TERLINGUA MOON

Vol. 32, No. 52     December 28, 2021        By Maewestern

County Commissioners Court Meeting Today

A regular meeting of the Brewster County Commissioners Court is scheduled for 9:30am today, Dec. 28, in Alpine. For more information, please visit www.brewstercountytx.com

Tri-County Voter Promoters Meeting Today

Tri-County Voter Promoters is meeting at Cueva de Leon restaurant in Fort Davis at 5pm on Tuesday, December 28th. We will be organizing voter registration efforts throughout the tri-county area (Jeff Davis, Brewster, Presidio counties) during the month of January, prior to the January 31st registration deadline for the 2022 primary elections.

As in the past, we plan to register voters at grocery stores, post offices, food distribution centers, and other locations in Jeff Davis County (Fort Davis, Valentine, Davis Mountains Resort), Brewster County (Alpine, Marathon, Study Butte, Terlingua), and Presidio County (Marfa, Presidio). We need volunteers to help staff voter registration tables at these locations. We are especially short on Spanish speakers.

We will also send postcards to area residents, encouraging them to register to vote (if they are not already registered, or have changed their address since they last voted), and providing them with information on deadlines for registration, ballot by mail applications, early voting, etc. Some postcards will be left at area businesses, to be picked up by customers. We hope to have a QR code on the postcard, which, when held up to a cell phone camera, will take the user to an online voter registration website. We need volunteers for our postcard project, which has been quite successful in the past.

Later in the voter registration process, and subject to Covid restrictions, we plan to do some door-to-door voter registration, at residences which have been identified as likely to have unregistered voters.

The 2022 elections are critically important. They will determine control of the Texas Legislature and the U.S. Congress at a pivotal moment in our country’s history. Most likely, Democrat Beto O’Rourke will face off against Republican Greg Abbott for Governor. Democrat Mike Collier is the frontrunner in the Democratic primary against Republican Lt. Governor Dan Patrick. Attorney General should be a hotly contested race, with Joe Jaworski, Rochelle Garza, et al. in the Democratic primary, and Ken Paxton, George P. Bush, and Louie Gohmert fighting it out in the Republican primary. Democrats John Lira and Priscilla Golden are competing in the Democratic primary to challenge incumbent Republican Tony Gonzales for U.S. Congress District 23.

Everyone needs to vote. And we want to make sure they do.

Note: Jeanine Bishop will try to set up a zoom call for those unable to attend our meeting. If you would like to participate through Zoom, please email me (at remorey@bigbend.net) with your email address, and we will try to provide you with a link to participate in our meeting online via Zoom. If you cannot attend, but want to volunteer to help, please email me back at remorey@bigbend.net, or call me at 432-426-0122, and let me know how you want to contribute to our efforts.
