Slim fOUr - Feb. 7-11  5 days of remembering & celebrating Slim Richey!
Don’t get confused, embrace it…it’s all good, all good music celebrating the life of Mr. Cross Genre, Slim Richey. February 11th will mark Slim’s 81st birthday. We’ve missed Slim’s physical presence for the past fOUr years, but he left plenty behind for us to enjoy and remember him by, and that’s what Slim fOUr is all about.
In his early years, it was Jazz Guitar… studying Django, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, etc.…then in the 70’s & 80’s Slim shifted to fiddle music & Bluegrass. Slim produced recordings of and played with Alan Munde, Sam Bush, Tim O’Brien, Roland White and the likes. Then in 1977, past met present with Slim creating his own genre with the release of his record “Jazz Grass”.
In Slim’s later years, life and music became hep with “Viper” music… hipster Jazz tunes. Cab Calloway, Charlie Parker and the likes became the influences for The Jitterbug Vipers. For years, the Vipers’ pilgrimage to the desert would grace the stage of the Starlight Theatre and other local venues.
Now, fast forward to Slim fOUr and come out of your musical closet to enjoy a mix of fine ingredients that include Slim’s wife Francie Meaux Jeaux and her Jitterbug Vipers, Alan Munde, Guy Forsyth, Bill Kirchen, Emily Gimble, Cary Swinney, Spare Tire, The Paper Moonshiners, Three Hands High and many more.
Top notch musicians in a genre stew. Let’s eat, drink and be hep!!! Tickets available in advance at www.faroutbooking .com or call Jeffro @ 830-739-6986 for information.

Funky Junk is back and we want your art!  The Art show will open  at the Starlight on March 2.  Details to follow.
For now, start creating from your stash of recycled trash and treasures.

Just in case anyone in the Big Bend is planning a trip to El Paso this weekend, this is from El Paso KTSM news:
"EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Crews will be closing interstate 10 in both directions for 27 hours this weekend to finish up repairs at downtown.
The closure will be for the completion of the utility bridge that was damaged in last year's fiery crash....
The interstate will be closed in both directions starting Sunday (Jan 27th) at 3 AM. It's set to reopen Monday (Jan 28) at 6 AM. You'll want to avoid the area. Crews will be installing a water line and chain link fence."

So... the good news is we've had five individuals wanting
a Wylie tank on the early load we are putting together.
However; only one of those has confirmed with a deposit.
It takes an average of 8 tanks to fill a load. Now the salesman
at Wylie has notified us that prices go up 3% as of 2/4/19.
If this load fills soon, we will absorb that increase toward
good faith toward our locals.  We have had some pretty good
rains lately. Calculate what you might have caught here:
https://www.watercache.com/resources/rainwater-collection-calculator
Call us at 371-2506 to arrange your order and confirmation by way
of a minimal deposit. We don't cash your check until your tank arrives.

Meet Vega ~ She is a star!  ⭐  It is hard to know what is more striking, her glossy black coat or her perfectly imperfect button ears.   Regardless of how you look at it, one thing is certain, Vega is ready to shine!  She is 5 months old and weighs 35 pounds.  She has some big paws, so she still has some growing to do.  Vega is house-trained and crate-trained and has very good indoor manners. Vega loves to run and play with toys.  She would make an excellent jogging or hiking partner.  She is an enthusiastic people-lover, comes when called, and always keeps an eye on you no matter what she is doing.  Vega is currently in a foster home with two large dogs, and she fits right in and keeps up with them step for step. Vega is an alert, adventurous, super cute pup who is looking for her forever home so she can truly shine!  For more information, please email Jethro Homeward Bound Pets at mmwesttx@yahoo.com

Huge Thanks to the FABULOUS PAM WARE!!
Once again Pam Ware organized an incredible Pea Off celebration on January 1st - and Last Minute Low Budget Productions is thrilled, and humbled, to be the non-profit recipient of the proceeds.  The Pea Off is a long standing tradition in Terlingua - 27 years now? - as well as just being a great afternoon of fun.   And that Pam does all the work, just to give away the proceeds to a local non-profit speaks of her and our community - that's a Terlingua star!  Thanks Pam!

Friends of Catfish! A volunteer crew is installing plumbing in Fish's house to make it easier for him to remain independent, and at home. We are trying to raise about $700 to buy the fixtures, toilet, pex etc. Donations can be made at ShotTime liquor store. The pictured donation jar is there at the front counter. Thanks for the help!

Balmorhea State Park
The pool contractors are almost finished with the work inside of the pool.  They have replaced the high diving platform, removed the dam and sand bags that held the water back from the work area, and poured the cement decking. The next step will be to replace the historic shade pavilion.
Recently, our park staff have received a high volume of calls requesting updates on the reopening of the pool, San Solomon Courts, and/or campground. There is still a great deal of construction to be completed on the Courts, new campground restroom, and wastewater system replacement at the park before any of the facilities can reopen. The estimated date for reopening of the Courts and campground had been early spring, but due to unforeseen delays we no longer have an estimated opening date for any facilities. We will provide updates as soon as we learn new estimated dates. The photos below show the current state of construction at the Courts and campground restroom and two of the tanks that will be installed when the park’s wastewater system is replaced.

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK UPDATE!
We've been informed by the park superintendent, Bob Krumenaker, that trash is being picked up in the Chisos Basin by Forever Resorts, the folks who run concessions. Thank you to them! We are also in talks with other groups in the Big Bend region, @basecampterlingua and the Brewster County Tourism Council, to organize volunteer groups to help pick up trash throughout the park. The superintendent is confident that a plan will be approved by the acting Secretary of the Interior to take unused park entry fees to pay for trash pick up and custodial services. That decision should be coming soon! Thank you to our awesome Big Bend Community for making sure our Park remains open and clean for visitors!
It's always a good plan to pack out everything you bring in and help pick up trash while you visit Big Bend.  We will continue to keep you posted.
Additionally, because the park is not collecting entrance fees, we are encouraging people to make donations to The Big Bend conservancy at http://www.bigbendfriends.org/support

TERLINGUA MOON
January 8, 2019 Vol. 30 No. 2

Edited by Cactus Jane

“And if I loved you Wednesday,
Well, what is that to you?
I do not love you Thursday—
So much is true.
And why you come complaining
Is more than I can see.
I loved you Wednesday—yes—but what
Is that to me?”
~Edna St. Vincent Millay

This lovely lady has been in this community a very long time and she will now have to purchase water to replace what was lost. It is vandalism pure and simple. I hope you are proud.
