitation over the holiday weekend with safety considerations being the top priority. They are encouraging people planning to visit to call ahead now to reserve space for activities this weekend such as horseback riding, ziplining, golf outings and river trips. Most activities in the Big Bend area are still available to book over Labor Day weekend along with numerous stargazing opportunities in the dark skies certified areas throughout Brewster County.

Big Bend National Park is located in Brewster County, Texas which falls under a mandatory mask order in public places along with group size restrictions to 5 people or the size of your household – whichever is greater. As of today, Brewster County has Active Cases: 15 and Daily hospitalizations: 4

INDIA UPDATE AND THANK YOU!
Just letting everyone know  Our teeth are doing great now after visiting Dental One in Ojinaga.  Our last visit to the  West Texas eye Care in Ft. Stockton  went pretty well after all the surgeries we both had when we went to El Paso.  William still has a couple bumps close to his iris.  That will be more miner surgery  in a few weeks. His Cataracts have been taken out..... Surgery took a little longer . So they're both out … and he has lenses  now.   His eyesight is great now ... He was able to read eye chart this time. Lots of eye drops and Antibiotics     ..  They decided to take the growth off my right eye first because it was so big. Surgery took about 17 minutes. I did not feel any pain even after my surgery. Dr. told me the tissue behind the eye was great. I was able to read the eye chart well. In a month I have to go back to El Paso to get that last Cataract  out and put in lenses. Then that should be all for me. Just want to thank each and every one who helped us out ... We were told we had to have the surgeries very soon.  Will keep everyone informed on our progress.    William and India

ALPINE’S ARTWALK 2020
is postponed until spring 2021
Alpine’s Gallery Night, Inc. Board of Directors voted unanimously to postpone this year’s Artwalk until the spring of 2021.  After closely reviewing the new information on the rising cases of Covid-19 that are being reported in El Paso and Midland/Odessa the Board felt like it is too risky to invite over 9,000 attendees to come to Alpine during our event.  Our main concern is the health of our community.
“We are saddened to have to make this decision, however when we decided earlier this year to move forward with Artwalk 2020 we all said that there had to be a date to finalize moving forward or postponing the event” said John Davis, president of the Board of Alpine’s Gallery Night, Inc.  Kerri Blackman, Founder and Executive Director is reaching out to art and food vendors to return their fees at this time.
