TEMPORARY CLOSURES FOR PRESCRIBED BURN ON 5/1 - 5/5

During the first week of May, Big Bend National Park fire managers will conduct a 149-acre prescribed burn along the Rio Grande.  This fire will be used as a natural resource habitat treatment to control exotic giant cane (Arundo donax).  The project area is located along 5 miles of river corridor from the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail to the mouth of Boquillas Canyon.  During this project, visitors will encounter a temporary closure of the road to Boquillas Canyon. Starting today, 4/22/23, the office will be open:

Monday thru Friday - 8AM - 3PM

Saturday - Sunday - 9AM-3PM

Starting May 7th, the café will be closed on Sunday and Monday and open:

Tuesday - Saturday - 7AM - 8PM.

SOUTH COUNTY LIBRARY PROJECT -  Survey Underway!

Our community survey, in Spanish and English, is now available.

We’ve gotten over 30 responses so far and we hope that is just the start.  Please tell us what you’d like to see in a library here in South County.  Think big—it’s not just about books!  Libraries these days can be important community centers that offer all sorts of services and opportunities beyond checking out books.  Borrowing tools, learning how to make things with a 3D printer, exercise class space— there are so many possibilities.  What is your dream for our community?

Submit a survey by May 15th and get a chance to win prizes— Lajitas zip line trip, Cottonwood groceries, or pizza at Long Draw.

The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

The Terlingua Double A Bar Group will hold an AA meetings on Tuesdays from 5:00 pm to 6 pm at the Crisis Center in the Ghost Town.

County trucks will haul your junk off to the landfill. Free to all Brewster County residents. Plain old junk, building materials, furniture, mattresses, bedding, household appliances such as water heaters (nothing with refrigerant), scrap lumber & metal, and carpet. We ask that you keep tires separate from other junk.  No: car batteries, asbestos, petroleum products, hazardous waste, etc.

Boquillas Port of Entry switches to summer schedule on May 1. The Boquillas Port of Entry within Big Bend National Park, providing access to the town of Boquillas, Coahuila, Mexico will change to the summer schedule beginning Monday, May 1st.  The port will be open four days a week, Friday through Monday. ADOPT A CAT?
Park employees at Castolon have captured a feral cat that cannot be allowed to roam free in the park.and are hoping to find someone outside the park who is willing to give it an outdoor "barn cat" home. He/she is a dark gray tabby that weighs about 7-8 pounds (guessing). The cat will be taken to the veterinarian in Alpine next week for neutering, rabies vaccine and FIV test. Big Bend Citizens Alliance and Terlingua Common School District are partnering to create a new library in South Brewster County!

For many years, library services have been offered to the public through the school library at Terlingua Common School District.  Unfortunately, because of new school regulations, TCSD will no longer be able to provide these services.  Rather than lose county funding currently provided to TCSB for public access to the library, Reagan Reed, TCSD Superintendent and Joselyn Fenstermacher, BBCA President are working with County Commissioners to create a new Public Library to serve South County.

Mr. Adam Daley had the following students advance to the State History Fair. Seniors: Melenie, Ethan, Chase, and Kaycie, Sophomore: Evan, and Freshman: Anthony competed in Austin at the University of Texas. Sophomores Luna and Shyla earned a Regional award at their Sul Ross competition that allowed them an invite to attend the State History Fair as well. Go Paisanos!

Sarah (Whitson) Bourbon

September 12, 1946 ~ March 30, 2023 (age 76)

Obituary

Sarah Whitson Bourbon, 76 of Terlingua, Texas passed away on March 30, 2023 at her home in Terlingua, TX. 

Sarah was born September 12, 1946 to Caroline and John Whitson in Denton, TX. Sarah graduated from Denton High School, and later attended University of North Texas where she gained a bachelor's degree in Arts in 1970. In 1980 she became Managing Director of Texas Monthly. During her tenure at Texas Monthly she discovered the Big Bend and fell in love with the area. Soon after, she met and married Bill Bourbon on February 1, 1987. 

Sarah was an avid bird watcher. She never passed up the chance to visit a Goodwill, always in hopes of a good bargain. She loved cuisine of all cultures. She loved her pets, family, friends, and all things nature. 

Sarah is preceded in death by her husband Bill Bourbon. Sarah is survived by two sons, Brian Bourbon of Alpine, TX. Michal Bourbon of Weir, TX, and a grandson Logan Bourbon, Alpine, TX. 

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made in her name to Terlingua CSD robotics building.

Special thanks to our trappers, who not only trap these free-roaming cats but also give their time to volunteer at the clinic to help in recovery. The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

The Terlingua Double A Bar Group will hold an AA meetings on Tuesdays from 5:00 pm to 6 pm at the Crisis Center in the Ghost Town.

School of Constructive Arts "Earthen Vaults" Workshop Taught by Master Earth Builder Jim Hallock

Receive an introduction to soil testing and compressed earth block while studying earthen roofs, arches, vaults, and domes and participating in the construction of a 10-foot span barrel vault roof. Only $150 for locals in the tri-county region, breakfast and lunch included on both days.
