Originally from Chicago, Father Mike was raised in the Jewish tradition. He took a detour along the way and has been an Episcopal priest since 1978. Father Mike has served in seven Episcopal schools in four states, the most recent being Canterbury Episcopal School in DeSoto, Texas. Fr. Mike has also served in diocesan staff positions in Chicago and served in long-time supply and Interim positions in many churches. In addition, he served as chaplain at Kennedy Airport, worked with youth in juvenile detention and various specialty camps. Additionally he has served as spiritual director, and provided spiritual mentoring for those who feel called to ordained ministry. Father Mike met his wife Susan in college and they have been married for 44 years. Susan has a Masters degree in learning differences. She has worked one on one with students from kindergarten to college. They have two grown sons who currently live in Austin, and have two dogs named Waffles and Obadiah to fill their empty nest. Father Mike enjoys serving our Lord and is looking forward to being in beautiful West Texas.

This Sunday is the next "Singaround" at the La Kiva Cave Room, from 5 - 7 pm. Bring your voices and acoustics to share with our circle of unplugged singers and players. June Rapp and Mary Diesel are hosting two more sessions - this Sunday and April 15th.

TERLINGUA RECYCLES . There will NOT be a trip this Thursday 3/29/18 into the BBNP Recycling Center. We forgot about Easter/ Passover Weekend SO the next run will be the following week - 4/5/18.  Please don't meet us at the Terlingua Recycles station behind the Terlingua EMS station at 8 a.m. on the 29th unless you'd like to help us compress plastic cartons, cardboard, etc. With the continuous influx of visitors and new residents, we really need to be mindful of Stop. Drop. and Roll. i.e. STOP - if a bin is full; DROP - is there anything you can do about it if bins at capacity (hint: take it with you and come back the following week) ?; ROLL - pack tighter and add your items if room permits, or roll away until the next Tuesday or Wednesday, before the next (THURSDAY) haul into the park. .We would LOVE your assistance the following Thursday as we take an already to-capacity haul. Thanks and happy GREEN Spring. If you've got questions about recycling, where volunteers are needed, who's on first etc., please call 830.739.6986. Thanks!!!

TERLINGUA MOON
March 20, 2018
Vol. 29 No. 12
Edited by Cactus Jane

As long as we are not chased from our words we have nothing to fear. As long as our utterances keep their sound we have a voice. As long as our words keep their sense we have a soul. — Edmond Jabes

Welcome to the Moon. Thanks for landing, share freely.

FROM ELENA HARRIS: Howdy folks, anyone remember Jo Momma and Zero Kempf my grandparents, from the good old days? Well I'm back in the ghost town, at their old home on Kempf Rd and wanted to put it out there that I am the person living there and am starting to get the RV park/campground going again "jomommas." Right now we can handle couples RVing or camping nightly. Power is on but waiting on water. Just saying hi.

IN MEMORY OF RUTH JANSYN: Besides a legacy of service to our community, Ruth left a large body of her photography of the Big Bend. On Saturday, March 31, from 4 - 7 pm, Terlingua Visual Arts will hold a sale of her framed and matted works. The sale will be held in front of the Forever Resorts conference rooms (near the Motor Inn laundromat). All proceeds will be donated to local groups in which Ruth was involved. Please take this last opportunity to have one or more of Ruth's creations and support your community.

RENOWNED COSMOLOGIST STEPHEN HAWKING passed away peacefully at his Cambridge, United Kingdom home March 14, at the age of 76. He once wrote, “There could be whole antiworlds and antipeople made out of antiparticles. However, if you meet your antiself, don’t shake hands! You would both vanish in a great flash of light.”

BURN BAN IS ON COUNTY WIDE. Outdoor burning of trash, debris, and brush is PROHIBITED including Terlingua. Go to the end of this MOON for the order.

NOTICE FROM BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK. Charcoal ban in effect until further notice. There is a park-wide ban on charcoal use due to high fire danger. The use of propane cook stoves, gas grills, or similar, is allowed. Please use extreme caution with any heat source.

COMMISSIONERS COURT REGULAR MEETING Wed. March 21 at 9 a.m. See agenda here:  http://www.brewstercountytx.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Agenda-March-21-2018.pdf

FROM BREWSTER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE. BCSO would like to work with interested homeowners to assist in crime prevention and prosecution. Over the next few days, BCSO will implement a program to sign-up property owners and businesses who have security cameras on their property, so the Sheriff's Office will have their contact information. This program will allow law enforcement to contact individuals with cameras in an area where a crime has been committed, and possibly utilize the footage to further the investigation. A simple contact form will be provided to anyone interested. This information will not be disclosed to anyone outside of law enforcement and does not grant access to the security cameras without the property owner’s authorization. Similar programs have been very successful in deterring and solving crimes across the country. If you are interested in taking part in this program, BCSO will provide more information in the coming days. Participation is not required.  (432)837-3488.

LAST MINUTE LOW BUDGET PRODUCTIONS. This week the Board of Directors welcomed new member, Nancy Faubion. LMLBP is nearly moved into its storage building, with most costumes in garment bags. The bent-over sign has been taken down, soon to be re-erected and well-braced. Work is being done to seal off access from critters, as well as add foundation slabs for two donated swamp coolers. All of the above-mentioned work is being done by Antonio Guerrero. LMLBP is moving forward with plans to put in a septic system and build a restroom, as funds allow. LMLBP is always looking for directors and actors. The facility is there to be used! The Cinnabar is available for performances, recitals, concerts, classes, anything that needs a stage with a lot of lights and seating for about 60 people.  If you know of a need like that, please be in touch with LMLBP.

DARK Skies
Have a business, nightly rental, RV park or planning on developing in Terlingua/Big Bend? Remember that good lighting will keep us on the map as an ultimate destination for stargazers. Astrotourism is important to the economy in the Big Bend and light pollution is threatening that.

DARK Skies
Contact me or stop by Barton Warnock Visitor Center to find out more about good lighting practices or how you can help promote dark sky preservation in Terlingua and surrounding communities in the Big Bend.  Amber Harrison   432-424-332

"They say no laws could have prevented the hundreds of senseless tragedies that have occurred. We call BS. That us kids don't know what we're talking about, that we're too young to understand how the government works. We call BS. If you agree, register to vote. Vote. Contact your local congress people. Give them a piece of your mind." Emma Gonzalez

“If you are bored and disgusted by politics and don't bother to vote, you are in effect voting for the entrenched Establishments of the two major parties, who please rest assured are not dumb, and who are keenly aware that it is in their interests to keep you disgusted and bored and cynical and to give you every possible reason to stay at home doing one-hitters and watching MTV on primary day. By all means stay home if you want, but don't BS yourself that you're not voting. In reality, there is no such thing as not voting: you either vote by voting, or you vote by staying home and tacitly doubling the value of some Diehard's vote.” David Foster Wallace,

"Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting." -- Franklin D. Roosevelt

When you go to the polls to vote, present one of the seven (7) acceptable forms of photo ID:
·       Texas Driver License issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
·       Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
·       Texas Personal Identification Card issued by DPS
·       Texas Handgun License issued by DPS
·       United States Military Identification Card containing the person’s photograph
·       United States Citizenship Certificate containing the person’s photograph
·       United States Passport (book or card)
With the exception of the U.S. Citizenship Certificate, which does not expire, for voters aged 18-69, the acceptable form of photo identification may be expired no more than four years before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place. For voters aged 70 or older, the acceptable form of photo identification may be expired for any length of time if the identification is otherwise valid.
If you do not possess an acceptable form of photo identification and cannot reasonably obtain one, you may present a supporting form of ID (one of which is your valid voter registration certificate) and execute a Reasonable Impediment Declaration, noting your reasonable impediment to obtaining an acceptable form of photo identification, stating that the information contained in the declaration is true, that you are the same individual personally appearing at the polling place to sign the declaration, and that you face a reasonable impediment to procuring an acceptable form of photo identification. An election official will match your name to the official list of registered voters.
For voters that applied for and received the permanent exemption from showing a photo ID based in their disability status, this status will be notated on their voter registration certificate. These voters are required to present their voter registration certificate when they go to the polls to vote.

Reduce Reuse Recycle - The landfill in Brewster County can accept 20 tons of waste per day. That seems like a very large number but it’s actually not enough for the amount of waste we are trying to put in there.  The haulers regularly have to dump in Presidio County or Odessa landfills because the local landfill has reached its daily max. With more people moving here every day, higher numbers of visitors and the proposed import tariffs on aluminum and steel, there’s never been a better time to start recycling. You can recycle at the South County Services Building in Study Butte, another option is the recycling pickup service that will pick up and sort for you or if you’re headed to Alpine, you can bring your items to the Hal Flanders Recycling Center. Then there is the Terlingua Recycles station right behind the Terlingua EMS on 170. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Terlingua Recycles! Thanks to the great group of volunteers who came out and helped make light(er) work of a load of recycling. Just as the landfill is reaching capacity, so are the recycling bins. It’s terrific that folks are being mindful of the need to recycle, if you’d take it a step further and be sure to clean the tin/ aluminum/ plastic, etc. before dropping them off and break down items as much as possible (crush plastic milk and water cartons, etc.). We take the recycling bins to BBNP the last Thursday of every month. Call 830.739.6986 for more information or send us a message on Terlingua Recycle’s Facebook page. But you can just show up at the Recycling Center, too. Located right behind the Terlingua EMS station. We leave the center around 8 a.m. and return around noon.

“The notion of following your passion is worth indulging. Your passion is your source of power. To live really a full life, you need to follow where it leads...in defiance of all things conventional perhaps. And of course, it has its price. You have to know that going in. But the price you pay, in my opinion, is not worth the time of day to think about. It is so important not to knee pad around the world. You should never bow down to anything but those you love and respect. Ever for anything.” Doug Peacock
