TERLINGUA MOON/ 28 March 2016/ Vol. 27, No. 13

By TwEyelight raven

"I did not want to live out my life in the strenuous effort to hold a ghost world together. It was plain as the stars that time herself moved in grand tidal sweeps rather than the tick-tocks we suffocate within, and that I must reshape myself to fully inhabit the earth rather than dawdle in the sump of my foibles." Jim Harrison 12/11/37 – 3/26/16

The Fire Management Office at Big Bend National Park, in conjunction with the park's Science and Resource Management Division, is planning an upcoming river cane prescribed burn. The burn will take place during the week of April 4, 2016. Ignitions will take place between Solis and Gravel Pit. Approximately seven miles of river cane will be burned, for a total of approximately 100 acres. This burn will facilitate the removal of exotic river cane and restore the Rio Grande to a more natural flow. Burning should be completed by April 9th, depending on weather and fuel conditions. River traffic may need to be escorted through the burn area, and although there could be delays, we do not anticipate closing river traffic. Members of the Diablos International Fire Crew, Big Bend firefighters, rangers, and several outside resources will be called upon to make the burn a success.  Additionally, representatives from Las Madera del Carmen and the World Wildlife Fund will be observing the fire operations in order to foster ongoing international coordination and cooperation on this project. For more information call Ed Waldron 432-477-2397.

Alpine Animal Shelter:  Harper and Hudson are young Jack Russell terrier mixes (littermates) who came into the shelter as strays. Both are pretty unsure about things but Hudson has more confidence than Harper. They need an owner willing to put real effort into giving them (if adopted together, or individually) lots of good, trust-building experiences. Hudson and Harper both take a lot of comfort in each other if your heart and home can keep these siblings together. Both are less than a year old and about 20 pounds. Harper and Hudson have been spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all shots. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. AAS animals are online at https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=TX1202 For more info email heatherthemule@gmail.com

Hi there good folks!  With the influx of submissions for The Moon, we’d like to ask that you draft your submissions as you’d like them to be read.  There’s a lot to edit to begin with but trying to align an event with the sender is getting a bit difficult!  Please don’t forget to submit your information to TerlinguaMoon@gmail.com  no later than noon on Mondays for that week’s edition.  Also, we can’t cut and paste from PDF files or other web-based documents so be sure that anything you want published gets to us in a format we can use, preferably in the “body” of your email!

Finally – if you have a friend or neighbor without a computer, please print out a copy of the Moon and give it to them if possible.  We will not be distributing hard copies of this week’s Moon.

Centennial Showcase
In honor of the 100 year anniversary of the National Park Service, Big Bend National Park will host a Centennial Showcase Event at Rio Grande Village Group Campground on Saturday, March 26, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event highlights the diversity of work activities that National Park Service employees perform in Big Bend. Activity stations feature trail crew demonstrations, wildland fire engine, road machinery, mule team, bird watching challenge, river camp set-up, and much more.
According to Superintendent Cindy Ott-Jones, “There are many behind-the-scenes facets to protecting our park resources and providing visitor services at Big Bend.  We want to demonstrate some of those work activities and highlight what the National Park Service does here at Big Bend and throughout the country.”
A number of partners will also be on hand to share their contributions and involvement with Big Bend.  Among those participating will be Big Bend Conservancy, Boquillas Village, Big Bend Natural History Association, and Maderas del Carmen Protected Area.  In addition, staff from McDonald Observatory will offer solar viewing with a special telescope, and Fort Davis National Historic Site will invite visitors to step back in history with late 1880s-era soldier activities.
There will be free souvenirs for visitors, and a free lunch will be provided by the Chisos Mountain Lodge, a Forever Resorts Property, to those participating in the Showcase activities.  The menu will include hamburgers, hot dogs, and barbequed pork.
“The Centennial Showcase is just one of several events that Big Bend will offer throughout the year to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service,” said Bryan Frohbieter, Centennial Coordinator for the park.
“It’s also important for us to express appreciation to our visitors for their on-going support of Big Bend and the National Park Service.”
Activities begin at 10 a.m. and will conclude at 2 p.m.  Visitors are encouraged to bring water, a hat, and sunscreen.  This event is offered free of charge; park entrance fees apply.

The Latest from La Kiva
Today is St. Patrick’s day and it is also the day that the great people at Dellco completed the ductwork they were building for us and came to complete the installation of the hoods.  While delivering the ductwork they brought with them most of the remaining items to complete the equipment line up.  That leaves us with two more steps to final completion of the kitchen.  Step one is to get the ANSUL system installed (that’s the fire suppression system and is essential if we are to have insurance on the property).  Step two is to get the approval of the health inspector.  We have been very careful to work with the inspector at every step of the way and expect this to be both simple and easy.  All in all, we feel are now in good shape.
This morning I was in the kitchen making sure that everything was on track.  We had three kitchen installers, two electricians, one cook, one handyman, one cleaner, myself and three dogs including a Great Dane in the kitchen at one time.  If we had any more help we would need a bigger kitchen.
The ANSUL installers are the last delay and they are scheduled to be on site on the 28th, 29th and 30th of March.  That means that we are really close to being fully functional.
The next big thing is to have you sample our food.
For the whole story, go to http://la-kiva.com/2016/03/kitchen-completion-is-in-sight/

Roxy
Roxy is a 6-year old dog who would probably settle for just the basics but deserves so much more. Roxy gets along with other dogs, love snuggles, and is quiet and well-mannered in her kennel. She knows her name, comes when called, and walks well on a leash. Roxy would absolutely blossom if showered with love and attention, the comforts of an indoor life and the opportunity to be fully welcomed into a forever family. Roxy is spayed, microchipped, up to date on all shots. Her adoption fee is $50 this week.

OREO has been waiting for his family at the Alpine shelter for more than 6 months. A special advocate has been taking him off-site twice a week to do some enrichment and keep him from despair. He loves these outings – the car, the ability to run at top speed, and good fun with other dogs. Oreo is showing good progress in his leash training and manners, and is kid-tested and kid-approved! He is a beautiful dog, now about 16-18 months old. His DNA test identified his mutt-ly greatness: Australian shepherd, malamute, husky and Staffordshire terrier. Oreo is an athletic 50 pounds and is neutered, microchipped and up to date on all shots. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located on the east side of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. WANNA BOOGIE?
BOOGIE is a 3 month-old heeler mix.  He's a typical working-dog-breed puppy: alert, athletic, and very cuddly, wiggly and playful.  This guy could do any job you give to him, even if that job is fetching a ball every day for a good amount of time, or learning to high five and roll over.  BOOGIE plays king of the mountain on a human lap, and is willing to share that lap with other pups.  He was found with his friend Peach, much smaller than him, and he treats her tenderly, so it's clear that BOOGIE will be a good friend to everyone. His $100 adoption fee includes sterilization, microchipping and all shots and vaccines. The Alpine Animal Shelter is open M-F from 10am to 6pm (closed 1-2pm) and by appointment on the weekends, located just east of Alpine on Old Marathon Road. All AAS animals are online at https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=TX1202 For more info email heatherthemule@gmail.com
