The Starlight is happy to be hosting Slim Fest tWo the weekend of February 10th.

It's just 3 weeks until Slim Fest tWo - February 9-12th - at The Starlight Theatre in Terlingua. Many long time residents of the Big Bend knew Slim as a neighbor and as a world-class musician. February 11th would have been Slim's 79th birthday and we're throwing another party to celebrate the life and legacy of this incredible man. Grammy-nominated Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum; Wood & Wire who are currently taking the world by storm; dem ol' Greezy Wheels and The Jitterbug Vipers are just some of the headliners. You can find out more at www.faroutbooking.com and purchase your tickets online. They are $75 in advance for the whole weekend or $40 per night ($100 and $50 at the door). The Starlight will be exclusive to Slim Fest on the 10th and 11th and sales are capped at 200 so get yours now.

Memorial Service for Mozelle Jeffrey
Please come and share in a memorial service for our dear friend Mozelle Jeffrey, a long-time resident and active community member in Terlingua. All are welcome as we gather on Wednesday, January 25th, at 5 pm, at the Terlingua Ghost Town Cemetery. Bring seating if needed. Please share with anyone you think may want to come who may not have access to the Moon.

Come one, come all to the 3rd Annual Eyeball Student Art Show and Competition! A reception will be held on Thursday, February 2 from 4 - 5:30 pm at the Big Bend Library at the Terlingua School.  Feast your eyes on the creativity of our local youth, and share some tasty refreshments as well. Winners of the contest will be announced at the reception. Show your support for our community and learn about the annual art camp for kids.

There will be a Community Appreciation Party for DANNY (Big Bend Telephone), MANNY (UPS), and RAUL (West Texas Gas) at Terlingua Ranch Lodge on Friday, February 3rd at 4PM. All who hold appreciation to these men are invited to honor their great help & service! BYOB and/or snacks! They will receive tips from a tip jar & gifts. See you there!

ATTENTION COMMUNITY!!! Obviously the population is back and we're experiencing high traffic at the Terlingua Recycling Center (just behind Terlingua EMS). We appreciate all the effort going to recycling - it's why we're here in the first place!  However, please make sure that the Recycling Center guidelines are followed as far as what we can take, where it needs to be placed, etc. Please crush (by foot if need be) any large plastic containers to allow for more space. A reminder that we can't accept any form of styrofoam (even if it says recyclable on the back i.e. meat packaging, etc.). The cardboard is a bit overwhelming so we've brought another trailer that will hold cardboard only. There will, however, be a few bags in the front of the new cardboard trailer for overfill of cans.  We try to do a good job of going by there regularly to tidy up and sort what we can in advance but if you ever notice that things need attention, please send us a message here.  Info out soon about our next drive into the BBNP's Recycling Center to sort and clear our bins. Please pass this along and thank you GREEN TEAM!

The Terlingua Common School District will hold a public hearing and a regular Board Meeting at the Big Bend High School Meeting Room in Terlingua, TX on January 25, 2017 at 6:00PM. The purpose of the hearing is to discuss the school district’s Texas Academic Performance Report for the 2015-2016 school year. Public participation in the discussion is invited. The report can be accessed on the TEA website at:  https://rptsvr1.tea.texas.gov/perfreport/tapr/index.html

Congratulations to the teachers, administrators, and staff of the Terlingua Common School District.   A check of the State's web site 2015-16 Texas Academic Performance Report shows the TCSD "met requirements" for the accountability rating and "meets requirements" for the Special Education Determination Status.  A review of the details in the report shows that the district exceeded the state and district averages on most criteria.  Kudos to the teachers and staff that worked so hard to make this happen.  Terlingua - be proud! - Paul Glaves

Silence, meditation and an ancient teaching will be the order of the day on Saturday, 21, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at St. James Episcopal Church. All are welcome. The day begins with a continental breakfast followed by a teaching and practice of lectio divina. Lectio divina is an ancient way of reading the scriptures (or any other sacred text) and taking it in through the heart rather than the mind. There will also be two periods of Centering Prayer (a Christian method of meditation), as well as personal time for silence and solitude.
There is no fee, but donations are welcome. St. James is located at 510 N. 6th St at Ave A in Alpine. For more information, contact Pam Cook at 432-386-5988 or pscook.herenow@gmail.com

Word on the street is that the Big Bend Chamber of Commerce is in need of new leadership.  Seasoned web marketing technologist and Terlingua newcomer Tim Shirley says he has the background and bandwidth to build a better chamber, and that he's willing and able to shoulder the responsibility.  He can be reached at 432-360-4144, email bdaddy@wlweb.us or online at http://WLWeb.US."

Dodge is still at the shelter! He is a 4-year-old gorgeous german shepherd/pit bull mix who came into the shelter on 9/9/16. He comes when called (to his given name of “Dog” which we thought needed an upgrade) and really loves human affection. Dodge was surrendered due to a family crisis and likely was an only dog who lived in a yard. Dodge is friendly with all people and with some other dogs, but we recommend that he be an only dog - we think he’d prefer it and he has shown some selective behavior. Dodge walks well on a leash, appears housebroken, and longs for a permanent human connection.  He is a medium energy dog and weighs about 70 pounds. He’s desperate to be out of the shelter! For more information about Dodge, or any dog in the Alpine Animal Shelter, please email heatherthemule@gmail.com
