TERLINGUA MOON – July 18, 2017
by Terlingua Thinking Team!!!
Watch the kids. Do like they do. Act like they act. Yell like they yell. Dance the ways you see them dance. Sing like they sing. Work and rest the way the kids do. You'll be healthier. You'll feel wealthier. You'll talk wiser. You'll go higher, do better, and live longer here amongst us if you'll just only jump in here and swim around and sing like these kids sing and do like the kids do. Six people inside Jeep as it was swept over 400 yards down a wash but they are okay.
The Big Bend National Park Service urges drivers to not attempt crossing over running water after jeep with six people inside it was swept over 400 yards down a wash. According to BBNPs Facebook page the vehicle was attempting to cross a stream less than 8 inches deep. In an image shared by their Facebook page debris is visible in the windshield of the vehicle. According to their post the water began stacking up once the vehicle stopped, pinned two doors shut and, filled the cab with water. Six people were inside the vehicle but were able to get out safely and contact rangers for help.

The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

Wylie Rain Catchment tanks - the Gold Standard. We aim to have the order filled and turned in by the end of July. Contact us at elcentro432@gmail, (512) 924-2506 or (432) 371-2506.  Our answering machine is worn out; we have a new one on order.  If you don't call back, please contact via email or the cell number.

Terlingua Recycles could surely use a few more volunteers, especially as our core group is away for the summer months. This past week we turned in one of our largest loads ever which is great in that folks - residents and visitors - are recycling and helping to minimize our footprint on this planet. We still need your help with the recycling process (even if you can't volunteer time to help with the processing.
Some are new to recycling (thank you!) and some have been doing so for some time. A few things to note - all items that we accept are clearly marked on the sign in front of the recycling bins (located just behind the Terlingua EMS station).
No matter what you recycle, please be sure it's clean. Human beings have to sort through all items as we parse out the recyclables at the recycling station in BBNP.
Plastic: Bubble wrap is not an acceptable item. Plastic hair brushes and tent stakes are not acceptable plastic. (Think about it). Please rinse milk and other plastic containers and smash them as well as possible before placing in bins.
Cardboard: Please break down boxes as best you can. Tossing into boxes a) take-up a considerable amount of space and causes the volunteers to have to break down the boxes.
Aluminum: Again, clean aluminum. Not crumpled up aluminum foil with the remnants of last night's barbecue. Ditto no window frames or metal tent stakes.
NO BATTERIES OR CAUSTIC MATERIALS. EVER. PERIOD.
Please use common sense when the bins are full. There is a not-to-exceed line marked on each bin. If you exceed those levels it creates a lot of extra work. If a bin is full, please take your items home and store for a few days. Right now, we are making special runs to keep with the overflow and "catch-up" from heavy use. If bins are overflowing, trust us, we're aware. One of our few volunteers goes by there every day.
Local establishments, especially bars and restaurants. We're glad you're recycling too! Please realize that you are among the largest contributors to the recyclable items left at the center. Please try to coordinate with your staff and rotate a volunteer from time to time. Establishment owners are more than welcome, too! We want to facilitate recycling as much as possible but this is a community effort.
All of this really boils down to common sense and not abusing the program - lending a hand when you can. Many hands make light work.
We all recycle because we feel it is important. Let's work together and keep south Brewster clean and green. If you can spare a little (or lot of) time to volunteer, whether at the recycling center behind the EMS in between runs to BBNP or during the runs into the park, send us a FB message for more info.
Thank You!

Study Butte Residents Have Their Water Restored

Study Butte and Terlingua residents are finally enjoying some relief after 13 days of extreme temperatures and being without water service.  A presumed lightening strike damaged the motor on the SBWSC system main producing well on June 19.  A new motor was installed by Skinner Well Service on Friday, June 30 and water production began throughout the night bringing the system back online. The system, which serves 248 south Brewster County residents, took about 24 hours to pressurize and today the system is fully operational.

During the outage,  trucks from the Texas Forest Service, Pecos County, Big Bend National Park, and Terlingua Fire and EMS transported water donated by Lajitas Resorts and Big Bend Resorts and Adventures to the Bee Mtn. storage tank in an all out effort to maintain volume and pressure.  The outage also allowed system operators to work on and make repairs to lines and equipment that should increase the water delivery efficiency. With the main well out of operation, water production was reduced to 42 gallons gpm.   Installing the new motor increased the system production to above 180 gpm which is adequate to provide the community needs.  Under normal conditions, system demand is about 80 pgm and with the extreme temperatures the demand is increased.

All residents are advised to continue water conservation as the Level 4 Water Conservation Emergency measures remains in effect.  This means water may be used for normal household use while watering lawns, gardens, washing vehicles, etc is prohibited.  Residents are advised to boil water used for consumption (see the Boil Water notice at www.studybuttewater.com for details).

Bottled drinking water has been donated by numerous organizations and is available to those in need at the Brewster County Emergency Services Center in Terlingua. Drinking water remains available to those in need at the Terlingua EMS building from daily 10am to 2pm.
