TERLINGUA MOON
27 October 2015
Vol. 26, No. 43

by twEyeLight raVen

“Of all the things I wondered about on this land, I wondered the hardest about the seduction of certain geographies that feel like home — not by story or blood but merely by their forms and colors. How our perceptions are our only internal map of the world, how there are places that claim you and places that warn you away. How you can fall in love with the light.”  Ellen Meloy

BECOMING FINE ART AND MECHANIC CENTER: If your mechanic tells you you need a repair that's so expensive it's a financial hardship for you, seek a second opinion. Mechanics, like doctors, can diagnose more than one problem from the same set of symptoms. Getting a second opinion is simply a check-up, a cross reference, before you spend a pile of money. If the second opinion confirms the first, you can return to the original shop to get the work done. my name is Antonio Guerrero 4323712694. Gallery is open with new locally made crafts and art. Open afternoons and evenings.

ALPINE ANIMAL SHELTER:  MAX and OREO are 10-month old shepherd mixes with beautiful markings. They do not need to be adopted together. MAX is the more submissive of the two. He is desperate for love and hoping for lots of walks and snuggles in his new home. MAX gets along with other dogs but needs a dog-sibling that won’t take advantage of his submissiveness by bullying him. OREO is up for anything and everything! He is playful and very curious about the world. His activity needs seem to be higher than his brother MAX. With a little training, he will be an eternally grateful running, walking, hiking partner. OREO and MAX are both good with kids and other dogs, neutered, micro chipped, and up to date on all shots. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. All AAS animals are online at https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=TX1202 For more info email heatherthemule@gmail.com

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS  (Please join us at sundown at the Terlingua Cemetery on November 2)
We have a history in Terlingua of celebrating Dia De Los Muertos.  Día de los Muertos has both indigenous origins from the Aztec festival for Mictecacihuatl, The Lady of The Dead, and Catholic origins from the Spanish conquistadors’ All Saints and All Souls Day.  Traditionally, Nov. 1 is when the souls of children that have died is observed, known as Día de los Inocentes (Day of the Innocents) or Día de los Angelitos (Day of the Little Angels). Nov. 2 is when the adult souls arrive.

Each year on November 2, the residents of Terlingua spend an evening in our 111-year old cemetery where the graves are decorated and our loved ones remembered and honored.  It is a celebration of life and memories and a time to be thankful for the gift of living and the joys of fellowship, family, and love.

Those who celebrate Día de los Muertos will usually put up altars honoring those members of the family who have passed away. They decorate the altars with candles, sugar skulls, marigolds, food, beverages and clothes. These offerings, or "ofrendas," are gifts for the dead and are usually a combination of his or her favorite things. Like the holiday itself, the altar also has mixed imagery of both indigenous and Catholic background. The graves of the deceased are also visited and honored with offerings as well as vigils.

The most recognized skull on Dia de los Muertos is the Calavera Catrina. The image as we know it today originated with José Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican Artist who depicted a fancy female skeleton as a dig against the Europhile Mexican elite during the Porfirio Díaz dictatorship. It became an iconic image of the Mexican Revolution at the beginning of the twentieth century.  But the actual Catrina is said to have originated thanks to the Aztec tale of Mictecacihuatl, the Lady of the Dead.

Please join us at sundown on November 2.  We will have some candles on hand but you may also bring some of your own.  Please bring a lighter or matches.  If you have items to be placed on any of your family members' graves, please be sure they are weighted or able to be tied as the winds this year have been especially high.

If you have a loved one you would like to remember but who is not buried in the Terlingua Cemetery, there will also be two altars where you can place a photo and candle (or other representational memento).  Participants usually bring a potluck dish as well and, afterwards, there is a bonfire that continues "the light" in the evening.  It is a beautiful celebration - not a sad one.  Friends and family are reunited with their loved ones and lives are remembered with joy.

Also, on November 2nd- ALL SOULS' DAY SERVICE AT SANTA INEZ in the Terlingua Ghost Town at 5pm led by the Rev. Kay Jennings of the Big Bend Episcopal Mission. 1st Saturday Evening Prayer Service cancelled for November 7th/Chili Cookoff Weekend.
