Boil Water Rescind Notice
On May 18, 2017 the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) required our public water system Study Butte Water Supply Corporation, PWS ID #0220035 to issue a Boil Water Notice (BWN) to inform our customers that due to the presence of contaminants or an interruption in service, water from our system must be boiled prior to consumption. "If future generations are to remember us with gratutude rather than contempt, we must leave them something more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it." --Lyndon B. Johnson

Freddy Garcia brings GOLD MEDAL home to Terlingua!
Jesus “Freddy” Garcia earned the 1A State Championship in the Texas UIL long jump on 5/12/17.  He won in dramatic fashion as he was in third place heading into his sixth and final jump.  The jump was recorded at 22’1.5” which brought him the gold medal.  His winning jump was only 1/2 inch off the 1A record and over three inches more than the second place jumper. Not only is Freddy the first athlete to earn a State Championship for the Terlingua Big Bend Paisanos, he is the first track and field athlete to advance to the state meet! Way to represent, Freddy!

Crown Mountain Fire Update
On the morning of May 14, a wildland fire was spotted in the Juniper Canyon area of Big Bend National Park. Lightning from the previous evening is the presumed cause of ignition.
Initial response included BBNP fire crew members monitoring and assessing the fire. Additional fire resources were requested, including the Los Diablos fire crew, a hilitack crew, five hotshot crews, and a Type 3 wildland fire team.
While the fire is actively burning, the nearby Juniper Canyon trail as well as the Juniper Canyon and Pine Canyon roads and associated primitive campsites are closed. These closures are in effect for public safety. The Chisos Mountains area is also closed for logistical reasons.
Wildfires are a natural occurrence, and serve as an important tool for maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Fires break down organic matter and enrich the soil, as well as clear away dead and diseased vegetation. Fire management plans include strategies to protect visitor safety and park resources as well as fire’s potentially beneficial effects.
“We appreciate the fast response and summport from our interagency and international partners, as we work together with these fire crews to safely manage this incident,” says acting Superintendent David Larson.

Boil Water Requirement Rescinded
As of May 12, customers/consumers of water supplied by Study Butte Water Supply Corp, are no longer required to boil water prior to consumption.
The SBWSC is in the process of collecting email addresses from consumers so that they can be notified in the unlikely case that this happens again. There are three ways you can send them your email address. 1) Shoot an email to sbwsc@hotmail.com and ask to be added to the notification list; 2) contact SBWSC via their website, www.studybuttewater.com/contact-us; or 3) include your email address address when submitting a payment.
Here’s the official notice from SBWSC:
On May 9, 2017 the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) required our public water system Study Butte Water Supply Corporation, PWS ID #0220035 to issue a Boil Water Notice (BWN) to inform our customers that due to the presence of contaminants or an interruption in service, water from our system must be boiled prior to consumption.
Our system has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore adequate pressure, disinfectant levels, and/or bacteriological quality and has provided TCEQ with testing results that indicate that the water no longer requires boiling as of May 12, 2017.
If you have questions, contact Jason Blanton, SBWSC at 432-517-5000. After-hours emergency numbers are 432-517-5000, 432-244-8816 or 432-386-2628.

Brewster County Courthouse Security this week
Starting Monday, May 15, District Court will begin jury selection proceedings for an upcoming trial at 9 am in Commissioners Courtroom and will continue throughout the week. Due to safety and security precautions, only the west side main entrance of the Courthouse, which is located on 7th Street, will be used to enter and exit. Visitors and employees may only use this entrance at all times during District Court proceedings. Patrons may not use any of the side doors or east side entrance of the Courthouse to enter or exit. Signs will be posted at the various entrances for reminders.
If you have any questions, contact the County Judge’s Office at 432-837-2412.

Got a Good River Story?
The Big Bend Natural History Association (BBNHA) plans to publish an anthology of writing about the Rio Grande Wild & Scenic River (RGWSR) in celebration of the 40th anniversary of its establishment next year, and we need your help.
We’re seeking submissions including narratives (true or mostly true) of memorable river trips, essays on the natural history of the RGWSR, reports of historical or scientific research written for the general public, and/or personal or philosophical reflections on what makes the RGWSR a special place.
If you have written or would like to write something to be considered for inclusion in this anthology, or if you would like to suggest already published material that we might be able to get the right to reprint, please contact Scott Watkins at bbnha_bookkeeper@bigbendbookstore.org, 432-477-2236, or PO Box 196 BBNP 79834. And please spread the word!
The Fine Print:
BBNHA is a non-profit organization, and if your work is included, your payment will be the thrill of seeing your name in print as a published author and a couple of free copies.
Since Santa Elena is already the most written about canyon and is not part of the RGWSR, we’re looking for writing about the Rio Grande from Mariscal Canyon through the Lower Canyons.

Conenose News
The ladies from Baylor are here this week and would like to come to some of our homes and set traps (outside only) and evaluate the terrain around your property (outside only).  You can contact Melissa at 678-634-9746 if you would like them
to come by your property.

Your Wylie Water Tanks
New locals might not know that they likely need catchment to rely on for household and even drinking water.
To my knowledge, there is no one who can deliver water to your house by the truckload. Drilling a well is iffy and extremely expensive.  We are still taking orders toward a truck-load of water catchment tanks, and we are happy to advise you as to the installation, and filtration of your catchment system.  Our prices and quality (Wylie brand) are the industry gold standard.  Warrantied, sales tax free, freight free.
Call us to get specs and prices. 432-371-2506 or 512-924-2506 or elcentro432@gmail.com.

The Alpine Animal Shelter cattery is full!
There are over 30 cats of all ages, colors, and temperaments (including a dozen kittens) who need homes. Missy & Henry are especially worthy of promotion, as they are a bonded pair. Henry is 3 years old and Missy is 2 years old. They have always lived together and will not thrive if separated. The degree of their bonding is rare and will be a very special experience for whomever is lucky enough to adopt them. Missy & Henry each serve the perfect purpose in each other’s love and will be thrilled to go together to their new home. They’re bonded but not exclusive; they are happy to join another cat (or more). For more information about these two, or any animal in the Alpine shelter, please email heatherthemule@gmail.com.

FFA ANNIVERSARY!!! 40 years ago in mid May of 1977, Steve Harris & I arrived in Terlingua with an International pick up & 3 used rafts. One had no baffles, & was called Snake Boat. We had two Vietnam surplus "roller tubes" & a big frame to make an early version of a cataraft, at least 15 years before such a product was common. We called it the spider boat. 5 years later, we were running trips in New Mexico, Colorado, Alaska, Texas & Mexico. Those were good times. To celebrate, I am going to throw a party on May 13. Still making plans, but what is shaping up may be an invite only reception maybe 6-8 pm, & if you ever had anything to do with Far Flung ADVENTURES, you are invited & will honor me with your presence Then at 8 pm, Pinche Gringos will play & the public is invited. We'll probably have a couple of kegs of beer & see how long that lasts.
This is no substitute for a full scale Far Flung Adventures 40-year reunion so that the kids from New Mexico can join us. thinking late October or maybe the weekend after Chili Cook off.  Oh yeah, it will be at the Boat House, of course. If you want to attend, message me & include your email address. If you want to help out, or have any ancient FFA memorabilia, let me know.

Statement from Rep. Will Hurd: “..the American Health Care Act (AHCA) in its current form does not address the concerns of many of my constituents, including adequate protections for those with pre-existing conditions and the challenges faced by rural healthcare providers. I am unable to turn my back on these vulnerable populations because I believe we can and must do better for the American people. I will not support the AHCA in its current form and hope that we can continue making improvements to fix our broken healthcare system.” ” See his whole statement, etc. at  hurd.house.gov. [Ed.  Panther Junction and the Chisos Basin Visitor Centers will remain open every day throughout the summer where you can obtain your Junior Ranger badges, backcountry permits, entrance fees, maps, and information. We will experience daytime temperatures regularly in the 90's and 100's now until October. For a great summer trip, we recommend spending only your mornings and evenings in the lower elevations of the desert and river canyons and retreat to the mountains in the afternoon. Experiencing our exhibits and the park film at Panther Junction are fun ways you can beat the heat!

WATER WATER WATER ---'For every 1,000 sq. ft. of roof 550 gallons of collection are possible'

This is for all who wonder about roof catchment.  [This editor has four relatively small buildings with roof catchment amounting to around 1800-2000sq ft. with tanks allowing around 12,000 gallons of roof catchment.  Mostly half to ¾ full most of the time. We sometimes have water running into our tanks in fog or heavy dew…. 10 inches (+or-) every year and a careful frugal life style…. NOTE:I do CRY when the tanks overflow……!!].
