Earth and Fire Gallery

We are blessed to have three guest artists for the month of November.  Larry Short shares his pointillism, Amanda Johnson, her oils and watercolors, and Eddie Anderson, his wood working taken to a larger scale for us.

Along with our partners we have just what you are looking for!

Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00.  Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're there every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.

Fresh eggs, local art, handcrafted textiles, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms, hand balms, essential oil perfumes and sugar scrubs, leather goods, handcrafted, creative jewelry, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here. Indeed, lately, chess players have been meeting up for a game or two or three or....Sandy's back for the season to open her super cute pop-up shop on Saturdays and so is Valerie with her fine selection of culinary treats.

We welcome new vendors. Come set up down here in the shade to sell your wares. Flea market items are welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. For more information, text or call 432.213.1863, email SherriTheWriter@aol.com or pop in to the market for a chat. Prepared food vendors must display current food handling licence. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

Please help keep our market space safe and comfortable for all, two-legged and four, by keeping all dogs leashed and under control. We look forward to seeing you there.

FREDERICKSBURG:

Just wanted to let you know about the Texas Hill Country Cowboy Gathering this weekend in Fredericksburg, featuring some of the same performers you've seen in Alpine: Andy Hedges (songster), Joel Nelson (poet), Mike Blakely (singer/songwriter), Jake Riley (poet/humorist), and Chris Ryden (singer/songwriter). The Fredericksburg Gathering will also include the great Michael Martin Murphey (singer/songwriter, replacing Tom Russell, who is ill), Western swing sensations The Hot Club of Cowtown, and Nashville's Brennen Leigh.

There are four shows Friday and four shows Saturday. The venue is small, and I hear great seats are still available.

 For tickets, go to texashillcountrycowboygathering.com.

Veterans Day Proclamation

The day was first celebrated as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918, a date agreed upon by warring nations as an official end to World War I. November 11th became an official national holiday in the United States in 1938.

A US Congressional Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved May 13, 1938, making the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I.

In 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen in the nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans’ service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls.

Veterans Day is different than Memorial Day, a date normally reserved to honor those who have died in service to our nation, and Armed Forces Day, a date we recognize for paying tribute to members of our Armed Forces.

To our veterans, we take a moment to say:

Thank you for your sacrifices, for your service, your valor, for the things you carry, for protecting us, and for defending our rights. Thank you for your courage, strength, and dedication in keeping us safe, and for being willing to defend the liberties that we all enjoy.

Legally, two minutes of silence is recommended to be observed on the 11th day of November each year. In 2021, the US Congress passed a federal law, requiring the President to ask all citizens to spend two minutes honoring American military vets.

Two minutes is a short time, when you consider the time spent on a remote guard post or standing watch on a ship in the middle of an ocean, or the time it takes to take a beach under gunfire, or the time it takes to launch a bomber on a mission, knowing it might not come back.

Please join us in two minutes of silence to honor our military veterans.

The Presidio Democrats are hosting a Big Bend Democrats Fall Forum on Issues and Advocacy this Saturday, November 4, from 2 to 6 pm at the Capri in Marfa, 603 W San Antonio St. The event is headlined by activist Nancy Thompson, Founder of Mothers Against Greg Abbott. Primo Carrasco and Presidio County Commissioner David Beebe will provide the music. A panel discussion, “Democrats on the Border,” will explore diverse perspectives on immigration and border security. A second panel will discuss “Women’s Health in Rural Texas Post-Dobbs.”
