At this one-of-a-kind, binational festival you will have the opportunity to try many brands of sotol and meet the sotoleros who produce it, along with on-site camping, live music, local vendors and more. If you are asking yourself “What is sotol?” or if you have known about this earthy elixir for years, this festival is for you. On Friday, April 12, the festivities begin at La Kiva Restaurant and Bar, with live music from some of the best Terlingua local musicians. Saturday morning we're taking the party across the Río Grande from Big Bend National Park to our favorite town in México, Boquillas, for an authentic experience and to celebrate the unity, peace, dignity, and respect that we enjoy daily here in our piece of the borderland.  On Saturday night, the party reconvenes at La Kiva for more live music from the Pinche Gringos, The Doodlin' Hogwallops, and headliners, Mike & The Moonpies – and, of course, more sotol tasting! MAYBE YOUR FUTURE DOGGIE?  RED GIRL
Are you looking for a cuddle bug? Red could be your girl! Red is approximately two years old, and she has never met a stranger. She truly loves people. Red loves other dogs too, but not so much cats! We would recommend she goes to a feline-free home. Overall, Red is pretty easy going. She walks like a dream on a leash! Red sleeps nicely in a crate indoors at night and it outside during the day. She hasn't yet had free roam inside the house, so she may need a little work with house training. Red is spayed and fully vaccinated. Even though she can play hard, all she really wants to do is snuggle up to you for some lovin'. Are you ready? Please email mmwesttx@yahoo.com or contact the Marathon Animal Shelter at  432-386-4593.

BIG BEND HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM
will be hosting an open house and fundraiser Saturday April 13th, 2019. Approximately 7 AM to 12 PM. Come see our robot demonstrations. Weather permitting we will have tethered hot air balloon rides. More details to come.

Mmm and then you fry em up until they're done.
Yip Yip Yip!
That's the secret of The Lip!”

100 PER CENT SUI GENERIS STORYTELLING.  Terlingua’s literary mavericks, buzzing with individuality and who knows what else, made a perfect evening of it for WordOff 2019, Feb. 5. Storytelling lasted darn near 3 hours, and folks were especially loosened up during the 2nd and 3rd halves.  There was a strong show of support for the new venue, Terlingua Community Theatre – thanks Last Minute Low Budget Productions!  Even a pooch shared the stage while another was at home under the stadium seats.  Yep, that’s Terlingua.  It even rained, showing what happens when enough people reflect on water; after all, the theme was Tales Of Water Flowing/All Things River Related (Thanks D.M. for pointing that out!).  There was a cold story from Wisconsin, river parables learnt from grand dame La Río Grande, poetry teased from serpents, sing-alongs, memories, love gone awry, and an open general membership to this en plein air experiment most attendees call home – or would like to.  Thanks for a warm fuzzy evening to all participants!  Don’t forget to do it again next year!

DOGGO OF THE WEEK.  Dawn is a snuggly dog- and cat- friendly homebody who likes the same ol’ same ol’ – so long as it’s wonderful!!  She is a pint-sized pit bull mix with fantastic stand-up ears (yes, she might be part duck).  She is one year old and happy to be out of the shelter and in a foster home but needs to find her forever home.  Contact Alpine Animal Services for more info or to arrange a meeting.  (432) 837-9030 or admin@alpinehumanesociety.org.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS
Today [Feb. 1], U.S. Representative Will Hurd (TX-23) introduced a bipartisan bill with Rep. Susan Davis (CA-49) to reauthorize the grant program Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), continuing his efforts to champion educational opportunities for Texans. U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

This competitive grant program helps low-income middle and high school students prepare for college and their careers through counseling, tutoring, mentoring and scholarships. Last year, Texas was awarded more than $25 million in new yearly grant funding including new grants for Sul Ross State University (Sul Ross) and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Sul Ross State’s GEAR UP grant is funded at more than $900,000 a year. More than 1,100 GEAR UP students from the Alpine, Del Rio, Fort Davis, Fort Stockton, Marathon, Marfa, Presidio, and Terlingua school districts will be served by the seven-year grant. UTEP’s GEAR UP program has served area students since its first grant cycle in 1999 and is currently funded at over $2 million a year. This program will provide comprehensive support to students in 10 Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) middle schools. UTEP partners with numerous outside organizations such as the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas-El Paso Branch to promote financial literacy and career development and El Paso Electric to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) events, career fairs and mentorship activities.

“Ensuring access to educational opportunities for Texans of all backgrounds strengthens our economy, drives innovation across all industries and allows folks to overcome socioeconomic challenges that are influenced by education inequality,” said Hurd. “GEAR UP serves thousands of local students in my district and gives them the tools they need to become valuable contributors to our workforce. I’ll continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure that every student has an equal chance for success.”

“Our local schools should be able to use grants to cater specifically to their students’ needs,” Sen. Cornyn said. “This legislation will bring even greater local control in the GEAR UP program, from which many students in Texas have already benefited. I look forward to working with my colleagues to make sure students don’t fall behind, improve college completion rates, and ensure decisions rest with those who know our students best.”

“With college dropout rates some of the highest among low-income students, programs like GEAR UP are essential to helping students who start college graduate,” said Rep. Susan Davis, Chair of the Higher Education and Workforce Investment Subcommittee. “The GEAR UP program’s proven success means expanding the program will put more low-income students who start college in a position to finish college.”

“Being in a region filled with small towns, it sometimes feels like our students’ potential can be overlooked, but GEAR UP shows that we are making a difference in their lives.  We are expanding their educational experience and closing the learning gap,” said Sul Ross GEAR UP Director Monica Saenz.

“The GEAR UP program has proven to be a catalyst for educational attainment and progression to a post-secondary degree. Our GEAR UP grant results in more students completing high school and pursuing a college degree” said Gary Edens, Ed.D., Vice President for Student Affairs at UTEP.

“We applaud Rep. Will Hurd’s continued efforts to champion GEAR UP programs for students of color across the country. San Antonio ISD (SAISD) has been the recipient of two GEAR UP grants serving the Class of 2012 and 2017. With the support of these grants, the SAISD Class of 2017 outperformed every class from 2011 through 2016 on a baseline comparison of 2011 data to the Class of 2017 performance. GEAR UP students report that much of their success is due to the dedication of GEAR UP staff, who have known and supported them since the 7th grade. The staff have followed them as they enrolled in college, enlisted in the military, and embarked on a diverse set of careers. We look forward to future GEAR UP competitions and the opportunity to submit new applications to provide thousands of additional SAISD students the college awareness and access benefits that past GEAR UP cohorts have received,” said Roxanne Rosales, San Antonio ISD GEAR UP Grant Manager.

BIG BEND BREWERY SHOWING US SOME LOVE ON FEB. 14!
Friends & neighbors-- as you all know, this has been a hard time for Big Bend Brewing Co. We have suspended operations while we look for a way to keep the dream alive. However, life keeps on moving, in good times and in hard times, we're still carrying the flame, and Valentine's Day is just around the corner. And on Valentine's Day, Valentine, Texas is the center of the world. So please join us for the 7th Annual Valentine's Day in Valentine, Texas party. Due to the unusual circumstances, this year will be a little different than the others: much more informal, and we WON'T be selling tickets, merchandise, or beer. We WILL be showing up at the Old Mercantile building at 4  on Thursday, February 14th, with food & drink to share, and great live music including Doug Moreland. Please come celebrate perseverance, grit, community, great beer, and the West Texas dream with us. There's nothing you need to do in advance, just make your way to Valentine on Valentine's Day. If you are interested in volunteering, we'd love to have you; email us at valentine@bigbendbrewing.com. Otherwise, stay tuned here for more details, including the specifics of the specialty bottle release, Alpine taproom hours on 2/14 & 2/15, and general information. Viva Tejas, y viva Valentine!
