The Boquillas Port of Entry is staffed by National Park Service personnel who can assist travelers with information about visiting the area.

Bike Fest Draws Crowd to Big Bend
The Big Bend drew more than 400 cyclists for the annual Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest Feb 11-13.
According to the Big Bend Ranch State Park Superintendent Barrett Durst, the event was a hit. Rain and snow in the area made for muddy conditions on Thursday, but by Friday trails were clear as cyclists hit trails.
Events like these are a boon to the local economy.
“When you have 500-600 people coming in with their family, it’s a good shot of influx for the economy of south Brewster County,” Durst said. “It’s really good for this area down here.”
The Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest is just one of many outdoor opportunities the big bend region has to offer.

Big Bend Education Corporation News
The Big Bend Education Corporation (BBEC) was formed to raise money to build a high school  for students from the Terlingua and San Vicente school districts. A three-member board was formed, fund raising activities were held, donation and grant money was collected, and the high school was built. Other projects were completed including the school/community library. More recently a multi-purpose track and sports area has been started. There is also an account - the Joee May Barnes Scholarship fund - which awards scholarships to some graduating seniors each year.
The board has traditionally included two members from Terlingua and one from the park. Offices are President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer. These duties often rotate among the members. Right now the vice-president position is vacant, and the secretary-treasurer position will soon be vacant.
The immediate challenge for the BBEC is to straighten things out with the state and regain its legal status, which has been suspended because some necessary paperwork was not filed when due.
Anyone interested in filling one of these board positions is invited to contact either of the current board members: Claudia Arnberger (477-1108; claudia_arnberger@nps.gov) or Ginny Carrico (371-2882). You don’t have to have kids, have kids in school, or anything like that - just an interest in the community, a concern for the welfare of both schools, and a willingness to contribute your time and energy. There will also be a meeting this Saturday, Feb. 21, at 10 am at the high school for those who are interested or would like to know more.

VETERANS and veteran caregivers
A free special presentation on a federally funded support program for Veterans “Veterans Caregiver Program” will be held at the American Legion off Hwy 118 on Feb. 23 at 4:30 pm on the patio (unless weather conditions move it indoors). For more information call 979-218-3769.

There have been several disparaging comments about the moon in the last few months.  This editor would like to suggest that these folks start their own paper if THE TERLINGUA MOON is not to their liking.

Namaste y’all!

Sunday, February 8, 2015

To: PARENTS, TEACHERS, RESIDENTS OF BREWSTER COUNTY AND THE TERLINGUA SCHOOL DISTRICT. There is an urgency that the public make firm plans to attend the next school board meeting. It might just be the most important one ever held at TCSD. No matter if you have never come before; no matter if you do not plan to attend another. Especially if you have felt intimidated into not attending in the past. No matter whether you have children in this school, or your children are past school age. And, even if you have no children at all. And, especially if you have transferred your children out of this school, or are homeschooling. Wed. evening, February 11th, at 5:p.m. in the BB High school conference room.

TERLINGUA MOON
Vol 26.  No. 5
February 3, 2015

"Aerial surveillance of a supposedly free citizenry is an affront to us all, and one more significant step toward an authoritarian police state. There are far better ways to prevent crime than by sending Big Brother aloft to keep his beady 450-watt eye on us dues-paying citizens."
~Edward Abbey

A chance for less-celebrated styles of traditional dance music, and  more familiar southern, old-time tunes. On a share, free basis. This is a shout-out to Terlingua Can you host a fiddler who's traveled from afar? offer dry camping, donate a few sticks of firewood for the campfire, offer to loan a canoe to a fiddler's family? Some will be wee folk.
