The General Election takes place on November 5th. Many more voter registration events will be scheduled between now and October 7, the last day to register to vote for the General Election. The mail ballot application deadline is October 25th. Early voting begins October 21st and ends November 1st. The Tri-County Voter Promoters encourages people to vote and helps them to do so.  We help them find out if they are fully registered, or if they need to update their registration with a new address.  We show them how to check their voter status at the Secretary of State’s My Voter Portal.  We are a nonpartisan organization that registers all comers.  Our goal is to expand the voter base, with special attention to younger voters and Spanish-speakers with low registration rates.  The Tri-County Voter Promoters believe that YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE, and YOUR VOTE COUNTS.  Helping people register to vote for the very first time or helping them ensure they are still registered, can be rewarding experiences.  And participating in the democratic process can be EMPOWERING! Don’t forget: the next PUBLIC MEETING of our Jeff Davis County Democratic Party & FRIENDS will be held August 24th, 11 am, at the Jeff Davis County Community Center (601 Cemetery Road in Fort Davis).

Ramon Rodriguez Aranda will discuss his Get-Out-The-Vote Plan for the City of Presidio, which will be expanded to cover the entire tri-county area.

Stop by Earth & Fire Gallery and check out photography by the featured artist for the month of August, Tony Drewry. He is sharing some of his captures from the wilds of the Big Bend, printed on archival photo paper by Hark Fine Art Printing; some are framed and some loose, and there is something for any budget and some brand new prints arriving early next week. Lots of other great works from some of the best local artists in and around Terlingua to shop, too. If the OPEN sign is on, come on in!

Attention Parents: School registration for all grades is next week, August 19 – 22 from 9am to 4pm at the high school building. Please bring a utility bill for proof of address and current insurance to set up your transportation reimbursement. It’s going to be a great year!

Terlingua Recycling
Location is on Road Runner Circle off SH 118  before Cottonwood Store going south on west side of the highway.  Before the school and at the ball fields.   And please don’t leave anything at the gate because the animals and the wind will have it scattered all over.
The TOGG guys will be back out on August 24 from 9 to  11. Actually I haven't checked with the other grouchy guy but this will give him something to be grouchy about. We filled up last Saturday so we'll try for that again.  - - -
There is no charge   We take clean dry card board with as much of the tape removed as possible. Clean aluminum and tin cans not crushed.  Clean plastic # 1 and 2. Heavy shipping paper. We don’t want small pieces of paper that can blow away or small items like RX bottles. All of this Robert takes to Big Bend NP where it is combined with the park's stuff in large wire containers. The wire is about 4,inches apart so small items will fall out when compressed creating a mess. Any thing else will go home with you.  We have to go by the park standard because the park has final say so. If the park ever shuts us down for bringing non acceptable items we shut down. So we inspect everything   We are not shy about sending your non acceptable items back to your house. Alpine will take glass and electronics but not any thing in bulk from us. We are always happy to answer questions.

MILKY WAY TREATS ice cream trailer will be open this weekend, Sat-Mon, 4pm-9pm. Stop by and try one of our delicious sundaes or shakes. Don’t forget, we have pints to-go of homemade ice cream, made from scratch with love. We’re located next to The Boathouse. Gracias, Terlingua!

On 8-7-24, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) required our public water system Study Butte WSC, PWS ID 0220035 to issue a Boil Water Notice (BWN) to inform our customers that due to the presence of contaminants or an interruption in service, water from our system must be boiled prior to consumption.  Our system has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore adequate pressure, disinfectant levels, and/or bacteriological quality and has provided TCEQ with testing results that indicate that the water no longer requires boiling as of 8-16-2024.
If you have questions, contact Jorge Garcia at (432) 371-2913.  If a customer wishes to reach TCEQ, they may call 512-239-4691.

I'm melting... I'm melting. Anyone else finding this summer heat unbearable?
Here are some tips to stay cool and safe in the summer:
1) Avoid strenuous activity from 10 AM to 4 PM. Opt for a scenic drive along FM 170 or explore the exhibits at Fort Leaton State Historic Site.

BBAC
We had received a disaster grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts which has aided us in obtaining display shelving and cases so that we can populate the new gallery, "Big Bend Gallery" with art.  We are really close!
If you haven't been by, we will be located at 121 West Holland Ave, just a couple of doors down from the previous GOTS Gallery.
You may see folks in there working....if so, come on in and look at what is going on.  Still a little chaotic but it is becoming more organized.
We will have a BBAC meeting this Sunday at 2pm.  This will be held at the new location (121 W. Holland Ave).  We will go over plans for this year and hopefully develop a timeline for opening the gallery.  Some items may need more time to schedule such as some electrical work and work on making a facing for the brick wall.
The Big Bend Community Chorale (BBCC) is beginning rehearsals for their winter concert.  Dr. Andrew Alegria will present his plans at the first meeting of the Chorale.  All are welcome to join in!!  First rehearsal is Monday, August 26, 6pm at the Choir Room at SRSU, Fine Arts Building, on the second floor.
For more information about this group, visit:  BBCC  We have a Plein Air Weekend coming up. If you would like to join in, please contact Carol Fairlie or Liz Bartlett Culp-

MUSIC BASH TERLINGUA ‑‑ October 17-21, 2024 at the legendary Starlight Theatre, the Boathouse & DB’s Rustic Iron BBQ… Ghost Town/Terlingua.  The Terlingua Music Bash was conceived back in the 90's when Al Barlow and Garth Angleton from New Braunfels started making an annual trek to Terlingua.  They were joined by other musicians from Central Texas where they hung out and played music with the locals, resulting in decades long friendships and countless Terlingua moonlit song circles.  A gathering of free thinkers, reminiscing the old, while creating the new.  Participation has ebbed and flowed over the years, with Corba Jones keeping the fire burning for several years and, more recently, the Wayward Gypsies taking the reins when Corba could no longer make the trip out.  Last year, Cabin 10 became involved by joining the bash with a "Funky Junk" fundraiser, raising money to help fund the Mark Kneeskern "eYeBall" Scholarship at the Terlingua School.  With last year's success and the blessing from Al and Garth, this new alliance is excited to bring you the 2024 Terlingua Music Bash!  Still not for profit, and there is no cover charge.  Donations are most appreciated, as proceeds from donations and the Silent Auction go towards funding the scholarship.

Here’s the schedule…

EyEBall MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ‑‑ fundraiser is set for Saturday Oct. 19th at The Boathouse Bar & Bungalows, it is part of The Terlingua Music Bash that is happening that weekend.  CALLING on our Tribe to donate for the silent auction and raffle.

Last year no students applied for the yearly scholarship, so this year we are giving away TWO $2,000 scholarships to deserving Terlingua graduates.  This year is a special one because these kiddos that were 7 and 8 years old, made art with Mark in The Community Garden regularly.

In the spring of 2014, The Community Garden held an art show at the Terlingua School Library.

Asa, Marcy McElveen Reed, Bailey Asheley Baker, Luna Jason Barrett & Shyla, Maggie's daughter, were all award winners, along with 5 other students grades pre K-12th.  Shyla won the art show with her amazing Picasso style piece done in art pencil, and was featured in the the Big Bend Gazette.

Buckner, Voni Glaves , Joe and Sue, Zbynek Najser, and other amazing community members were the judges.  Mimi Webb Miller and Noami donated fresh juice; June Grimm donated her lovely cinnamon rolls; India donated yummy breads.  It was a true testament to our Love of Mark and our amazing community that we all live in and love, even when we are making a living someplace else.

A Decade has passed, but the ART is Eternal.  Please Help if you can, and tell A Friend.

MUSIC BASH TERLINGUA
October 17-21, 2024 at the legendary Starlight Theatre, the Boathouse & DB’s Rustic Iron BBQ… Ghostown / Terlingua.

From Robert: 'Since we are now called "TOGG" that makes it easier to type. So the other old grouchy guy gave the OK to open up again this Saturday. Works for me since I'm not sure if I'll be in town the next weekend after that. So Saturday, August 10 we'll be open again. So come on by.
