BREWSTER COUNTY CLEAN-UP DAY
SATURDAY, JUNE 18th
HEADS UP !  DUMP DAY !   Brewster County has plans for a Clean-Up Day on Saturday, June 18 from 10am-3pm at the Brewster County Yard located on FM-170 (River Road). The Solid Waste Management Grant we received in April for the Clean-Up Day and Scrap Tire Disposal has a performance period that ends in July, so we must get it done!

The County will be using a grant-funded cargo trailer we received last year for the Scrap Tire Disposal Project to collect all your scrap tires. We will also be accepting most all waste that the Alpine Land-Fill takes. However, no hazardous materials including asbestos and batteries can be accepted, and any appliance using Freon must be certified that the Freon has been removed and disposed of properly before the County will accept it.
Brewster County will follow-up with more information regarding the Brewster County Clean-up Day in the media and on the county website.

A SINCERE THANK YOU TO Judge Cano, Commissioner Hugh Garrett, Commissioner Ortega and ALL our County Commissioners

Continue Education during the summer months with the very interesting subjects below:

Cone-Nose Beetle aka Kissing Bugs, are back with a vengeance. Rachel Curtis, PhD student, Hamer Lab at Texas A&M contacted me last fall. She has been trying to figure out how to contact the residents of Terlingua to get some bugs to add to A&M collection from our area.  “My main interest right now is getting as many bugs from across the state as possible.  We’re interested in what species are in different locations and habitats, how many are infected, and which strain type of the parasite infects them.  All the bugs we receive are becoming the largest collection of kissing bugs in the U.S.  So, not only for my project, but potentially for many other projects after me, these bugs will be answering questions about kissing bugs and Chagas disease in Texas for a long time.  I would be able to send out a stack of printed pamphlets, if you would be able to pass them out and/or leave them in a store or other location where residents would be able to pick them up.  We also have a Spanish version, if that would help at all.  I can send more information about how to collect the bugs and send them.”  Let’s help Rachael to help us.  Contact her at:  Rachel Curtis, PhD Student, NSF Graduate Research Fellow | CVM Merit Scholar Department of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences | College of Veterinary Medicine Texas A&M University | College Station, TX 77843  OR at < KissingBug@cvm.tamu.edu> (The email version of this Moon will have a link to a color brochure about these pests and dangers)

Reasearch and read about these in depth; they are some of the most fascinating creatures in our desert:
The desert tortoise is an herbivore. Grasses form the bulk of its diet, but it also eats herbs, annual wildflowers, and new growth of cacti, as well as their fruit and flowers. Rocks and soil are also ingested, perhaps as a means of maintaining intestinal digestive bacteria as a source of supplementary calcium or other minerals. As with birds, stones may also function asgastroliths, enabling more efficient digestion of plant material in the stomach.[6]
Much of the tortoise’s water intake comes from moisture in the grasses and wildflowers they consume in the spring. A largeurinary bladder can store over 40% of the tortoise's body weight in water, urea, uric acid, and nitrogenous wastes. During very dry times, they may give off waste as a white paste rather than a watery urine. During periods of adequate rainfall, they drink copiously from any pools they find, and eliminate solid urates. The tortoises can increase their body weight by up to 40% after copious drinking.[13] Adult tortoises can survive a year or more without access to water.[6] During the summer and dry seasons, they rely on the water contained within cactus fruits and mesquite grass. To maintain sufficient water, they reabsorb water in their bladders, and move to humid underground burrows in the morning to prevent water loss by evaporation.[13]
Emptying the bladder  (which usually happens if you pick one up)  is one of the defense mechanisms of this tortoise. This can leave the tortoise in a very vulnerable condition in dry areas, and it should not be alarmed, handled, or picked up in the wild unless in imminent danger. If it must be handled, and its bladder is emptied, then water should be provided to restore the fluid in its body.

HOW DOES THIS MOON THING WORK?
Your Terlingua Moon is brought to you each week by your dedicated friends and neighbors. Their time, paper, ink and gasoline are all, entirely, volunteered. We try to enter your news items in the order they are received, but that isn’t always possible due to space availability.
When the Moon is full (this one; not the one at night), we sometimes give *locals first-page space.  *(within the micro-plex of Terlingua Ranch, Study Butte, Terlingua and Lajitas)
Sometimes, we front page, time-sensitive items, or those of extreme importance.  We try not to play favorites. And, we may condense your message.  We do not censor the basic content of your item, unless it is angry, crazy, vulgar, political, or downright outrageous.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
Submit items in crisp, simple font so we don’t have to change it.  Example: THIS Moon is written in Verdana, size 9.  HUGE, FANCY fonts will get you no special treatment.  Single-space all your text.  Re-read your submission aloud to yourself.  Eliminate redundancies, over and over again. Use common abbreviations when possible, such as months and days.
Get your ad into the Moon email address by 12:00 noon on any Monday to appear in the finished, distributed Moon the following Tuesday. Terlinguamoon@gmail.com
If you want to receive the electronic version, send your request to Terlinguamoon@gmail.com  SUBJECT: Add me to mailing list.  Please forward your electronic Moon to your email list.  Use BCC (blind copy) to protect the confidentiality of others’ info.  (Send the first one to yourself; blind copy all the rest.)
If your ad missed the Moon, send us an email, SUBJECT: Where is my ad?  Some ads disappeared a few issues back. If you use the BBT version of email, that might be the reason why.
