Alpine Animal Shelter - This bio is also a confession from his biographer. Bruno is a big boy – even in his dramatically underweight condition – and he is extremely eager to get out of his kennel. But don’t be fooled like I almost was: his kennel self is very different than his out-of-the-kennel self. Away from the shelter, Bruno is a gentle, curious galumph who would like to cover your entire face in one swipe of his enormous tongue. Bruno hasn't enjoyed much attention or consistent training but the door is wide open for someone to encourage him to be a model pet. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on all shots. A Doberman-mixed-with-something big, he will probably weigh 100 lbs. All Alpine shelter animals are online at https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=TX1202 and for more info, email heatherthemule@gmail.com

First June Solstice Full Moon in Decades
In 2016, a full Moon, also commonly known as Strawberry Moon, coincided with the June Solstice. The 2 events haven't occurred on the same day since 1967 and will not coincide again until 2062.  'Solstice' (Latin: 'solstitium') means 'sun-stopping'. The point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set, stops and reverses direction after this day.
On the solstice, the sun does not rise precisely in the east, but rises to the north of east and sets to the north of west, meaning it's visible in the sky for a longer period of time.
Although the June solstice marks the first day of astronomical summer, it's more common to use meteorological definitions of seasons, making the solstice midsummer or midwinter.
Over the centuries, the June solstice has inspired countless festivals, midsummer celebrations and religious holidays. One of the world's oldest evidence of the Summer Solstice's importance in culture is Stonehenge in England, a megalithic structure which clearly marks the moment of the June Solstice.

Summer is here finally and with the high daytime temperatures is also a risk of exposure to very high Ultra Violet radiation.    We receive High UV Warnings almost daily here in the Big Bend.
A UV Index reading of 6 to 7 means high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. Protection against skin and eye damage is needed. Reduce time in the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If outdoors, seek shade and wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

Also, drink plenty of water and stay hydrated!

Full Moon Pot Luck
THIS MONTH FULL MOON POT LUCK
  IS A  TRIPLE CELEBRATION !!!
    JUNE STRAWBERRY or ROSE MOON
    CARRIE COX’S BIRTHDAY !!
    SUMMER SOLSTICE
WHEW !!! LOTS of ENERGY GOING ON HERE !!
Come on out to Jackass Flats June 20th 7:30
for FOOD, FUN and VISITING .........
Bring a dish, or music and a chair ....
The month of June’s Full Moon’s name is the Full Strawberry Moon. June’s Full Strawberry Moon got its name because the Algonquin tribes knew it as a signal to gather ripening fruit.
It was often known as the Full Rose Moon in Europe (where strawberries aren’t native).
Honoring the solstice can remind us just how precious each day and season is, because the truth of its passing away is also acknowledged. Gifts need to be appreciated, not taken for granted. Some will use their religious ritual to raise energy for healing, for re-aligning and redressing environmental wrongs, or for strengthening the sense of being part of nature, not set apart and individual, but interconnected in a larger whole, including the past, present and future. Such is the power of participating in the turning of the wheel of the year.

If you think our students are spending too much time preparing for and taking too many high-pressure tests, here’s a chance to make your voice heard.
AUSTIN - The State Board of Education (SBOE) is issuing a survey in English and Spanish to seek public input about the state’s current assessment and accountability programs and gather suggestions for future program development. The survey will be open online to all Texans through June 30.
The information gathered from the survey and the Community Conversations will be compiled into a report and presented to the SBOE for its consideration at its July 19-22 meeting. Once adopted, the report will be provided to legislative leaders and the Texas Commission on Next Generation Assessments and Accountability.
The 15-member commission, created by the Texas Legislature, is to make recommendations for statutory changes to the state’s assessment and accountability systems. The commission report is to be submitted to the governor and legislature by Sept. 1.
The survey is available in English at http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2762440/State-Assessments-and-Accountability-Survey and in Spanish at http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2851839/Encuesta-de-evaluaciones-y-responsabilidad-educativa-del-estado.

TERLINGUA MOON
Vol 27. No. 23
June 7 , 2016

“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” ~John Muir

Brewster County Commissioners Court held a called meeting on Tuesday May 31, 2016 at 9:00 A.M..  After a brief Executive Session, Commissioner’s Court voted unanimously to accept the Consent Decree and Order as presented and authorize Brewster County Judge, Eleazar Cano, to sign the Order.  The Consent Decree and Order was drafted in response to pending litigation styled as Freedom From Religion Foundation  et al. v Brewster County, Texas et al.  The Consent Decree shall not be construed as an admission of liability and is entered solely to resolve the claims brought forth in this lawsuit and to rectify claimed constitutional violations associated with the display at issue in this lawsuit.  Brewster County’s insurance carrier has agreed to pay legal fees and costs related to the suit and nominal damages ($1.00 ea.) to the two Plaintiffs..

BREWSTER COUNTY CLEAN-UP DAY - SATURDAY, JUNE 18th
Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up that Brewster County has plans for a Clean-Up Day (Dump Day) on Saturday, June 18 from 10am-3pm at the Brewster County Yard located on FM-170 (River Road). The Solid Waste Management Grant we received in April for the Clean-Up Day and Scrap Tire Disposal has a performance period that ends in July, so we must get it done!
The County will be using a grant-funded cargo trailer we received last year for the Scrap Tire Disposal Project to collect all your scrap tires. We will also be accepting most all waste that the Alpine Land-Fill takes. However, no hazardous materials including asbestos and batteries can be accepted, and any appliance using freon must be certified that the freon has been removed and the freon disposed of properly before the County will accept it.
Brewster County will follow-up with more information regarding the Brewster County Clean-up Day in the media and on the county website.
Hugh Garrett, Commissioner
Brewster County Precinct 2
