We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors; we borrow it from our children.

Terlingua Writers Circle: A Constructive Space for the Written & Spoken Word Got a story to suss out? A tale that needs telling? Poetry need polishing? Oration needs inspiration? Creations need criticism? Come workshop your written and spoken words with like-minded folx. Every Saturday @ 1pm @ La Posada Milagra

Let's think about water, rain and the facts of desert life. Let's think about getting a
truckload (average 8) of Wylie catchment tanks started now. If we can fill a load early,
we can get the jump on Spring, and the farmers and ranchers in the high planes who take
Wylie's top priority at that time of the year. For a deposit toward a tank(s), we will write
your name in ink on the order sheet. We don't cash checks until your tank is in your
possession. Tanks and supplies are sales-tax free in Texas. And ours are delivered freight-free.
So, think about it; then, call us. 371-2506  or email elcentro432@gmail.com.

The ladies of Otra Vez thrift store would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and to thank everyone for their support in 2018. Hi all. I've locked the trailer down for now as it's full. And with the shutdown I don't know when we will be able to go back to PJ to empty the trailer. I'll be taking cardboard up to Alpine next week and possibly some plastic. I've put signs up at the trailer to this effect and also to let people know not to leave any bags there.     Thanks, Robert

Frona Fern Farrelly started her journey in the northeastern United States...Baltimore, Md. to be exact.  She was drawing, painting and creating since she could hold a pencil and paintbrush.  She studied at University of Md. and Loyola College and got degrees in art and teaching.  After traveling to fuel her inspiration and see other parts of the world, she married in London.  Moving back to the states, they settled in Texas and she continued her education studying in Paris through International Studies Abroad...painting and art history, Florence, Italy at the Academia D'Arte...techniques of the great masters, Ireland at various workshops and Edinburgh at the Academy of Realist Art.  Frona, her husband and cats moved to Florida for 7 years where she was fortunate to live near the Southern Atelier in Sarasota. She took classes there and also studied privately.  Now back in Texas...for good!!...they have settled in Terlingua where she is letting all she has learned and been exposed to culminate and emerge with her own unique interpretation that is truly Frona.  "I am happy to call Terlingua my home.  There is a strong creative energy that draws and keeps so many artists here.  I am deeply inspired and love being surrounded by these magical mountains and creative community.  I look forward to many happy and rewarding years as a productive artist."

"Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas." – Calvin Coolidge

Christmas in Boquillas! I want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped us bring Christmas to Boquillas once again. We had to do a little rescheduling to beat the government shutdown, but we are resilient. It was a beautiful day and before it was over we managed to get presents to all the kids and a Christmas ham to every family. This is getting a little harder to do every year because the community is thriving and growing but I think that's a good thing. Again, I cannot over emphasize how much good help we had. The outpouring of support in the form of gifts, donations, and help was incredible. In the final moments when we were turning up a little short folks stepped up and we made it happen. I couldn't possibly name everyone who helped but you know who you are, and I hope this brings a little Christmas cheer to your life.  There were stocking stuffers and present wrappers, ham transporters, boat providers, and elves to help hand out gifts. It filled my heart with joy and I hope it did the same for you. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all! Jo Jo Jo.   Marcos Paredes

Merle Haggard is an adorable, goofy 6 month old Pitbull mix that loves to play. He loves to ride in the car and really enjoys playing with other dogs. Merle is a lover, not a fighter.  He is nearly housebroken - very few accidents. Merle's cutest trait is his head tilt and ability to snuggle. He is fully vaccinated and neutered. **Merle needs a 2 week temporary foster in Dec 31-Jan 14th **. If you can help and/or are interested in adoption, please contact mmwesttx@yahoo.com

In Native American cultures which tracked the calendar by the Moons, December’s Full Moon was known as the Full Cold Moon. It is fittingly associated with the month when the winter cold fastens its grip and the nights become long and dark.
This Full Moon is also called the Long Nights Moon by some Native American tribes because it occurs near the winter solstice—the day with the least amount of daylight.

Desert Lotus Healing Arts wishes everyone a Happy Solstice and Merry Christmas! We welcome the return of the light with open arms. We have lovely gift certificates available for holiday giving and appointments available  for you and your loved ones to relax and unwind over the winter break.
Call or text (432)386-0305 for information, scheduling and gift certificates.

On Sunday December 23rd
There will be a reading of the traditional Christmas Story at our regular morning worship service at 11am followed by our second annual Christmas Carol Sing-along led by Ted Arbogast and members of the Terlingua Choir. Welding classes.  Nehemiah's Outcry will be forging ahead with classes beginning Monday January 7th and 8th, at Big Bend Church.  We will have time slots at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on those days.   If these classes are something you would be interested in, or you know someone who is, please remember these dates.  These classes are free, but any proceeds that maybe donated go to help off set the expense of the consumables (electrodes, acetylene and oxygen and mixed gases if needed etc.).   Big Bend Church does not require any funds from Outcry but underwrites the electricity and the shop area for which we are grateful to them.  The following two weeks, the instructor will be involved in administering welder testing in central Texas and the Las Cruces NM area.  Then, as of this notice we will continue with classes on the 28th and 29th of January.  If there are questions, feel free to email, noutcry@yahoo.com or call Ray at 432-837-3737.  From Nehemiah's Outcry we wish everyone, a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.

Hurd Homeland Security Bill Passes Senate
WASHINGTON, DC – Last night, U.S. Representative Will Hurd’s bill, the DHS Data Framework Act, was passed unanimously by the Senate. After the House concurs with the Senate version’s language, it will be sent to the President’s desk to be signed into law. After hearing this tremendous news, Hurd gave the following statement:

“We live in an increasingly connected world and must be able to get the right information to the right people at the right to time in order to keep terrorists on the run and off our shores,” said Hurd, a former CIA undercover officer who serves on the House Homeland Security and Intelligence Committees in Congress. “The DHS Data Framework Act does just that by allowing DHS to quickly and safely share sensitive information among law enforcement agencies without compromising our nation’s secrets.

So please don't leave anything outside the trailer. If we are full then please take it back home or take it to Alpine. Thanks, Robert

EL PASO VA
The El Paso Clinic Director, Michael Amaral, visited Brewster County 27 Nov. At 1100 he meet with 25 to 30 area Veterans to brief them on changes the VA is making on their health care. Now the VA must make appointments for Veterans and if farther than 40 miles from a VA facility or cannot make appointment in 30 days Veterans will be offered to use local resources or use a VA facility.
In our area there are many medical resources they can use instead of traveling to Big Spring or El Paso VA clinics. The Big Bend Regional Hospital is a Community Clinic meaning any services offered by Big Bend Regional Hospital can be used by Veterans once referred by VA. There are many changes still to come as new VA laws take effect. When Veterans call for appointments they should be sure VA representatives understand Veteran is over 40 miles away. We will endeavor to keep all Veterans updated as new procedures are implemented.

WELDING CLASSES
Hello everyone, Nehemiah's Outcry is hoping things are going well for everyone.  We have been involved in work and welding classes on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and the Dine (Navajo) Reservation in the Gallup, New Mexico area.  We have had some huge improvements in the tools and equipment acquired because of some very gracious and wonderful people sympathetic to our objectives.  We are going to have this equipment on display at Big Bend Church, Sunday, December 9.  We will have it there for the church to see, but then in the afternoon, the trailer will be open for display for everyone to see.  Even if you are not interested in welding, anyone is most welcome to come see for yourselves what our great God has done as He has worked through great folks.  Then, at 3 pm that day, for folks interested in taking the welding classes, we will have a meeting allowing young people from 9th grade and older and adults to register, go through some orientation and see the schedule.  We will discuss hoodtime and projects that we could do.  If you have any questions, feel free to call Ray Bullock's cell at 432-837-3737 or leave a message on the church phone at 432-371-2243.  Email is noutcry@yahoo.com.
We hope to hear from you.

LUCILLE RECYCLES
Alpine friends, please share this information: Lucille (my 1982 Ford Truck) and I have started a business called Lucille Recycles. We are now offering residential monthly pickups for $25, if you live within the town's limits. Just text me to get started (432.258.8166) and please let your neighbors know so more recyclables can be hauled off and reused instead of creating a larger Big Bend landfill!

DENNIS MAUPIN
Just heard that Dennis Maupin passed... we had emailed recently about needing to get together and catch up... lots going on... He was a great guy and was instrumental in helping me get settled when I first moved to Terlingua. He built my porch, battery box, laid the concrete tiles for my outdoor hang-out space, and just generally kept my place functional for the first few years.  We'd have long talks about politics and economics... local history and gossip... he knew everybody on the ranch, it seemed, and all their stories.  We might not see each other for months at a time, but when we did see each other it was immediately comfortable... we just took up where we left off.  I really liked knowing he was over the rise in his dome sitting in his outdoor chair and watching the stars.  I'm going to miss him a lot.
DAR GOOD CITIZEN
The staff of Big Bend High School has chosen Yoali Aviles Galindo as this year’s DAR Good Citizen.  She is the daughter of Noemi and Jaime Aviles of Terlingua.  Yoali will be honored with other local area seniors at a DAR ceremony in Alpine in February.  The program is sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution Paisano Chapter. The DAR Good Citizen Program is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.  The senior student selected must excel in the following qualities:
Dependability (which includes truthfulness, honesty, punctuality)
Service (which includes cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others)
Leadership (which includes personality, self-control, and the ability to assume responsibility)
Patriotism (which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation)

Ticket sales are capped at 175 and all sponsorships are gone so be sure to get your tickets now at www.faroutbooking.com. One thing folks may not know is that all of the musicians who play at Slim Fest were a part of Slim and Francie's world. Here's this year's lineup! The Guy Forsyth Blues Band, Wood & Wire, Alan Munde, The Bill Kirchen Trio, The Emily Gimble Band, The Paper Moon Shiners, The Spare Tire, Three Hands High, Uh Clem & The Grands, JoBuk Johnson and Slim & Francie's band, The Jitterbug Vipers. Thursday and Friday are also part of Slim fOUr but open to all and an open mic! For more info or questions call: 830.739.6986

WILL HURD
TORNILLO, TX – Rep. Hurd released the following statement regarding the Tornillo Facility:
“The problems we are seeing in Tornillo are as shameful as they were in June and symptoms of a much larger problem that we’ve spent years ignoring – a broken immigration system. Similar to building a wall from sea to shining sea, detaining kids in Tornillo is the most expensive and least effective policy approach that fails to address root causes of migration flows or make anyone safer. I’ve said this repeatedly, without working with our partners in Central America, we will not solve our current border crisis which impacts the daily lives of thousands of constituents in my district.
