SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE “GET OUT THE COUNT” CENSUS COORDINATOR – The 2020 Census self-response deadline is September 30 and it's never been more important to respond.  Census takers are currently out in communities to ensure a complete and accurate count.  Census data determines a state’s congressional seats and federal funding for Medicare, Medicaid, roads, schools, and other essential resources.  People living in Far West Texas are an historically undercounted population.  When people are not counted, communities can lose out on federal funding allotted every year for health clinics, schools, food assistance and hundreds of other critical services and programs that make a difference in our lives every day.

Respond today! You can go online at 2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020 for English and 844-468-2020 for Spanish.  You may use the paper form you received at your home.  Respond today.  Everyone counts!

Editor’s comment: Remember:  an accurate Census count will ensure funds for medical, food assistance, education and more.  Everyone Counts!  Our representation in both the Texas State and Federal Congresses are based on the Census – for the next TEN! YEARS! As of August 16, South County response is only 24.2% -- compared to the National response rate: 63.8% and Texas at 58.9%. That means that OUR tax money will go to other parts of the State!  Stand up and be COUNTED!!!

MICHAEL (Mike) BASKETTE   Long-time Terlingua resident, Mike Baskette passed from this life on July 27, 2020, in Dallas at the home of a friend. He was 72.  Mike was born October, 17, 1947, in Princeton, Indiana, but his family got him to Texas as soon as they could!  He started school in Gainesville, TX.  Mike attended Rider High School in Wichita Falls until the last semester of his Senior year.  His family moved to Hobbs, NM, and he graduated from there in 1965.  He attended NM Jr. College and New Mexico State University. Mike was a Senior Field Engineering Supervisor for Camco Trading Corporation and lived and worked in Singapore in the 70’s.  While working for them he was able to travel to many countries all over the world. Mike loved sports.  He played softball and coached little league football and was a certified football referee before moving to Terlingua in 1992.  From 1997-2005 he worked with one of his best friends from college, Ringo Smith, who owned and operated the Study Butte Store, and Mike also managed the Café at the Big Bend Motor Inn (2005-2008) before retiring.  In 2000 he was on the Census Team for Brewster County.  Mike’s ashes will be scattered over some of his favorite places in the Big Bend area.  Editor's note: Mike has been missed since he left the area.  Our heartfelt best wishes to his family and friends.

PRESS RELEASE – 8/19/2020 -- The Big Bend COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Fund will be sending out our final checks this month, August 2020.  The Fund was established in March 2020 to help Brewster County residents deal with hardships caused by the pandemic. Volunteers from Alpine and Terlingua started the fund through Big Bend Citizens Alliance—a Terlingua-based non-profit organization.  The Fund has awarded over $67,000 to help residents and non-profits cover costs for housing and transportation, medical expenses, utilities, food, childcare needs, and animal feed.  As we close out the Fund, we want to extend our sincerest gratitude to the volunteers, organizations and private individuals who so generously donated their time and money.  This has been an outstanding show of community support and we could not have done it without you - THANK YOU.

Please continue to support the Big Bend Citizens Alliance. Visit https://bigbendcitizensalliance.org/ to learn more about the organization and how to get involved.

The proclamation by Texas Gov Abbott did 2 things: 1) Extends early voting for the November 3 election from Oct 13 to Oct 30.  2) Allows those who want to turn in their mail ballot in person to do so at ANY time prior to the election and on election day.  To turn in your mail ballot you mark it, seal it in the envelope for mailing and, in Brewster County, take it personally to the Early Voting Clerk, Lora Nussbaum, at 203 N 7th St, Alpine, during regular business hours.   You can only turn in your own ballot and you must show your ID to prove that.  The web site for the proclamation is: https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/governor-abbott-extends-early-voting-period-for-november-3rd-election

EDUCATIONAL FUND FOR THE STOCKBRIDGE CHILDREN:  We are grateful to share the news that Texas Wildlife Association Director and Executive Committee member Nyle Maxwell and his wife Nancy have established an educational trust fund for Jameson and London Stockbridge for their future education after the tragic loss of their father Dewey Stockbridge from a helicopter crash at the Black Gap WMA in Brewster County on August 8th.  Please click or search the link below for the full story and information on how to donate:     https://www.texas-wildlife.org/resources/news/black-gap-wma-tragedy-one-way-to-help

This year it is likely without donations the scholarships may be less or none for the 2021 seniors. If you are looking to donate for a wonderful cause that will directly impact an individual students life please consider Big Bend High School. Donations can be mailed to:  CASI Scholarship Program, 329 W. Tucker, Hobbs, NM. 88242      *make sure to specify it is for Big Bend High School.  Make a donation that counts! And stay safe so the chili cook-off can happen in 2021 🌶!

Stand up and be counted!

An accurate Census count will ensure funds for medical, food assistance, education and more.   Remember: The next 10 years of funding and representation in government depends on population count….

On Tuesday, August 11, the U.S. Census Bureau will begin visiting households that have not responded to the 2020 Census as part of its Nonresponse Followup (NRFU) operation. To ensure a complete and accurate count, census takers will visit households through September 30 and will enter information on their Census Bureau issued smart phone to ensure information is safe and secure. Households can continue to self-respond online at 2020census.gov or by phone 844-330-2020 for English or 844-468-2020 for Spanish. Self-responding online, by phone, or by mail reduces the likelihood a census taker will visit a person’s home.

Chili cook-off events have been canceled for this year in Terlingua. These events bring a lot of money in scholarships to our tiny little school and graduating classes of sometimes less than 10 kids (which means that even if you are Valedictorian you don't get in big colleges because you are not in the top 10). The kids depend on these scholarships and some work their entire school career to graduate high and get that money to further their education. These scholarships can mean going to college or not for some.
This year it is likely that without donations the scholarships may be less or none for our 2021 seniors.
If you give money for anything this year, donate it here and specify for Big Bend High School graduates. If you give money for anything this year, donate it here and specify for Big Bend High School graduates.

When you experience sunrise in the depths of the desert, I think it's impossible not to feel a glimmer of hope, a hint of optimism, a dash of energy to carry you into the day. Silently magnificent, dawn in the desert offers the promise of something new, and in doing so, heals battered spirits.  ~Lindy Severns

Heard on the Porch

The wild burros have found their way into town. I saw them at the EMS Station at 2 pm today. Be careful driving at night.

There has been some clean-up going on up at Cowhead Ranch ( a lot of clean-up) and we are making headway.  Every step forward is progress.

Then this weekend as we begin our Saturday task, what to our wandering eye appears?!

The goodness and love of others!  Standing proudly at the gate, placed by angels during the week.  Feeling all the glory of the Big Bend, new Cowhead Ranch signage.   Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Desert Sports in Terlingua is now open. They require masks indoors and do social distancing. They clean things regularly in the store and limit size of groups inside. I want everyone to know how professional they are so they can support their business. Please share my post if you are so inclined.

We recently rented bikes from them, and Chris and Mike kept us and themselves safe while we did that. The mountain biking was fun! We could enjoy ourselves immensely in the great outdoors with no risk from the virus.

Plus Mike is now fixing Butch’s 35-year-old mountain bike! Mike gave me a quick lesson on shifting gears so that I really understood it. He showed how a pickup tailgate and a blanket double as a bike rack by covering the upright tailgate w the blanket and draping the front tire over it and then tying it down. Wow!

Chris has consistently supported children in the arts locally with her talent, love and enthusiasm for many years. I love her beautiful photography and art. I love her beautiful soul.

Chris and Mike recently participated in a skillful and courageous rescue of a tourist stranded on a high cliff and then rafted him to safety in the dark! I won’t go into detail, but they need to write a book about that!

Thank you, Chris and Mike! You are gems!

Thank you for all that and for flattening the curve.   ~ Adrienne Evans

Mail voting in Brewster County

In case you haven't noticed, there is an election coming up on November 3, 2020.  If you are 65 years old or older, have a disability, or will be out of town on election day, you are eligible for absentee/mail-in voting.

You can request a mail ballot by contacting our Brewster County Elections Administrator, Lora Nussbaum, 432-837-6230, or by filling out the attached application form and mailing it to her.  After Lora receives your application, she will send your ballot that you can complete in the comfort of your home and return to her.

Because of a law passed by the Texas Legislature in its last session, there is no straight party voting and the ballot will be long.  Also, the legislature made access to early voting in remote areas (think Study Butte, BBNP, Marathon) almost impossible for rural counties like Brewster to implement.  Early voting will be available in Alpine for all precincts October 13 - October 30.

Let's face it, Covid-19 will most likely still be around in November.  If you are eligible and take advantage of mail-in voting, you can eliminate standing in long lines at the polls thereby reducing your risk of getting the virus.  During the recent primary run-off election, 100% of the mail ballots in Brewster County that were received before the deadline were signature cleared and counted.

If you have any questions concerning mail-in voting, please contact Lora.  And, PLEASE, everyone VOTE!

As of August 9:  Our National response rate is: 63.3%;  Texas is:  58.3%; and South County is:  23.8%.

The 2020 Census self-response deadline is September 30 and it's never been more important to respond. Census takers are currently out in communities to ensure a complete and accurate count. By MaeWestern

“All over the world, people are being quarantined and are being compelled to practice social distancing. We are trying desperately to remain sane in a world that seems bordering on the insane. So, the time is just right for us to ponder, reflect, meditate, and discover the world within our own minds.”  Avijeet Das

BBNP Continues to Protect Native Bighorn Sheep

On August 5, the National Park Service (NPS) will continue with measures to protect desert bighorn sheep at Big Bend National Park, which include reducing its population of non-native aoudads (Barbary sheep).

The national park is still closed as of this writing. If the park has reopened or partially reopened at the time of this project, the staff reminds visitors to observe all posted closures for their own safety.

The Deadhorse Mountains and surrounding areas, including the Dagger Flat Road and Old Ore Road (see map available on request), will be closed from August 5 through August 7 while the NPS works with Texas Parks and Wildlife to remove the Barbary sheep using helicopters and staff trained in aerial shooting operations. Please see the map for detailed closures and access information

Barbary sheep have been in the park for the past three decades and have increased significantly in recent years. Hundreds of Barbary sheep inhabit the park, but the park has only one very small known population of native desert bighorn sheep. Barbary sheep control is necessary as they compete with native species including preventing desert bighorn from accessing water, threaten biodiversity, and impair park visitor’s ability to experience natural conditions and scenery.

This effort is part of Big Bend’s long-term, integrated approach to control exotic animals and protect park resources. Management of aoudad is in keeping with the Big Bend Exotic Animal Management Plan and Environmental Assessment, finalized in June, 2018. To see this plan, visit www.parkplanning.nps.gov/bibe.

Big Bend Ranch SP Partial Closure Aug. 9-16

The interior of the Big Bend Ranch State Park Complex will be closed for the safety of park visitors during wildlife surveys Aug. 9-16. During the surveys, staff will be counting desert bighorn sheep by helicopter and performing the lethal removal of non-native aoudad (barbary sheep) when encountered.

Aoudad compete heavily for resources with the bighorn sheep and other native species and have the potential to transmit diseases to the sheep. Control of this invasive species is needed to protect the park’s native plants and animals as well as springs and other water resources that animals depend upon.

The Barton Warnock Visitor Center (east entrance) and Fort Leaton State Historic Site (west entrance) will remain open during these surveys. Please note that the rooms of the fort are open for touring, but exhibits are closed. Park facilities, campgrounds, river access and trails south of FM170 (River Road), and The Contrabando Trail System, are open.

Information about bighorn sheep can be found on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website.
