Terlingua MOON
August 28, 2017
Volume 28 ~ #35

"... we would become nothing without deep and pressing country, places we can never name or possess. Our insides would weaken if we did not have such things. Our minds would become bitter and self-absorbed. I had many times tried to invent a valid argument for the preservation of wilderness and could never find it within the bounds of my language. But I knew that without these far places we were risking ourselves as a species. We need these anchors in the land. . . If we didn't have a place like this, we'd die without ever knowing we were dead. We'd just keep building things that make our lives better, letting us live longer, but dead the whole time." Craig Childs

Terlingua Visual Arts - Sponsorship Now Available:
Once a year, Terlingua Visual Arts reaches out to our business community and other individuals to sponsor our annual Terlingua Artists Calendar. In the past, not only has sponsorship made it possible for local artists to expose and promote their work, but also to raise funds for art events, supplies and further promotion. Your contribution, no matter the amount, is a sure sign of a healthy community in which we all benefit. We artists and art lovers appreciate your generosity.
This week pledge cards have gone out to local venues, and we hope to have a continued commitment to our efforts. Demonstrate your pride by displaying the sponsorship card in your business. We also hope that area artists will show their appreciation by using these sponsors' goods and services in the year to come.  --Mary Diesel, TVA Facilitator

Wylie water tanks: If you haven't confirmed your tank with a deposit, we are still waiting so we can call in this order. If you have changed your mind, please let us know so we can free up your space on this truck-load for other neighbors. Local # 2506; cell # (512) 924-2506 or email elcentro432@gmail.com

Terlingua Recycles could still use a few more volunteers, especially as our core group is away for the summer months. Even if you can’t help out with trips to the recycling center in BBNP, we still need your help with the recycling.
Some are new to recycling (thank you!) and some have been doing so for some time. A few things to note - all items that we accept are clearly marked on the sign in front of the recycling bins (located just behind the Terlingua EMS station). No matter what you recycle, please be sure it's clean. Human beings have to sort through all items as we parse out the recyclables at the recycling station in BBNP.
Plastic: Bubble wrap is not an acceptable item. Plastic hair brushes and tent stakes are not acceptable plastic. Please crush milk and other plastic containers as well as possible before placing in bins.
Cardboard: Please break down boxes as best you can. Tossing into bins “as is” a) takes up a considerable amount of space and causes the volunteers to have to break down the boxes.  Aluminum:  Clean aluminum. Not crumpled up aluminum foil with the remnants of last night's dinner. Ditto no window frames or metal tent stakes.
NO BATTERIES OR CAUSTIC MATERIALS. EVER. PERIOD.
Please use common sense when the bins are full. There is a not-to-exceed line marked on each bin. If you exceed those levels it creates a lot of extra work. If a bin is full, please take your items home and store for a few days. If bins are overflowing, trust us, we're aware.
Please lend a hand when you can. Many hands make light work. For more information send a message to terlinguarecycles on Facebook or call 830.739.6986.

August 27th. Increase Of PC Controlled Water Extraction In El Granero Dam
Authorities of the State Attorney General's Office through the Civil Protection Coordination reported that as a preventive measure the cost of leaving the Luis L. León Dam at 280 cubic meters per second was increased; That is to say, in order to prevent the body of water from spilling uncontrollably, the amount of water that was added to it in a protocolary manner was increased.
Better known as El Granero, and located in the channel of the River Conchos, Civil Protection elements requested support to the comrades of the municipalities of Aldama, Coyame, Ojinaga and Manuel Benavides to take appropriate measures and maintain the coordinated security and surveillance operations in the zone.
The population is also asked to heed the authorities' instructions, to avoid crossing fords, streams and rivers, and not to use them as tourist centers, in order to avoid misfortunes or accidents.

TERLINGUA MOON
Vol. 28  No. 34
August 22, 2017
By MaeWestern
“We are all descended from astronomers.”       —Neil deGrasse Tyson

Ruth Jansyn
Ruth F. Necheles Jansyn, age 81, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 15, 2017 at Catskills Regional Hospital in Harris, NY.  She was born in 1936 in Chicago to Dr. John and Dr. Henrietta (Magnus) Necheles.  She received her PHD from the University of Chicago and her MS in Industrial Relations from Rutgers.  Along her life journey, from high school teacher to Professor of History and Director of Labor Studies at Long Island University, she traveled extensively across the United States and Europe.  She lived in Chicago, New York, New Jersey and, for a while, in Paris where she researched and wrote a book about the Abbe Gregoir (her “moldy bishop”), one of her numerous publications in the field of history.
She married Leon Jansyn in 1978.  Together they had many adventures as he joined her in their worldly travels.  Their adventures ranged from longer than sensible boat trips in an old leaky wooden power boat (with no reverse) to working at archaeological sites in Northern Italy, Australia, and Russia.
Upon retiring as a History Professor from Long-Island University, Ruth studied multiple facets of art including watercolor, painting, sketching, and photography.  She focused on photography, studying the subject for seven years at Long Island University eventually building a business around that skill.
During their explorations within the United States Ruth and Leon stumbled upon Terlingua, TX and grew to love that location and its residents.  They ultimately divided their time between their long time home in Highland Park, NJ and Terlingua, TX.
In both New Jersey and Texas, Ruth was active in the community and volunteered extensively.  She enjoyed community events such as the art shows, book clubs and word-offs. She enjoyed her time spent volunteering at such places as Otra Vez and the art gallery.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Dr. Thomas F. Necheles, and her husband, Leon Jansyn.  She is survived by her sister-in-law, Carmen Necheles, nieces and nephews: Jean Necheles, Michael Necheles, Susan Necheles, Peter Necheles, and Anna Necheles, her step children: Diana Evensen, Benjamin Jansyn, Kate Jansyn, and Ruth Henning, nine Jansyn grandchildren, nine Necheles great nieces, one Necheles great nephew and two Necheles great, great nephews.  She is also survived by a great number of friends.
Memorial services will be arranged for Highland Park, NJ in September and for Terlingua, TX in the winter.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend at P.O. Box 83, Terlingua, TX 79852.

Could y'all let your friends know I need toilet paper/paper towel rolls, scraps of interesting paper, magazines, wire, or anything we could use for our projects? They can be dropped off at school for Ms. Braswell, or message me and I'll come get them or meet up. Thanks so much."

Some Native American tribes called the August Moon the “Sturgeon Moon” because they knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this Full Moon. They also called August’s Moon the “Full Green Corn Moon.”  Different tribes had different Moon name preferences. Other examples for August are: “Wheat Cut Moon” (San Ildefonso, and San Juan), “Moon When All Things Ripen” (Dakotah Sioux), and ”Blueberry Moon” (Ojibwe).

"For our friends here in Terlingua, we are going to have a memorial/celebration for Chris Miller on Saturday, August 5 at the Terlingua American Legion - (see their website for the address if you’re unfamiliar with it- https://alp653.com/terlingua/ ). We'd like to start about 11am (with some words from me & anyone else that wants to add anything remembering him) and then just hang out, visit & reminisce until about 2 or 3 pm.
I would like to ask for anyone willing to share: Would you bring a written story or memory you have of Chris and a picture to go with it (if you have one)? Maybe date it too if you remember when it was (even a rough idea) and be sure to include your info too! I want to take all of these wonderful stories & memories and make a book for the girls. Don't worry if you forget, I'll make sure we have paper & pens there too!
Thank you again for all of your support, it's appreciated more that you will ever know!
Love,    Nicole Miller"

Princess and Delilah really love each other. We wouldn't say they were a bonded pair, but they very much enjoy each other's company and take great comfort in each other. They went through some tough stuff together, and would like to see a better world together too. If you have a heart big enough for TWO small/medium dogs, both Princess and Delilah would be a delightful addition to your family. Princes is 3 years old, and Delilah is 4. Both like people and other dogs. Adoption fee negotiable. For more information, please email heather themule@gmail.com
