Dark Skies Proposed Bill HB 4305.
A pristine night sky is significant to the Big Bend region’s economy and culture. Without it, a big part of the draw would be gone.
As we grow, we run the risk of losing this precious resource. HB 4305 allows usage of the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) on efforts to preserve dark skies in Far West Texas.
Under HB 4305, municipalities in Presidio and Brewster counties could use revenue from the municipal hotel occupancy tax “for the promotion and preservation of dark skies through construction and maintenance of infrastructure and the purchase and installation of hardware that reduces light pollution and sky glow.” They could improve city or county lighting, or fund projects to improve lighting on private businesses or residences.
If you support this bill or want to learn more, please attend the next County Commissioners meeting or submit a letter of support to the Big Bend Dark Sky Alliance (Big Bend Citizens Alliance) at bigbenddarksky@gmail.com. Brewster County Commissioners are scheduled to vote on whether or not to support this bill at commissioners court April 14.
