Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the contagion is accelerating at “an unacceptable rate and it must be corralled” during a media briefing on Monday. Still, he said, “Closing down Texas again will always be the last option.” Abbott, who was one of the first U.S. governors to reopen his state’s economy after the initial wave of Covid-19 lockdowns, cited alarming upticks in positive-testing rates, case counts and hospitalizations. “The positivity rate has gone from about 4.5% in late May to almost 9% today,” Abbott said. State regulators have begun shutting taverns that weren’t enforcing social distancing, the governor said as an example of steps the state is taking to arrest the surge.

On June 22, 2020, Brewster County received confirmation on additional COVID-19 positive cases, bringing the county to a total of 40 cases. The cases range in age from 19-79 years old and most are due to community transmission. The patients are currently isolated. DSHS is supporting Brewster County in identifying any close contacts of the patient so they can be isolated and monitored for symptoms.

The staff at Big Bend Ranch State Park want to remind visitors that summertime temperatures can get well into the triple digits, making hiking and even sight seeing very risky.

From Big Bend National Park and the operator of the lodge and food service in the Park:
Chisos Mountains Lodge will be closed through September 5, 2020.  Our takeout service will be affected as well.  Current plans are to end take-out service on 6/21/20 although this date is subject to change.  We apologize for any inconvenience which this may cause you and your vacation plans.
Our parent company, Forever Resorts has consulted with the National Park Service.  Both entities have come to this mutual agreement.  Brewster County where Big Bend National Park is located has experienced a significant increase in COVID-19 cases which may put a significant strain on regional health care facilities thus causing problems for Park guests and residents if an outbreak occurred in such a remote area.
For those coming to the Park, the Panther Junction Gas Station and Basin Store will be open.  Panther Junction Gas Station will be open from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm; the Basin Store will be open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

There will be an opening on the Terlingua CSD Board of Trustees as of August 1st, 2020. Any interested applicants can pick up an application at the office of TCSD located at 550 Roadrunner Circle.

Sul Ross State University - Alpine’s first act of community service under our new administration has been completed. Over the course of 3 days, 751 COVID-19 tests were administered to local residents - for free. For small communities like ours, I am told that’s a record-breaking turnout.
I wish to thank the Charlie 8 Company of the National Guard, SRSU Vice-President & Dean Leo Dominguez and his entire crew, SRSU Athletic Director Jim Goodman, University Police Chief Dunegan and his team, including 1st Sergeant Omar Madrid & Sergeant Andrea Tucker. Thanks also to the City of Alpine and the Alpine PD, and to our local sheriff, Sheriff Ronny Dodson.
As I worried over the fates of several SRSU employees who were potentially exposed to COVID-19, I decided to reach out for help. Governor Abbott and his team and the Texas Division of Emergency Management were immediately responsive. Within 24 hours of my call, the National Guard team was here to help. That is amazingly fast constituent service!! An extra special thanks to their offices also!
Lastly, thanks to the people of Alpine and our region. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we worked side by side with the National Guard for the first time; thanks for your support and encouragement as we moved through the process. And, thanks for believing in SRSU.
It’s a new day at Sul Ross State. Expect to be seeing and hearing from us a lot as we work to make our communities and our world stronger, safer and healthier.    Pete Gallego

Big Bend Ranch State Park is excited to announce the inclusion of the Chinati Mountains State Natural Area (CMSNA) into their existing International Dark Sky Park designation with the International Dark Sky Association. The addition of CMSNA adds approximately 40,000 acres of rugged and remote Chihuahuan Desert to the existing BBRSP Dark Sky Park designation, bringing the total protected acreage of the Big Bend Ranch State Park Complex to approximately 355,000 acres. CMSNA is located roughly 25 miles north of Presidio, near the international border with Mexico. Together, with neighboring Big Bend National Park, this region of the Big Bend is one of the largest areas of protected night sky in the United States.
