Terlingua MOON

March 26, 2019
Vol.  30   No. 13
by Million sMiles

One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bast*rds.
― Edward Abbey

Announcing Sotol Festival 2019! Join us as we celebrate the indigenous distilled spirit of the Chihuahuan Desert at La Kiva Restaurant and Bar in Terlingua, Texas and Boquillas, Coahuila, MX on April 12-13.
At this one-of-a-kind, binational festival you will have the opportunity to try many brands of sotol and meet the sotoleros who produce it, along with on-site camping, live music, local vendors and more. On Friday, April 12, the festivities begin at La Kiva Restaurant and Bar, with live music from some of the best Terlingua local musicians. Saturday morning we're taking the party across the Río Grande from Big Bend National Park to our favorite town in México, Boquillas, for an authentic experience and to celebrate the unity, peace, dignity, and respect that we enjoy daily here in our piece of the borderland.  On Saturday night, the party reconvenes at La Kiva for more live music from the Pinche Gringos, The Doodlin' Hogwallops, and headliners, Mike & The Moonpies – and, of course, more sotol tasting!
Admission to Sotol Festival 2019 is free, and campsites are available to reserve now at www.sotolfestival.com. SUPER MOON ON SPRING EQUINOX.  🌕  The March full Moon is particularly special because it peaks the same day as Spring Equinox, March 20.  The last time the full Moon and Spring Equinox coincided this closely (4 hours apart) was March 2000.  The last time they occurred on the same date was March 20, 1981!  This full Moon is a supermoon, meaning the Moon will be at its closest to Earth for the month of March.  It’s the year’s third (and final) of three straight full supermoons.  This means that the Moon may “appear” brighter and bigger than normal, provided the night sky is clear and dark.

MISSING PERSON ALERT.  From mother of missing daughter:  Margaret is 24 and has lost her wallet with ID and debit card and forgot her phone at a friend's house.  She's usually an experienced traveler but seems to be going through a rough patch.  She called her mom from Big Bend National Park on Feb. 11, but the call dropped.  The phone she called from answers with a computer tone.  She was seen in Presidio on Feb. 19:  a city police officer stopped her and told her it's illegal to be out and about without an ID -- and that's it.  Family hasn’t seen her since.  Please keep an eye out for her and circulate attached flyer.

DOGGO OF THE WEEK.  Finnie is a sweet, loving 12 year-old Beagle mix.  She gets along with just about everyone, except for cats and chickens!  All jokes aside, Finnie would be excellent in a family with children and gets along well with other dogs.  She is house broken and leash trained, as well as very social.  Finnie is spayed, fully vaccinated and available for adoption thru Jethro Homeward Bound Pets.  To meet this gal or any of other dogs and cats we have available, please check us out on PetFinder.com or send an email

The March full Moon is particularly special because it reaches its peak on the same day as the spring equinox, on March 20, 2019. The last time the full Moon and the spring equinox coincided this closely (4 hours apart) was in March 2000, but the last time they occurred on the same date was on March 20, 1981!  This full Moon is also a supermoon, meaning the Moon will be nearly at its closest to Earth for the month of March. It’s the year’s third (and final) of three straight full supermoons. This means that the Moon may “appear” brighter and bigger than normal, provided the night sky is clear and dark.

Donnie Daniels hasn’t found the rumored five feet tall blue bonnets but this one straightens out to almost 50 inches. And Editor’s Note: Keep your eyes open for weird colored Bluebonnets.

Dog of the week: Wiggles! is a healthy, playful 1-year old hound mix. She is very grateful for being in a foster home and lights up with excitement every time she gets to go for a walk. Wiggles is very affectionate and always "on the job" as a watch dog. She enjoys meeting new people and would do good in a home with kids with proper training. Wiggles would do best in a feline-free home, she seems a bit too curious about chasing cats. She is fully vaccinated, neutered and ready for her forever family! For more information or to meet this very sweet girl, email mmwesttx@yahoo.com.

As if we didn’t know ... !
Spring Break To Be Busy at Big Bend Nat’l. Park
Large numbers of visitors historically travel to Big Bend National Park during spring break, a typical vacation away from school. As travelers seek solace from stressful educational routines, and escape wintry conditions, the park experiences increases in visitation to the point of periodic congestion. Fall and winter rains have also resulted in spectacular spring flowers, attracting abundant desert enthusiasts. Chief of Interpretation Tom VandenBerg said,  “If the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend is any indication, our expectations are for an extremely busy spring break this year, which is anticipated to extend through the month of March.”
The busiest time during spring break this year will be March 7 through 24, when most of the Texas public schools and universities are scheduled to be closed for the break.
During the extended Spring Break period, the demand for campsites and overnight lodging will be far greater than the number of campsites and rooms available within the park. All campgrounds and primitive campsites have already been filling each day by late morning. Backcountry permits are required for backpacking and primitive campsites. Permits may be obtained in person up to 24 hours in advance at the Panther Junction (8:30a-5:00p) and Chisos Basin (8:30a-4:00p) Visitor Centers.
Visitors seeking lodging without reservations may have difficulty finding a room. The Chisos Mountains Lodge, the only lodging facility in the park, reports that few reservations are available. A fortunate few may be able to take advantage of last-minute cancellations. Potential visitors should call the lodge at (432) 477-2291 for more information. Additional camping facilities, RV parks, and lodging are located in communities outside the park. Reservations should be made in advance.
“March is a fantastic time to visit, but also the busiest month of the year in the park, and many visitors are both surprised and disappointed when campsites are not available,” continued VandenBerg. “We wish to encourage people to also visit during other times of the year to maximize
enjoyment of Big Bend, and the remote sense of peacefulness that it is known for.”
