Awe is the moment when ego surrenders to wonder. This is our inheritance - the beauty before us. We cry. We cry out. There is nothing sentimental about facing the desert bare. It is a terrifying beauty.”

Summer drinks are arriving by the TRUCKLOAD!!! Lone Star has the newest addition to the Hard Seltzer Craze and they chose to do it right ....with Blue Agave Nectar! Yep, you read that right, these new Hard Seltzers are sweetened with Blue Agave Nectar. Two flavors - Agave Lime and Agave Watermelon.

And the fun does not stop there. We also brought in Bacardi Canned Cocktails that we had a very fun tasting party for. These babies won full staff approval. Rum Punch, Mojito (that Jana says pass the test!), and Limon y Lemonade. Oh, and Cazadores Margaritas with Orange Liqueur - in yummy regular or SPICY. These Margaritas ain’t no sissy fake ‘Rita’s. Nope .... they are muy sabroso! The supply was limited for the rollout - DO NOT WAIT or you will miss them.

We are open Monday thru Saturday 10-9. As always - PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY

If you own or operate a nightly rental(s) in the Big Bend and are interested in giving your guests an opportunity to participate in a brief survey about the importance of protecting dark skies in the Big Bend, a form is available to place in your rentals. It's a short poll, just four questions, and can help gather data about how many of our visitors come here specifically to enjoy our night skies. To request a printable pdf form, email rreadydog@hotmail.com. Included will be instructions about how to submit the data you help to collect.

Earth and Fire Gallery

We are pleased to welcome to the Gallery, our Guest Artist, Richard D. Curtin.

" Inspired by the austere landscape, this city boy is mesmerized by the west Texas wide-open spaces and the shapes the sun creates by bathing the objects below, even the clouds cast shadows! The mountains miles away or the cactus at my feet, the inspiration for my painting is right in front of me.

Having graduated with a BFA from Auburn University and after a very successful entertainment career, I return to my passion of painting and earned an MA from Sul Ross State University in my semi-retirement in my new home of Alpine, Texas.  Reigniting my passion and artistic style with an emphasis on the landscape, its inhabitants and its manmade elements telling stories of how we coexist with nature and its beauty.

Like the cow in the desert, I am so happy in my new environment under the huge sky enjoying the sun, the clouds during the day and the abundance of stars at night.  What I see around me keeps me looking up, smiling and painting."

Thank you all for coming out to the town hall meeting on Saturday to learn about dark sky efforts in the Big Bend. It was really positive and I appreciated the opportunity to hear everyone's perspectives, I learned a lot.  Over the next several months, if things continue to improve with the pandemic, I am going to slowly start reviving the Terlingua Dark Sky Alliance (part of Big Bend Citizen's Alliance). The town hall was a great start and lets me know that the community is behind this initiative.

For starters, here is the link to the International Dark Sky Association website.  https://www.darksky.org/

- As we discussed, you will find printable brochures under the Resources tab. You can print them yourselves or they will send out free brochures if you ask.

Thanks again and it was great to see so many faces in person!

Let me know if you have any questions.

“Governments are different, and philosophies are different, but when it comes down to it, a schoolteacher is a schoolteacher is a schoolteacher. A butcher is a butcher is a butcher. We are people. And we are far more common than we ever imagine.”
Craig Mazin

FIREFIGHTERS AIDED BY WEATHER  An increase in cooler temperatures and higher humidity has significantly paused growth of the South Rim 4 fire over the past 24 hours to 1,341 acres and 60% containment.  Because there are no control lines in the rocky country, it will take at least several days of monitoring and "cold trailing" to check for hot spots, to increase further containment numbers.

Update:  Big Bend Fire Suppression Evolves to Repair  Crews Work to Clear Trails, Assess Fire Impacts.  With increased success in fire containment and no growth in fire acreage, firefighters at Big Bend National Park have changed the focus from fire suppression to rehabilitation of damaged areas and repair.

Updated UpdateSOUTH RIM FIREFIGHTERS CONTINUE TO MAKE PROGRESS.  Hotspots remain in Boot Canyon and Juniper Canyon areas, but the size of the South Rim Fire continues to hold at 1,341 acres with containment at 60%.  Hotshot crews will demobilize today (4/19/21), but the Diablos will remain on the scene.  Fire personnel will continue to monitor the fire area and aid with rehabilitation of damaged areas.  Bucket drops by helicopter will continue as needed.

To view the full news releases, please visit the Big Bend National Park news release page:  https://www.nps.gov/bibe/learn/news/newsreleases.htm.

Town Hall Meeting  Brewster County Commissioner Sara Allen Colando will hold a town hall meeting on Saturday, April 24th 11:00 AM at the Red Pattillo Community Center to answer questions about Dark Sky Preservation measures in the tri-county area.  We'll be focusing on the County's outdoor lighting ordinance, the recent debate over legislation to amend the tax code, and what "dark sky friendly" lighting practices look like.  If the weather is nice, we'll stay outside on the Community Center front porch.  If we have to move the meeting inside, mask wearing is recommended per CDC guidelines.  I hope to see you there!

Be thoughtful  Many of us share a dumpster and their fees.  Costs are going up on everything imaginable.  Be mindful of the honest, proportional sharing of your cost in relation to your allotment of dumpster space.  Simply put: If you know 5 people are sharing, DO NOT take more than 1/5th of the dumpster space in a total week's time; from Thursday to Thursday.  Be considerate; play fair.

Broadband Survey  Are you tired of unreliable internet - or no internet at all!?  Connected Nation Texas and the Tri-County Broadband Initiative (Brewster, Presidio, and Jeff Davis Counties) are conducting an assessment of the current broadband environment to determine usage, access, and needs of our communities.  The survey responses will be used to inform a local technology action plan to improve the broadband infrastructure of the tri-county area. Find your county and complete the survey online here:  linktr.ee/riocog.

Wylie Tanks. The current, pending order is CANCELLED. The home company increased prices without warning last Friday afternoon, and will not honor the prices already quoted. Further, they plan yet an additional price hike in the next couple of weeks or so. Maybe they want to put a dealership down here; who knows?

After burning for five days, the South Rim Fire has grown to 863 acres and extended through much of the “sky island” of the high Chisos Mountains. Dark Skies Proposed Bill HB 4305.
A pristine night sky is significant to the Big Bend region’s economy and culture. Without it, a big part of the draw would be gone.
As we grow, we run the risk of losing this precious resource. HB 4305 allows usage of the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) on efforts to preserve dark skies in Far West Texas.
Under HB 4305, municipalities in Presidio and Brewster counties could use revenue from the municipal hotel occupancy tax “for the promotion and preservation of dark skies through construction and maintenance of infrastructure and the purchase and installation of hardware that reduces light pollution and sky glow.” They could improve city or county lighting, or fund projects to improve lighting on private businesses or residences.
If you support this bill or want to learn more, please attend the next County Commissioners meeting or submit a letter of support to the Big Bend Dark Sky Alliance (Big Bend Citizens Alliance) at bigbenddarksky@gmail.com. Brewster County Commissioners are scheduled to vote on whether or not to support this bill at commissioners court April 14.
