Terlinguans, if you want to do something to help our local bear to a safer location than our community, Crista Demere is the Parks and Wildlife diversity wildlife biologist for our area. I’ve spoken to the sheriff’s department, Eric Wilmarth (our game warden), and have left a message with Crista. Apparently any action taken is up to Parks and Wildlife.
I was told by Mr. Wilmarth that as far as he knows, hazing the bear away, educating the public, and getting bear-proof dumpsters is the current policy.
The problem is that the bear isn’t moving on, half the public here much of the year are tourists, and the bear-proof dumpsters will not be forthcoming any time soon.
Hunting season is also just around the corner. You know someone will shoot this bear. Please note: Bears in Texas are still listed as a threatened species and there are serious consequences for harming one. I was also told Parks and wildlife doesn’t want to set a precedent for relocation every time a bear shows up in a populated area. I’ve lived here a number of years and this is the first time a bear has adopted life in our community, so setting a precedent isn’t a realistic consideration. It’s THIS bear NOW that is the issue.
Maybe WE should set the precedent that our community matters, that no one wants to see the bear hurt, that just because nothing bad has happened yet doesn’t mean it won’t. Give Crista a call. 432 244-9945. If you see a bear, note time and location and let Parks and Wildlife know.
Mark you calendar 11/18/22! The school in Boquillas is hosting a fundraiser to put a new roof on the primary school. There will be a parade, bake sale, donations lunch, & horse races. It starts at 10 AM

It is starting to get chilly in the desert. That means tea time! If you are up for an adventure, consider visiting our teahouse.
What happens at the tea house? We drink tea! Hi quality, organic loose leaf caffeinated tea from China and Taiwan. Traditional tea ceremony is an opportunity to experience how one tea transforms over the course of many steepings in a beautiful setting drinking over casual conversation or in silence. If you are so inclined, I'm also happy to do a tea tasting where we compare 2-3 different teas.
We have a shade to keep us out of the sun, and the weather is absolutely perfect this time of year for tea in the morning or early afternoon. The teahouse is located one hour south of Marfa, and twenty minutes north of Presidio about 3 miles off the highway. We also have some great hiking trails that you are free to enjoy before or after the ceremony.
Email chinatiteahouse@gmail.com for additional information, booking, and pricing.

Bears Still Eating More and Sleeping Less. It's that time of year.
Hyperphagia is in full-swing and bears may be awake and searching for food up to 20 hours a day. It is extremely important that we do what we can to Keep Bears Wild. This means securing garbage and limiting anthropogenic food sources by using these
BearWise Basics:
1) Never Feed or Approach Bears
2) Secure Food, Garbage and don't reward bears with easy meals.
3) Remove outside pet food at night and feed pets indoors when possible
4) Clean and store your outdoor grills in a safe place - smells very tempting to a bear
5) Alert your neighbors and TPWD staff to bear activity in the area
If you see a bear near your dumpster or residence:
1) From a safe distance make loud noises, shout, bang pots and pans, set off a car alarm, honk a vehicle horn.
2) when the bear leaves secure or remove any attractants
3) ask neighbors to secure or remove any attractants
*Do Not Let Them Be Awarded With an Easy Trash Meal. Keep Bears Wild.
BearWise (https://bearwise.org/six-bearwise-basics/)
has many resources to help homeowners reduce bear activity near their homes and to help encourage bears to stay wild.

They gather in the West Texas desert, Terlingua, a ghost town.
Well that is until the first week in November, when the population swells with fanatics. What kind of fanatics you may ask? Well the kind that are particular about their Bowl of Red! For the uninitiated that’s Chili, Texas style Chili. This year marks the 55th annual “Original Terlingua International Chili Cook-off Championship”. It’s also the third year for me and second for Meg, attending.
Folks this is the Super Bowl of Texas style Chili championships. These purveyors of pungently potent palate numbing pots of perfection are extremely serious about their capsaicin creations. They compete all year to earn enough points to qualify.
Over 25 years ago the legacies of the originators decided to turn it into a party with a purpose. They chose to focus on ALS and raise funds to help those affected by it.
I can’t say enough about the people that organize and attend this amazing event. Pure love of fellow human beings; genuine, big hearts and beautiful souls. Meg and I are blessed to be here with our Terlingua family once again!
If you are looking for a reason to visit the Texas Big Bend area, you can’t get better than this.
