Thursday September 19,2019 Terlingua American Legion Post 653 donated the American flag to Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson and jail administrator Jose Gutierrez to be flown at the county jail. American Legion District 16 South Zone Commander Dave Lambrix presented the flag on Terlingua behalf.

Post requested by a local.  This person is a relative, known to them to be a “very good person and very responsible.  The FBI won’t investigate because there is no crime involved. We are worried for his safety.” Locals, please keep your eyes open for him or the vehicle.

SHINING A LIGHT ON OUR DARK SKY HEROES:  On behalf of the Terlingua Dark Sky Alliance, Many Thanks to those in the Ghost Town/Study Butte area for showing outstanding community leadership and preserving our view of the night skies by dimming the night lights down:  Far Flung Outdoor Center, Big Bend River Tours, Desert Sports, Terlingua Fire and EMS, Nuevo Terlingua, Villa Terlingua, Taqueria Milagro, Starlight Theater, Posada Milagro guesthouses, Cottonwood General Store, Gallery Chisos, Rio Aviation, Earth and Fire Gallery,  Retro Rents, Terlingua School.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE A DARK SKY HERO, Contact Amber Harrison at bigbenddarksky@gmail.com. Amber has free printed information and is available for a free consultation on how to change your lighting to be SAFE and ECONOMICAL. Sometimes a simple adjustment is all that is needed.  If you've been overlooked in this list, and are dark sky compliant, please email/message Molly Dumas at mollyd57@hotmail.com. If you are unsure if you are dark sky compliant, contact Amber. Visit the International Dark Sky Association webpage: https://www.darksky.org/ for more information.
Finally, we’d like to give a special thanks to Brewster County Sheriff, Ronny Dodson, Terlingua Ranch residents, and Rio Grande Electric for working together to improve community lighting.
[Editor’s Note: Being Night Sky Friendly does not mean no lights outside.  We have plenty of lighting for nighttime safety and also have no night sky UNFRIENDLY lighting.  Easy, and actually cheaper once you understand what works and what doesn’t. TRY IT!]

The Terlingua Bottoms Group of AA meets every Thursday at 7:30 at the Big Bend Church in Study Butte.  The meetings are open to anyone who has or thinks they may have a drinking problem.

Uh Memorial, October 19, a Saturday.
Clem requested that we all get together once he passed and watch the sunset on the Chisos, play some music, and drink some beer. I will be working out the details in the next few weeks, but want to get the word out so people can make arrangements to come. We might need to have kegs and food in the horseshoe pits, but either way we can meet at the porch in the Terlingua Ghost Town. I’m thinking 4:00ish, I think sunset is around 7:20pm. Please bring a chair, potluck dish, musical instruments, and something you would like to read or share... *all of those are optional!
I will update this as we make decisions. I made it public so please share and feel free to make suggestions.
Look forward to seeing you there!
Susan Rothelle

All Energies Tip of the Week! Inverters come in two sine waves: “Modified” and “Pure” sine wave. Pure sine wave is what the electrical utility delivers. Modified Sine wave is the less expensive option, and is similar but different. When using modified sine wave, motors will run hotter, turn slower and make more noise. Power supplies will also run hotter and some devices will not turn on at all! Some of the best Pure sine wave inverters actually deliver a better waveform than the power company. Modified sine wave inverters are fine for non-critical applications, but understanding the difference is important to making an educated purchase. If you need help making your solar system work better, email casey@allenergies.net or call/text 432-242-1874.

Terlingua MOON
September 17, 2019
Vol.  30   No. 38

by Million sMiles

"We have one life, one shot at all the glorious things of life, and we walk about constricted, apologetic, afraid. We have so little time; we have so little space upon which to spread our love and our talents and our kindness. Run toward life fulsomely and freely."            ~ Tennessee Williams

Mil Gracias from Team Ceillydee
Bob, Leo and I want to extend gratitude beyond words to our incredible community for all the love and support you have shown us during this crazy, difficult healing journey we are on.
The “Glamboree” benefit Sunday night was a humbling and heart filling experience beyond anything I could have imagined. 28 years in this community have shown me that the people who call Terlingua home are as solid and beautiful, as timeless and magical as the mountains that surround us. The landscape of caring and community here is as soul soothing as the quiet starry desert and I have always felt blessed to have found this place and this tribe and to be able to call both my home.        thank you thank you thank you-    I will forever be so grateful        Ceil ♥️

FUNdRaiser! For Frank and Cheryl of Terlingua Ranch.  They lost just about everything they owned in a fire. 100% of dinner proceeds go to them.

When:  September 18 from 4 to 6 pm

All Energies Tip of the Week: Charge controllers are the heart of any off grid solar system. The main function of a charge controller is to regulate the solar input to the batteries. They're sold by their maximum amp rating and many can be set to handle different system voltages such as 12, 24 and 48 volt. The smallest and least expensive charge controllers are Pulse Width Modulated (PWM). With PWM controllers, your solar modules need to be matched to your battery voltage or you can never get your array’s full potential! If you have a small system (500W input or less) PWM is okay, but for larger systems a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charge  controller makes more sense. About 20 years ago, MPPT charge controllers entered the market and completely changed the way we design solar systems. An MPPT controller takes the excess voltage from your modules, converts it down and increases the charging current to the batteries so you can get up to 98% of your array’s output rating. But make sure to get your charge controller from a reputable manufacturer, because a controller malfunction can destroy your batteries! If you need help making your solar system work better, email casey@allenergies.net or call/text 432-242-1874.

ALL ENERGIES TIP OF THE WEEK: Did you know that the longest-lasting part of a solar system is usually the solar panels themselves? Solar panels -- often referred to as “modules” -- vary in price, dimensions, wattage, and efficiency. The modules themselves consist of multiple photovoltaic cells connected together to create voltage. Modules of 36 cells were once very common because they could charge 12 volt batteries directly (which is why they are often referred to as 12V panels). In 1999, a 36-cell module cost about $5 per watt, and an 80W module would have cost about $400. Today a 36-cell module is usually closer to 200W, and at $0.80 per watt it costs only about $160. Today, 36-cell modules are much less common than 60-cell and 72-cell modules, because matching the module voltage to the battery voltage is no longer necessary, thanks to Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charge controllers. If you need help making your solar system work better, email casey@allenergies.net or call/text (432) 242-1874.
