Terlingua Moon
July 30, 2018
Volume 29 - #31

 “Do each of these things for a half-hour at least once a day and you’re sure to have a healthy, happy life. Get the blood really pumping. Let the sun shine directly on your skin. Express yourself to someone. Be creative. Stretch. Close your eyes and breathe deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth while letting your mind rest. Think of the good things in your life. Turn off the cellphone and close the computer. Go for a walk. Write something down . . . anything.
Mark Dean Kneeskern

From U.S. Representative Will Hurd(TX-23).  Representative Hurd joined Natural Resources Chairman Rob Bishop (UT-01), Energy and Water Development Subcommittee Chairman Mike Simpson (ID-02) and Ranking Member Raul Grijalva (AZ-03) to introduce the Restore Our Parks & Public Lands Act to jump start overdue maintenance projects in our national parks by directing 50% of unallocated federal mineral revenues to a newly established restoration fund. This bipartisan consensus proposal would provide investments that would go toward reducing the nearly $12 billion backlog the National Park Service (NPS) faces to repair roads, visitor facilities, trails, and other park structures. Similar legislation was previously introduced by Senators Rob Portman (R-OH), Mark Warner (D-VA), Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Angus King (I-ME) in the Senate.

“National parks are a part of the American experience and the eight I represent, including Big Bend and the San Antonio Missions, provide immeasurable cultural, environmental and economic benefits. We have a responsibility as a nation to care for these natural treasures, yet in 2017 alone, national parks in Texas had a backlog of over $167 million in deferred maintenance – nearly 75 percent of projects are in the 23rd District of Texas,” said Hurd. “This bill provides more flexible financing options and revenue sources to jump start these overdue maintenance projects, so that our parks can remain beautiful and accessible for future generations of park goers to enjoy. I am thankful to Chairman Bishop, Chairman Simpson and Ranking Member Grijalva for our continued conversations to ensure we work together, in a bipartisan manner, to fix this problem.”

 “>From San Antonio Missions National Historical Park to Big Bend National Park, our National Park Service protects some of our most historically, culturally and naturally significant places. Yet, due to years of inconsistent funding, our parks face nearly $12 billion in needed repairs from failing water systems to deteriorated trails and crumbling visitor centers. NPCA commends national park champions like Congressman Hurd, for supporting dedicated funding for our parks. With the Restore our Parks and Public Lands Act, Congress is one step closer to ensuring that our parks can continue to provide safe conditions for visitors, while also protecting the resources that help tell our nation’s history.” said Theresa Pierno, President and CEO for National Parks Conservation Association.

“The effort to find a compromise to fix our parks is not only bipartisan; now it is also bicameral,” said Marcia Argust, who directs The Pew Charitable Trusts’ restore America’s parks campaign.“Pew applauds Representative Rob Bishop and his colleagues for collaborating on this proposal, which combines the best of the parks deferred-maintenance bills and provides significant and consistent funding to address the backlog.”

 Last year, Texas National Parks had a backlog of $167,667,569 in deferred maintenance projects, including the following amounts at parks located in the 23rd District of Texas:
·      $100,421,335 at Big Bend National Park;
·      $6,937,728 at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park;
·      $7,031,046 at Amistad National Recreational Area;
·      $2,810,717 at Fort Davis National Historic Site;
·      $6,411,208 at Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

This bill represents the merging of several approaches to address this important issue. Last year, Rep. Hurd introduced similar bipartisan legislation, the National Park Service Legacy Act, which was critical in bringing together stakeholders from both parties and chambers to ultimately find a solution that can be passed by Congress and signed into law.
===============

The notion of following your passion is worth indulging. Your passion is your source of power. To live really a full life, you need to follow where it leads...in defiance of all things conventional perhaps. And of course, it has its price. You have to know that going in. But the price you pay, in my opinion, is not worth the time of day to think about. It is so important not to knee pad around the world. You should never bow down to anything but those you love and respect. Ever for anything.” Doug Peacock

FOR YOU MERCHANTS/AIRBNB FOLKS

Here are some tips on taking checks and avoiding getting burned by the hot ones. NO out of state checks, EVER. Write on the check the person’s TEXAS driver’s license number and their DATE OF BIRTH. Without BOTH of those pieces of info, it’s hard to go after them. When you get a bad check, come see me at the J.P. office and I’ll give you some additional paperwork and you might (no guarantee) get your money. Jim Burr

TERLINGUA MOON
July 2, 2018 ~ Volume  29 ~ #27

by Million sMiles

When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won.
There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it--always.

This week at La Kiva:
We hope everyone has a wonderful Fourth of July, and to celebrate the event we will be offering drinks specials - Black Velvet and Paloma.
Introducing new weekly Pizza Specials on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Fish & Chips are still a great favorite and our Steaks are spectacular.  Provoleta Argentina is very popular and for a light meal, Mushrooms stuffed with crab in a cream sauce are excellent.
Wednesday, Fourth of July, Tim Relleva will be playing his wonderful guitar music.
Thursday, Chet O'Keefe will be playing his amazing original songs and guitar music.
Friday and Saturday, we will have Karaoke.

An appeal to all our friends who might remember.  When we first came to BBNP in 1982, winter camping in The Basin, we came across a lot of $1 bills with "La Kiva" stamped on them in blue.  We were told that this had been done by Gill Felts who had recently opened a new bar in Terlingua called "La Kiva" and we must go there.  We did, and after that, every time we visited this area we came to La Kiva and were enchanted.  Knowing how people like to hang on to interesting memorabilia, I wonder if anyone out there still can find one of these bills.  We would love to have one framed in the bar, to add to the other reminders of the spectacular past surrounding La Kiva.  We think it would really add to the atmosphere and remind everyone of the very special imagination of a very special man.

Eight candidates have filed for the July 31 special election to replace former state Sen. Carlos Uresti, D-San Antonio, — including his brother, outgoing state Rep. Tomas Uresti, according to the secretary of state's office.
The deadline was 5 p.m. Monday, and among the eight candidates who filed, there are four Democrats, three Republicans and one Libertarian. The candidates had a short window to file — Gov. Greg Abbott announced the special election five days ago.
The contest will determine who will fill the seat of Carlos Uresti, who resigned Thursday after being found guilty earlier this year of 11 felonies related to fraud and money laundering. Uresti is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday.
The list of candidates includes two prominent Democrats who were already running for Carlos Uresti's seat before he resigned: state Rep. Roland Gutierrez of San Antonio and former U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego of Alpine. The fourth Democrat who filed is Charlie Urbina Jones, a Poteet attorney who unsuccessfully ran for Texas' 23rd Congressional District in the 1990s.
The three Republicans who filed are Pete Flores, who unsuccessfully challenged Carlos Uresti in 2016; Jesse "Jay" Alaniz, the former president of the Harlandale ISD board; and Carlos Antonio Raymond, who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for House District 117 in March. The Libertarian candidate is Tony Valdivia, a senior reporting analyst at USAA Bank.
The winner of the special election will finish Carlos Uresti's term, which ends January 2021. Early voting begins July 16.
