Join the Sul Ross Conservation Biology Club for a viewing of the BBC Natural World documentary, The Bat Man of Mexico! This 1hr documentary narrated by David Attenborough, tells the story of  Rodrigo Medellin, president of the  Society for Conservation Biology, and Mexican ecologist and academic known for his work in the field of bat conservation.  The Bat Man of Mexico- Since he first kept vampire bats in his bathroom as a child, Rodrigo has dedicated his life to saving them. Now Mexico's most famous export, tequila, is at stake. Rodrigo's beloved lesser long-nosed bat is crucial to the liquor - pollinating the plants the drink is made from. To save both, Rodrigo must track the bats' epic migration across Mexico - braving hurricanes, snakes, Mayan tombs and seas of cockroaches. The threats are very real for not only Rodrigo and the bats, but also for anyone with a taste for tequila! This viewing is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Ominous Reason Voter Turnout was so Low
On a warm October night toward the end of the 2014 campaign, almost every politician running for a major office here in the swing state of Colorado appeared at a candidate forum in southeast Denver. The topics discussed were pressing: a potential war with ISIS, voting rights, a still-struggling economy. But one key element was in conspicuously short supply: the media.
This was increasingly the reality in much of the country, as campaigns played out in communities where the local press corps has been thinned by layoffs and newspaper closures. What if you held an election and nobody showed up to cover it? Americans have now discovered the answer: You get an election with lots of paid ads, but with little journalism, context or objective facts.
Between 2003 and 2012, the newspaper workforce decreased by 30 percent nationally, according to the American Society of Newspaper Editors. That has included a major reduction in the number of newspaper reporters assigned to cover state and local
politics. Newspaper layoffs have ripple effects for the entire local news ecosystem, because, as the Congressional Research Service noted, television, radio and online outlets often “piggyback on reporting done by much larger newspaper staffs.” Meanwhile, recent studies from the University of Chicago and the Federal Reserve Bank suggest the closure of newspapers can ultimately depress voter turnout in local elections.  Salon.com

As the Moon approaches the end of its 25th year of publication, we will be taking a look back at its storied history. This week’s Moon includes an article about the Moon from 2001 courtesy of the Big Bend Sentinel and a copy of the very first issue courtesy of the Great Oz. If you have old Moons and/or Moon anecdotes, please let us know at terlinguamoon@gmail.com so we can reprint selections in the coming weeks…

A new play premieres this week in the still-new Cinnabar Theater in Terlingua.  This is the world’s first chance to see Flambé, a comedy by Big Bend playwright Zena Zeller.  Also new for this show are several cast members who have never before appeared in a Last Minute Low Budget Productions play—Troy Sergent, Teren Williams, Clay Drinkard, and Doug Scharnberg.  Veteran performers Martha Stafford, Deena Nolan, and Scott Watkins round out the cast.  Flambé is directed by Catfish Callaway.
The schedule for Flambé will be a bit different from most productions in that the first performance will be this Thursday night, November 13, at 8 p.m. But fear not: the opening gala is still on, but for the next night, Friday, November 14, at 7 p.m. followed  by an 8 p.m. curtain time.  The only matinee performance will be on Saturday, November 15, at 2 p.m.  Two additional performances will be presented the next weekend on Friday and Saturday the 21st and 22nd.

Big Meeting of the BBCA on Nov. 12, Wed. at the CrisisCenter at 6pm. Hellos at 5:30. I will be looking forward to seeing you all. Mindy

To culminate a year of activities commemorating the 50th anniversary of The Wilderness Act, Big Bend National Park will hold a Wilderness Celebration on November 25th.
The event will exhibit activities and skills used by park staff to protect, preserve, and provide for public enjoyment of the vast undeveloped portions of the park.  Demonstrations will include mule packing, ranger horse patrol, trail building, crosscut sawing, search-and-rescue, canoeing, fossil research, leave-no-trace camping, dry-stone masonry, and other activities. The exhibition will be held in the cottonwood grove adjacent to the store at Rio Grande Village, and will be available for visitors and the public to drop by between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

I wish to thank the voters of Brewster County Commissioners’ Precinct 2 who supported me in my bid for County Commissioner in last week’s election.  Congratulations to Hugh Garrett for his successful campaign.  I am proud that the voter turnout was strong.
My goal was and continues to be the best for Brewster County’s future.  I appreciate all the help, support and votes of which I was the beneficiary.  Please continue to stay involved and vocal in your county government.

BREAKING NEWS…
“After an election tally error by Brewster County election officials was uncovered last week, it appears that Republican candidate Ruth Staton was elected county treasurer, not Democrat Della Shackelford as previously reported by the county… a meeting is taking place this evening with county election and county party officials to determine how to move forward and resolve the issue.
‘There were several other mistakes in early voting,’ Lockhart said. ‘We’re at this point trying to get that corrected.’
Despite ‘several’ mistakes, Lockhart didn’t believe any other races were affected, just the treasurer’s race.”
Reporting by the Big Bend Sentinel – see the full story at http://bigbendnow.com/2014/11/brewster-county-election-error-may-overturn-county-treasurer-race/
