We welcome new vendors.  Come set up in the shade to sell your wares.  Flea market items are welcome.  After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green.  We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us.  For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com or pop in to the market for a chat.

Fresh eggs, local art, handcrafted textiles, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms, hand balms and perfumes, leather goods, handcrafted, creative jewelry, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and up-cycled, Sandy's pop up shop and more -- you never know just what you'll find here.

Do you have mad skills and smart, practical talents you'd like to share?  We all love to learn about sustainable arts and useful skills here in Terlingua.  Let's talk about a workshop.

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

HUGE THANK YOU!! ‑‑ Sending out a Huge Thank You to Volunteers Josh Keenan of Keenan Plumbing and Philip for completing the final section of water catchment gutter system and installing an additional 3,000 gallon tank on the Starlight Theatre.  This completes a years-long goal providing ample rain water for the community garden.   This project, planned in tandem with Ghosttown properties is a win-win situation.  Capturing rain away from the building also protects the old adobe structure from rain damage.  Also, one 3,000 gallon tank is always kept full of water for any emergency for the Starlight.

The community garden supporters are grateful to ALL of our gardeners and volunteers and our non-profit, the Big Bend Citizens Alliance, who helped create, maintain and sustain our beautiful, peaceful garden and keep the vision alive.

BIG BUDDHA BAKERY ‑‑ We are open Fridays & Saturdays 5-9 P.M. in Marfa at the courtyard behind Glitch Gallery next to the Saint George Hotel.  We now have indoor seating to escape the heat!

ESPRESSO … y POCO MAS ‑‑ Breakfast and lunch cooked to order from the freshest ingredients and the best coffee in town.  We use only Big Bend Roasters beans.  Pastries, newspapers, and great views.  A great local place for food and conversation.  Call 432 371 3044 for to go orders.

AN ELF OWL, A ROADRUNNER AND HUMANS ‑‑ What to do??

The Elf Owl in the photo appeared in our Desert Willow, in the middle of the day . . . how delightful, but also unusual as Elf Owls, the world’s smallest raptor, are nocturnal.  As we watched and photographed the owl, we became concerned that the owl may have been in distress, observing it leaning against a tree branch and panting.  It was 103 degrees and panting in birds is normal, but an Elf Owl wide awake in a tree in mid-day made us take notice.

As we watched, one of our resident Roadrunners came into the picture.  It was obviously focused on the Elf Owl and ready to attack.  While we believe in nature being nature and do not interfere, this just didn’t seem fair.  What to do?  We decided to try to discourage the Roadrunner.  Yelling and tossing rocks in its direction had no affect.  Human 1 moved closer and when he did, the Elf Owl spooked and flew . . . straight into our sliding glass door.  Human 2 saw this happen and alerted Human 1 who found the owl unconscious on the ground.  The roadrunner, finally discouraged, left.

Quite often when a bird flies into windows, they are stunned but recover after a few minutes.  Not this time.  The owl was still breathing so rather than leave it outside, we put it in a box and moved it into the house.  It survived the night so the next morning we tried to find someone who could help rehab the owl.  Unfortunately, Brewster County has no such services.  After some internet research, we found that dehydration was the biggest threat so using a formula we found, we mixed 1 cup of water with 1 teaspoon of sugar to give the owl.  We used a child’s paintbrush dipped in the sugar water and gently put that in the opened beak of the owl.  Today, 2 days later, the owl is still alive, getting stronger and will hopefully be released shortly after dark tonight.

Elf Owls are only found in the desert southwest of the US and are one of the target species many birders travel to Big Bend to see.  They are 5-3/4” tall, about the size of a house sparrow.  When it came to making the decision to interfere with nature, we understand that sometimes for one creature to survive, another must die.  But considering the number of roadrunners versus the number of elf owls, we made the choice to save the owl.  There are many other sources of food for the roadrunners so we’re pretty sure our roadrunner didn’t starve because of this incident.

Happy Birding!!  FreeBird
